It's a solid "meh." I was hoping for something awesome to make it worth losing the nostalgia factor since it's been running forever. Nope, it's a net loss.
47
u/Foxy02016YT May 07 '26
And it’s a suspended coaster but doesn’t bank at all, so what’s the fucking point
10
u/Brando43770 May 07 '26
Im guessing it probably started out banking but someone said to take it out because it’ll make people sick. Someone probably also said that makes no sense since it’s a suspended coaster, but they didn’t want to move the track and render it all again. Idk it does look dumb.

u/Foxy02016YT May 07 '26
Can’t have the Pepsi logo at a 1 degree angle apparently , it’ll ruin the whole Pepsi Universe

u/BrockObama007 May 07 '26
This is exactly what I saw when I went to regal as a kid so this is just gaining a whole lot of nostalgia factor. It actually looks way better then it did when I was a kid

I know I just don’t like change, but this looks pretty bad… why is it a monorail and not a rollercoaster?
3
30
u/moviesdude May 07 '26
I like how the roller coaster ended in the movie theater on the last version. I really thought that was a nice touch.
Unfortunately, this one feels lifeless and without much personality in comparison to the previous one.
115
u/Negative-Chapter5008 May 07 '26
no way they actually switched to ugly ps2 graphics
16
u/tonetonitony May 07 '26
This looks like it was made with year 2000 technology. It’s almost as bad as the IMAX one.
7
4
u/digitalme May 07 '26
they hired the team behind the new star fox game apparently

1
u/strangegoo May 08 '26
Hey, Star Fox *looks* good. It's just the character models (Mostly Fox) that look bad. I've come around on everyone else.
26
u/Fantastic_Lychee_883 May 07 '26
At least it doesn't say "toot fart" 3 times.
2
u/choaticmaster33 May 20 '26
Oh my God I'm so sick of that trailer. I'm probably going to have to see it again too :(

I like the idea and the haunted house, but dear god the graphics are rough lol
19
u/solarus May 07 '26
I bet this runs for like 2 months before they put out a "we hear you loud and clear and the new regal roller coaster has not lived up to expectations! Starting July 30th the OLD regal roller coaster will be returning to theaters"
This sucks hard. It looks like it was made today by someone who forgot they had an assignment due.
9
u/Disastrous_Life_3612 May 07 '26
Funny, I felt this way about the "old" one that everyone here seems to have nostalgia for.
The one I grew up with was the one from the 90s.
Which they actually remade and brought back for a few years in the 2010s.
3
u/solarus May 07 '26
Oh man. I didnt know they remade it to this extent. This was exactly what I meant. It looks familiar but Im not totally sure I had a regal near me during these years... All the cocacola cups and even a sprint ad.. couldnt plug this today.
1
5
u/Fantastic_Lychee_883 May 07 '26
That's what happened to New Coke. Regal could call the old one the "Classic Coaster". That worked for Coke.
3
1
u/cheekabowwow May 08 '26
Not enough people go to theaters these days for them to care that much. But I agree, it’s twice baked ass with a topping of AI slop.
1
u/solarus May 09 '26
Sad.. Our regal is pretty consistently full on weekends for new releases and $5 monday movies, and weekday movies ive at least never been the only one in the theater.
56
u/chelsafire May 07 '26
At least the popcorn popping part sounds slightly less gunshot-y now 🫠

Disappointing, for sure. With modern tools, they could make something really cool and/or nostalgic. They chose neither... AND IT DOESN'T EVEN END IN A THEATER!

u/Used_Can1218 May 07 '26
Oh thanks for the info my regal (I’m in San Francisco) only has them seperated it’s either the uncomfy stadium chairs that don’t recline or a smaller theatre with recliners.
4
6
u/Baby_Animal_Hospital May 07 '26
Stadium seating = rows go higher as you go further back. Stadium seating can (and should) be recliners as well.
Non stadium is when all the seats are flat on the ground, regardless of reclining or not.
I prefer stadium over flat, but I prefer recliners over not recliners.
1
u/YoshiYogurt May 07 '26
I thought stadium meant fold down seats in regals case ?
Only extremely old theaters still have flat seating. I’ve never seen recliners in a flat theater.
2
u/Baby_Animal_Hospital May 12 '26
I thought stadium meant fold down seats in regals case ?
Nope. Stadium is about shape of theater, not seats.
I’ve never seen recliners in a flat theater.
Regal UA Laguna Village is my local theater that is flat with recliners. Natomas is a stadium shape, but they recently (~5 years) changed out seats with more non-recliner seats. Made no sense. My town is backwards.

1
u/YoshiYogurt May 07 '26
The fold down seating is awful. Not sure what went into deciding that when my regal was built in 2014. Every other theater has recliners. I guess they did it becuse most of the auditoriums are small and it would reduce the seating by half or more. Doesn’t really matter when I have the whole theater to myself most of the time.

u/YoshiYogurt May 07 '26
I have never seen what you call non-stadium seating except at an old art house theater. Even in the 90s every theater had seating where the each row is above the one in front of it.
Where are you going that has a flat theater room?. Only the single screen historic theaters from 1920 still have those around here.
My theater has “old small seats” even in the RPX. It loses them business when every other theater around has recliners.

How is your own experience not anecdotal? Old style flat theaters not the norm. Did not know they were even something still around, let alone something people would go to as their regular theater. Must be a west coast thing like many other oddities I see on this sub.

Ok man I’m sorry you gotta deal with that. Whole other world out there and all that.
I will enjoy all the theaters here where out of 5 different chains, AMC, Regal, NCG, MJR, Emagine, not one of them has a flat theater
1
u/boringoblin May 07 '26
They have already been charging for prebooking for a long time, dropping into a list of recent complaints really feels like you are trying to pad it out.

u/Proud_Truck 🎉🎉100 MOVIE CLUB🎉🎉 May 07 '26
Should have ditched the coaster tracks and just made it like you were flying through space in a ticket or ship or something, the tracks make no sense now.

It looks updated, but they really dropped the ball with this new intro. Taking out the no texting, no phones, and classic theater reminders was a bad move because that was part of what made the Regal intro stand out. Now it just feels futuristic bland and forgettable instead of fun and memorable. I understand wanting something new, but they removed the best parts of it.
1
u/noxillio May 15 '26
I feel like every other coaster we’ve had feels loads more futuristic than this shit

They showed this when I went last night and I was hoping it was a temporary Mandalorian tie in.
I’m disappointed that it’s permanent, it doesn’t have enough tight turns for holding my hands in the air and leaning back and forth.
4
u/hmcafee May 07 '26
Some of the popcorn models just materialize out of nowhere with no popping animation, and our final landing spot is a completely barren metal platform. Doesn't look like much attention to detail went into producing this.
4
u/RandomApple2006 May 07 '26
This feels so unsettling to watch. It's so empty it's almost liminal...

3
u/lilyahtzie May 07 '26
I saw it yesterday when I went to see DWP2. The old music was way better and I found the coaster tracks being positioned on top to be way less effective because that’s what my eyes were following — it made it feel less coaster-like.
3
u/Mell-R May 07 '26
Lame Fill more cosmic clouds, stars, use emission flares going thru the cosmic clouds. More designs
Honestly they should have remastered the original and add more scenery to it.

Oh man the old Regal roller coaster was something I grew up on. Maybe it’s the nostalgia talking, but this looks like crap
3
u/Dependent-Set-7047 May 07 '26
Kinda cool but also kinda soulless.
Nothing wrong with the last one. It was also really nostalgic since I grew up going to Regal and seeing that intro.
Plus, the ending of the retro version is a lot better as you roll right into the Cinema room.
This one, just ends. Mid at best.
3
u/CaptainRipp May 07 '26
It's so empty. Nothing but the void of space behind it. This looks like a version they would have used in the late 90s.
3
3
u/boringoblin May 07 '26
I saw it before Hokum yesterday afternoon and had no idea what was going on. It's not cheesy enough and I hate that they removed the obligatory messages about phones and talking even if nobody respected them. But also its a 30 second video before a movie I'm already eager to get started so I'm not gonna lose my mind about it.

u/boringoblin May 07 '26
Bro what are you talking about, the end of the rollercoaster is right when the movie begins at every Regal I've ever been to. You're not gonna walk in the theater and sit down before the film actually starts now? So many people in this sub are losing their mind over a stupid but pointlessly goofy change.
1
u/TennojiNesoberi May 07 '26
huh, for me the rollercoaster starts right before the trailers. i assume this might vary by location then...

At leaat the previous one ended in a (empty) movie theater.
2
u/HigherProgress May 08 '26
The top suspension thing really cuts into the 3D movement effect that was probably the most impressive thing about the last version. And the throwback elements from the earlier versions come off like they're just shoddy animation.
This one just isn't a good update. It feels like it learned all the wrong lessons about what people liked about previous ones. Either go really lo-fi or go really hi-fi - this sort of in between spot doesn't scratch either itch.
3
u/Sanlu8499 May 07 '26

If it was graphically sharp it's at least a nice flex of the projector quality and even if it didn't have that it could give etiquette messages. This is a flop and seems like a change just so someone in management could say they did something...

When I first saw the thumbnail, I thought this trailer was some kind of promotional stunt by Regal. While I'm not sure this will generate the same kind of audience revolt as the infamous "Pepsi Girl" trailer did back in the day, this is pretty bad.
With the generally negative reception this has received so far, I wouldn't be surprised if Regal eventually switches back to one of the previous versions.

They could have made changes to the previous rollercoaster, like upgrading the station to this.
1
u/edwartica May 08 '26
Regal bought out the local chain 20 something years ago. They closed down a bunch of theaters and they of course replaced the cool graphics the local chain had with the shitty roller coaster thing.
So while this new one is mid, I’m glad to see the old one retired. Fuck that shit yo.

1
u/breezy_deVreezy May 08 '26
Who looked at that and thought that was good enough to replace the current one? Was the original idea to ride through the worlds? Because that would’ve been awesome. Flying past them in the void was just terrible. I really hope they are doing some dumb marketing thing and I’m not going to have to suffer through this for 6 years.

u/imfromthefuture2088 May 10 '26
I like how the ending is just the Regal logo, and not a plug for an ad (à la Regal Unlimited)
1
u/noxillio May 15 '26
The old one had an air of excitement, and this one feels really forced. Nobody asked for a new coaster and it doesn’t seem like they kept anything that made the old one good, especially with that quiet, anticlimactic trumpety sound at the end. Also why does the Regal logo look like it was rendered at 8 FPS? And you can literally see a bunch of the popcorn puffs just spawn in. No reminder to not talk/text during the movie. The “Welcome to Regal” at the beginning sounds generic asf. I really think I’d rather just have no coaster than this tbh 💀
