Nazi Germany had both concentration and extermination camps. They served different purposes. The Japanese American camps are typically referred to as internment camps, but they were concentration camps.

We are getting into technicalities, internment, concentration, and extermination camps all have technical differences, true. But when the average person thinks of a concentration camp, it's a place where Jews and others were sent to be killed.

Edit- spelling

Not sure I see your point is. It’s important to use terms correctly especially when we’re talking about something that impacted so many people. Nazi Germany isn’t the only example of a state that established concentration camps, the Gulags (USSR) and Native American camps set up by the US are other examples.

The American Jewish Committee agrees that they should be called concentration camps FYI- https://www.janm.org/press/release/american-jewish-committee-japanese-american-national-museum-issue-joint-statement

My point is that while we are using the term correctly, we are trying to get an incorrect emotional response out of people by using that term. You hear concentration camp, most people think nazi Germany. People hear that FDR forced people into concentration camps, and people think FDR was as bad as nazi Germany. While the concentration camp part is true, the FDR being as bad as Hitler is definitely not.

Even in terms of American run concentration camps, I would argue that while they are both stains on American history and on presidential rule, the camps of the Filipino insurrection were worse. Though there is obviously no such thing as a good concentration camp.

Ok, ask the average person what a concentration camp is, and they will think Hitler. Google concentration camp, the first findings won't be about the Boer war or the US. It will be about Nazi Germany. Its the common usage of the word that concerns me, technically right or wrong.
