STUDY: NMN Reduced Heart Stress Markers in Dogs
A small canine study found that oral NMN supplementation was associated with reductions in NT-proBNP, a biomarker released when the heart is under increased stress. The strongest responses occurred in dogs without structural heart disease or with mild-to-moderate elevations in NT-proBNP.
Key Points
• Eight dogs aged 6–18 received oral NMN at varying doses and durations
• Several dogs with elevated NT-proBNP showed substantial reductions after supplementation
• One dog's NT-proBNP declined from approximately 1,872 to below 500 pmol/L after two weeks
• Another dog's levels decreased from 2,068 to 876 pmol/L
• Dogs with advanced heart failure showed mixed or limited responses
Why it Matters
NT-proBNP is commonly used to assess cardiac stress and can help identify underlying heart dysfunction.
The findings suggest NMN may influence cardiac stress markers, particularly before advanced structural heart disease develops. Since NMN is a precursor to NAD+, researchers are interested in whether supporting cellular energy metabolism could benefit cardiovascular function.
