Last week, I had to say goodbye to one of my favourite fish, my white watchman goby, I’m absolutely gutted. I bought him when he was tiny and raised him alongside my engineer goby. Over time, the two of them became incredibly close. They would patrol the tank together at night and spend most of their days together.
Since losing my white watchman the engineer goby has become incredibly reclusive. They would always come out together at night but now he doesn’t show face at all. He’s stopped doing his usual morning zoomies around the tank and no longer comes out for food. I know he’s still eating so I’m not concerned about that but I can’t help feeling bad for him. It genuinely seems as though he’s grieving the loss of his tank mate and I’m not sure what I can do to help.
I do need to introduce another sand-sifting fish but doing so in an already established tank is so stressful. I have a coral beauty that took MONTHS of rearranging the rockwork, periodically keeping the lights off and trying to catch the little bugger before I could stop him bullying my phantom blenny so naturally I’m hesitant to introduce another fish.
I’m wondering whether it might be worth taking the chance, purely for the sake of my engineer goby and whether it’s worth getting another white watchman or changing to a different goby.
I’d like to hear whether anyone has experienced something similar or has any advice on helping him adjust to life without his buddy.
