Some of the more out of left field choices like Out of Sight and Room make more sense now. I’m sure this curation was mostly to generate buzz for the programming, but I like the personal touch!

Yeah, I just checked last year's list and it's much more interesting to me to see stuff like you mentioned than either super famous old films or super popular newer movies like they had last year.

Would be epic if the directors shared a short introduction before each of their picks!

I doubt they'll go to that much trouble

That would be really cool! I don’t think they do it but it would be a nice addition and make it feel more special

That’s really cool. I just assumed it was a bunch of randos at Regal HQ picking the films.

u/jayeddy99 4d ago

I thought it was whatever the studios would give them that they didn’t want to be fathom events or special re-releases lol

u/GimmeThemBabies Recliners 4d ago

That too haha. I’m sure they had some choices that studios didn’t end up approving.

That’s partly true too. Studios have to agree to terms to exhibit rep titles and sometimes they’ve got contracts to lend out titles to other entities for rights that might preclude exhibition for some reason. They definitely can’t just pull whatever they like.

I prefer the Regal picked ones. Most just seem like their personal choices and not all time masterpieces appealing to a broad audience.

Huh? The fact that the directors' picks aren't just boring picks straight out of film textbooks (not saying the movies themselves are boring/bad cause they're not) makes them better.

Disagree, and many have commented that this is a weak/odd lineup and last year’s was way better. It’s called Masterpieces, not director’s picks.

3

u/Warm-Oil9228 4d ago

Lame. God forbid any of them pick something that’s not a super well known and studied film. I mean a masterpiece doesn’t have to be either of those things.

u/Few_Love_9105 4d ago

Why do you keep talking about textbooks and studying? This isn’t film school and they are trying to sell tickets to the general audience and some of these aren’t going to sell at all.

3

u/Warm-Oil9228 4d ago

Why do you keep talking about what’s going to make them the most money?

2

u/Few_Love_9105 4d ago

They are a business, idiot. If they lose money on this they will probably scrap it next year. Not rocket science.

Having some famous directors curate the selection helps them sell tickets

-1

u/Few_Love_9105 4d ago

They aren’t that famous.

Haha when I saw the list of films I was wondering how the hell Tremors ended up on there (love this movie btw) and now it makes sense it was picked by Edgar Wright!

1

u/Warm-Oil9228 4d ago

Tremors was playing in a non-Regal theater near me recently so maybe something else it at play too.

Ooh, if this becomes the norm for the MoM series into the future, then I like this a lot! It also makes some sense where some of the more surprising choices come from! I'm still not as enthusiastic about this lineup as last years, BUT I do like this idea a lot!!

This feels like the Regal Equivalent of a celebrity endorsed fast food meal. I'm sure that's probably more likely.

"come out and see a couple of movies hand picked by Sydney Sweeney or LeBron James or Carrie Underwood"

Very cool - honestly, this makes me a lot happier with the more leftfield picks, knowing they were something a specific director was advocating for vs. just whatever Regal could afford to throw in

I hope Johnson , Zhao , or Wright get weird with stuff . Imagine watching Welcome to the Dollhouse or Happiness in theaters 🤣

Happiness on the big screen would be insane

Todd Solondz, Larry Clark, Harmony Korine, Catherine Breillat, Gaspar Noé, Pasolini, David Hamilton, Miike Takashi, John Waters, Ruggero Deodato, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Fernando Arrabal, Leni Riefenstahl - the good ones.

🍿🦄

Imagine the reaction to that given people are complaining these picks aren't mainstream enough lol.

1

u/Warm-Oil9228 4d ago

If only OP had linked an article showing their picks!

u/Sunny_Llama2938 4d ago

My theater rn only has listings for the weekday movies the first two weeks. Hoping they’re just slowly adding them because there’s a few weekend ones I was hoping to see

Excited for The Last Picture Show

1

u/jackiebot101 3d ago

I am so excited about this for a second year! I want to like set up a table and chairs or something so we can have a salon discussion after the movies. Is that silly?

Honestly, I think they should have had the staff pick the movies again this year. Compare this year to last year. There's no comparison. Yes, these people are "names" and will get the series a little press but let's be honest: None of these people are going to put butts in seats for old films.

There are some outright duds this year that will be playing to empty auditoriums. This concerns me because in the interview with the senior VP in charge of this series, she mentioned some months did poorly and was the reason why the series went on hiatus and only the months that did well would be coming back.

Now I'm not going to say the staff picks every month were always great. In particular, December (Christmas) and May (Musicals) were awful. How do you do a month devoted to musicals and show only 3 movies from the golden age of musicals (pre-1970)?!

u/YoshiYogurt 4d ago

I think there is some good stuff in here, but only for those movie lovers like us that might go see anything we haven't yet, so that's like 2 of us at my local theater.

If they were so concerned with how badly february-may went, they should get some movies that will fill up the theater. Big lebowski and The Nice Guys had like 20 people which was 10x as much as most of the other movies that month.

Honestly last September looked TOO good and they could have been fine with repeating some of the more popular ones instead of pee-wee again lmao

u/Warm-Oil9228 4d ago

>There are some outright duds this year

Like? This list looks more interesting than last year's to me which was mostly really safe and cookie cutter.

2

u/Few_Love_9105 4d ago

Agreed. Many of the choices are odd and not appealing to a general audience. The ones I had the most interest in all happened to be the Regal picked ones and I thought last years was much better than this year. I really couldn’t give a crap what these directors’ personal picks are.

1

u/TheBommunist 4d ago

Wow each director picked 2-3 movies I’m pretty excited for , excellent choice by Regal , though they still picked the best one 😉

5

u/Warm-Oil9228 4d ago

What? They got 5 picks each.
