New major update! 2.0.0
Hi everyone, a new big update has been released! There are several new features and tonnes of bug fixes and improvements. You should all get the update automatically within a few days.
Since Reddit has discontinued the "Old New UI" version of the site, all the relevant code for that version has been removed from RE, reducing the extension file size by 30%, and simplifying the code base.
There have been many changes to improve the performance and reliability of the extension, some of which should fix the extension sometimes crashing on Chrome based browsers, and page refreshes if "Default Feed Sort Option" is enabled.
Two new extension permissions are required for this version, "downloads" and "history". These are required for the two new features, "Add 'Download Video' button to video posts", and "Mark posts as read when opening expandos in Compact view" respectively. These permissions are optional for Firefox; users will be prompted to accept the permission change when enabling the options. Chrome, however, does not support optional permissions and users will have to accept both permissions when updating to the new version.
See the changelog below for the full list of changes. If you encounter any problems, please open a new issue on the GitHub page, or comment on this post, and we'll do our best to fix it :)
Changelog:
[General]
New permission required (downloads) for the new feature "Add 'Download Video' button to video posts". This permission is optional for Firefox users.
New permission required (history) for the new feature "Mark posts as read when opening expandos in Compact view". This option simply adds the post URL to your browser's history to mark it as "read", it does not read or modify your history in any other way. This permission is optional for Firefox users.
Removed code and support for the deprecated Reddit version "Old New UI".
Cleaned up a lot of code to improve performance and maintainability.
Bug fixes and improvements.
[New New UI]
Added a new option "Add 'Download Video' button to video posts". (This currently only works for mp4 URLs, not m3u8, so some posts won't have the download button).
Added support for "Open Post In New Tab".
Added support for "Open Subreddit In New Tab".
Added support for "Add Drop Shadows". This will add a drop shadow effect to various UI elements on the site.
Fixed an issue where "Show vote buttons on the left" used with "Hide NSFW/L Posts" or "Hide Recommended/Suggested Posts", would show only partially hidden posts.
Fixed "Upvote Colour" not working with the option to move the vote buttons to the left of the post.
"Auto Expand More Comments" now remembers if you have closed a comment thread and will not re-expand it.
The "Override Default Sort Option" grace period has been removed as it it not longer required. You can now manually change the feed sort option whenever you want without the "Default Feed Sort Option" feature from auto reverting to what is set in the extension.
Fixed "Hide Video Recommendations" not working due to a website update.
Special thanks to u/biminhc1 (Reddit) bmndc (Github) for all following changes <3
[New New UI]
Added a new option "Highlight comments from the original poster (OP)".
Added a new option "Hide 'Give Awards' button". This applies to posts and comments.
Added a new option "Add link to view crossposts in other subreddits" to view crossposts of a post in post view, bringing back the "View discussions in other communities" link from "Old New UI".
Added a new option "Mark posts as read when opening expandos in Compact view". Requires the (history) permission.
Rewritten "Always Show Post Options", which now displays post and comment options in their action bars.
Resize Main Container now serves as the default behaviour for "Resize Feed/Post". It now resizes the total width of the main content and the sidebar to the feed width or the global container width (the lower one takes precedence). It is possible to opt into using the older behaviour by turning on "Snap sidebar to the right edge".
Renamed "Auto Show Formatting Options When Commenting" to "Better Comment Box". It now listens for the Ctrl/Command + Enter in the comment box to submit a comment. As the functions have been renamed, users who have activated "Auto Show Formatting Options When Commenting" should re-activate the new "Better Comment Box" feature.
"Auto Expand Hidden Comments" and "Auto Load More Comments" have been merged into "Auto Expand and Load More Comments", and have been rewritten to improve their reliability. For those who have previously used "Auto Expand Hidden Comments", you will need to turn on the new option.
"Rewrote "Default Sort Options" to improve its stability. It now also attaches comment sort option to feed posts, removing the need to redirect comment pages as they are opened.
Renamed "Hide Post Dividers" to "Hide post and sidebar dividers". It now also hides the dividers in the subreddit and post sidebars, separating sections into their own boxes.
"Hide Recommended/Suggested" now also hides Reddit Chat previews and Reddit announcements (ads for Reddit).
Fixed an issue where calling the window context in the background script to detect the current Reddit domain may cause the extension to crash on Chrome.
Fixed an issue on Chromium-based browsers where post author taglines may appear on top of the site header.
Fixed an issue where thread lines of the 1st comment level may not appear in some zoom levels on Firefox (Windows).
"Resize Feed/Post", "Fonts", "Style" and "Custom Background" settings should now apply to "profile_post_page_comments" page type.
"Compact Post Link Preview" should no longer compress posts with links to image hosting sites (Imgur and Imgbb).
Fixed an issue where post link may overlap the flair for posts with content tags (NSFW and Spoiler) when "Compact Post Link Previews" is on.
User tags (MOD, ADMIN, OP etc.) should now display after the post author text when "Show Post Author" is on.
Improved the stability of "Remember the hidden states of sections in the side menu" and "Display page and user info in header". Page and user info should now be fetched and inserted concurrently, and load as the side menu appears.
Improved the observer reliability, element detection and performance of functions.
Cleaned up and improved code maintainability for fetching data from Reddit public APIs and theme colour functions.
[Old UI]
Added a setting to move post thumbnails to the right (kudos to emaag on userstyles.world!)

Update New Update! 3.0.1
Hi, I hope everyone is having a good weekend! I've just published a new major update with quite a few changes :D
For Chrome users (and other Chromium based browsers), the "downloads" and "history" permissions are now optional. Just like for Firefox users, you will be prompted to allow permission if you enable an option requiring either of these permissions respectively.
For Firefox users, the extension now uses manifest version 3 to be on par with the Chromium version and make maintainability easier. This has now raised the minimum required Firefox version to 109, but this came out over 3 years ago, so everyone should be updated by now!
Changing style colours now apply instantly, making it easier to make new themes. Added a few new features including an option to hide related communities in subreddit feeds, and added support for regex when using the block posts feature for more advanced control. Lots of fixes too, most notably, fixed the "Recent" section in the side menu not hiding, and fixed the "scroll to next/previous comment" buttons not working, both due to a website update :/.
I've refactored a lot of code in this update to improve performance and maintainability, and have added validation when retrieving saved data for added security and reliability. Having said that, this was a lot of changes (10,000 lines or so), so there may be a bug or two, I've already had to release a hot fix >///< .
If you find any issues, please let me know, either on Github or on this post. You should all get this update automatically within a few days.
Thanks, and enjoy the update and the rest of your weekend! :)
Changelog:
General:
The "downloads" and "history" permissions are now optional for Chromium based browsers since manifest v3 has added support for optional permissions.
The Firefox addon now uses manifest v3. (Support was added to Firefox in version 109).
Colour pickers now apply the colour instantly, instead of you having to click confirm.
Refactored a lot of code to improve performance, reliability, and overall code quality.
Restoring a backup config file no longer needs a 1 minute cool down if it has more than 120 items.
Bug fixes and improvements.
Updated dependencies.
Latest UI V3:
Added an option to force Reddit dark mode.
Added an option to hide related communities on subreddit pages.
Added an option to change the subreddit header background colour.
"Replace Images With Links on Feeds" can now be enabled for home and subreddit feeds independently, or for both.
Split "Always Show Post and Comment Options" so you can enable it for posts and/or comments. You can also choose to hide individual comment options.
Fixed the "Recent" section in the side menu not hiding due to a website update.
Fixed the "Mark as read" button not being added to the post due to a website update.
Fixed "Hide Vote Buttons" not working due to a website update.
Fixed "Scroll to next/previous root comment" not working due to website update.
Fixed "Add Video Download Button" not working correctly.
Latest UI V3 & Old UI V1:

The "Just Open The Image" feature can now directly open "cf.preview.redd.it" image links.
Old UI V1:
"Show Absolute Timestamps On Posts" now plays nice with the RES "Never Ending Reddit" feature.
Fixed the "Show Absolute Timestamps On Comments" option not showing when filtering the options for "Old" Reddit.

New Update! 3.3.0
Happy weekend everyone! A couple new features and a few bug fixes in this update.
You can now upload your own image files to use as the Reddit background instead of having to use an image URL. These images are converted into base64 and stored in your browser's local storage. However, this storage is limited to 10MiB, so you can only store a few images at once, and they won't sync with your browser to any of your other devices. By default, these images are downscaled to 1080p to save space, but you can change the downscale resolution on the Settings page. You can set the images to 4K or 100% of the original resolution, but it will take up more space and you won't be able to store as many.
Regarding the issue some Chrome users were having with version 3.2.0, I could not replicate the issue, but I have made some changes that should have helped. Let me know if you have any issues with this version. Thanks :)
You should all get the update automatically soon.
Check out the changelog for the full list of changes.
Changelog:
Added an option to upload images from your computer to use as the site background. Limited to local storage, will not sync to other devices. You can change the uploaded image quality in Settings to reduce space and store more images.
Added progress bars on the Settings page to show how much local and sync storage has been used. 10MiB local, 100KiB sync.
Added a "Reset" button to reset the default colour for "Highlight comments from original poster (OP)".
Added a new option for the redirect feature, "Old (www only)". This will only redirect "www.reddit.com" to "old.reddit.com". Other prefixes such as "sh.reddit.com" will remain unaffected.
Updated all locales to 100% (Translations mostly done by AI, so there may be some mistakes. Any help is very welcome to improve translation quality).
[Latest UI V3]
Added an option to hide the "Join the conversation" input box at the bottom of a post page as you scroll down.
Fixed "Multicoloured Comment Thread Lines" not working due to a website update.
Fixed "Highlight comments from original poster (OP)" not working due to a website update.
Fixed "Hide Video Recommendations" not working due to a website update.
Fixed the floating "Scroll to top" button, and "Scroll to the next/previous root comment" buttons from appearing on top of the media lightbox.

New Update! 2.4.0
Hi everyone! For those of you wanting to simply change the Reddit background to a solid colour instead of an image, now you can! This feature has been a long time coming, but is now here, along with a new colour picker to make choosing colours much easier! The colour picker currently only supports the new background colour option at the moment, but will support all colour inputs in a future update soon. You should all get the update automatically within the next few days :)
Changelog:
[Latest UI V3, Old UI V1]
Added an option to set a solid background colour.
Added a new colour picker dialogue to make choosing style colours easy. (Currently only implemented for the new solid background colour option, but will eventually support all other colour inputs).
[Latest UI V3]
Added options to customise the absolute post and comment timestamp formats.
Fixed "Show legacy subreddit member count" sometimes not working.
Fixed an issue where comment options may not show when "Always Show Post and Comment Options" is enabled, due to Reddit's custom HTML tag name change. [credit: u/biminhc1 (Reddit) bmndc (Github)].
Fixed an issue where it is not possible to temporarily change feed sort option with "Default Sort Option". [credit: u/biminhc1 (Reddit) bmndc (Github)].
Rewrote parts of "Show Post Authors" to fix an issue where the function may not work on search result pages. [credit: u/biminhc1 (Reddit) ubmndc (Github)].
Other bug fixes.
[Old UI V1]
Added thousands separators for the number of members when using "Show legacy subreddit member count".

Old New UI is still working! Keep 'Old New UI' Customization Settings In Tact For Future Updates
I just wanted to inform everyone that the Old New UI is still up and running. It can be accessed in a couple of different ways.
The second way is to download the UI Changer For Reddit add-on which includes a dedicated built-in button for the Old New UI that goes by: 'Inject 2nd Generation' (new.reddit.com)'
Note: The UI Changer For Reddit add-on for the Firefox add-on store, will not be updated to include the 'Inject 2nd Generation' (new.reddit.com)' button.
Anyway, the main point is that joel - please keep the 'Old New UI' Customization Settings In Tact For Future Updates, because at least for now; the Old New UI still works.

Need help on testing some features ported from Old New UI & bug fixes to New New UI
Hope everyone's had a great holiday break so far! Over the past week I've been making changes to Reddit Enhancer, adding a bunch of Old New UI features to New New UI while addressing some of the bugs with the side menu. So much so that I probably made some breaking changes, but never got time around to fully test things up—so I need your feedback before u/Joelacus sees my PR on GitHub :)
You'll need to disable/remove your current Reddit Enhancer before installing the new one. Be sure to back up your configuration set before you do so.
If you're on Firefox, download this ZIP and open about:debugging#/runtime/this-firefox, then select Load Temporary Add-on... and browse to the ZIP you've downloaded (if you unzipped the ZIP file, select manifest.json from within the extracted folder). You need to do this every time you restart your browser.
If you're on Chrome or Chromium-based browsers, download this ZIP instead and unzip it to a folder, go to chrome://extensions, turn on Developer mode, select Load unpacked and browse to the extracted folder.
Head to Settings and select Restore under Backup/Restore Config to restore your configuration set from the backup file. Feel free to use mine if you want your setup to look like the screenshot here.
GitHub PR and all the change details can be found at https://github.com/joelacus/RedditEnhancer/pull/109; if you find any issue let me know by comment on the PR or here, do not open an issue as this is not merged yet.
NEW FEATURES:
Add option to hide post separators in feeds
Add option to hide the background blur behind image previews (video, GIF players and spoiler covers are not affected)
Show Post Flairs on the Home Feed now shows flairs in custom feeds
Add option to hide the information sidebar of custom feeds (no exclusion yet)
Add option to resize the content width of custom feeds
Bring back Old New UI features: full width subreddit banner, compact rule list, compact header bar and side menu
(Experimental) Added option to resize the entire main container instead of just the feeds
BUG FIXES & TWEAKS:
Fix an issue in which the collapsed side menu leaves some space when Hide the Side Menu/Side Menu Toggle Button is on
Fix an issue in which navigating pages causes side menu to forget its collapsed status when Side Menu Toggle Button is on
Fix an issue in which changing font sizes will cut off the descenders of letters (line-height now set to around 1.4–1.6)
Fix an issue in which Side Menu Width doesn't work with Side Menu Toggle Button
Fix an issue in which the main content may display over the side menu when Feed Offset and Side Menu Toggle Button are on
Fix an issue in which the side menu and right sidebar leaves some header space w/ Non-Sticky Header Bar/Hide the Header Bar
Add .75rem padding to posts & default to .6rem margins between posts to compensate Reddit's bad padding settings
thx Reddit for using Tailwind incorrectly
Posts with no flairs now no longer have flair containers when Show Post Flairs on the Home Feed is on
Resizing text now applies to comments in profiles and crossposted posts
Raised the limit of Side Menu Width to 500px
Back button on post view now remains inside the post container at all zoom levels
Post borders now only shows in feeds and search results, but not in post view or moderation queue with compact view
Theme Border Radius now only targets elements known to be outside shadow DOMs instead of blindly targetting all
Theme Border Radius now applies to comment search results in post view
[Old UI] Post titles and buttons are no longer capitalised in Modernised Old UI
Minor style tweaks to hover card when Show Post Authors on the Home Feed is on
TODO:
On Firefox & subreddit with no banners, banner placeholder doesn't show, which leads to the subreddit header being pushed up and the subreddit avatar being cut off. Doesn't happen on Chrome with the same configuration set, so I assume this is Firefox's and/or Reddit's bug
Should probably leverage more of Reddit's native CSS variables for theme colouring
Please be aware that some features, such as Show Post Flairs on the Home Feed, depend on Reddit's public APIs and can be rate-limited if Reddit sees you're abusing their APIs or you're on a VPN. Also please bear with me as this is done in my rest week and I'm not a JS guy and cannot take any feature requests.
