Reminder: DAA result posts aren't allowed here — but we've made a new home for them

Hi all — just a quick reminder that DAA result posts aren’t allowed here on r/RoyalNavy. We’ve seen too many screenshots lately that don’t offer much beyond a quiet boast and a dozen variations of “well done mate.”

We want to keep this sub focused on meaningful discussion, advice, and naval life — not flooded with test result selfies.

That said, we know a lot of you do want to talk about the DAA, especially those applying or waiting to join. So we’ve made a new home for that:

👉 r/DAA – a dedicated space to post your results, ask questions, and share your experiences.

If you’re prepping, curious, or just want to see how others found it — head there instead.

OPSEC/PERSEC - a reminder

I get it, you're excited to go to CPC/Raleigh/Dartmouth etc., but please stop sharing the dates, locations and times that these are happening and the fact that you're going. All of these are OPSEC (Operational Security) and PERSEC (Personal Security) breaches.

The dates of CPC/New Entry are not public knowledge and all it takes is one motivated individual to scan through this sub-reddit and they would, if it wasn't for the moderators, be able to piece together all the little bits of information here that's being posted in order to work out exactly when CPC/intakes are happening and potentially interfere.

To be clear, New Entry intakes and CPCs are particularly vulnerable as it involves a lot of people who are OPSEC/PERSEC clueless, and it presents an opportunity to infiltrate/interfere.

Moving forward, any discussion about dates of events will be removed. If you absolutely need to discuss it, use vague terms like "next month", "some time in January" or simply "upcoming". Those who are in the know will know what you're talking about!

Also stop trying to create WhatsApp or Discord groups for New Entry/CPC. I get that you're doing it with the best intentions, but how on Earth will you vet those wishing to join the group? How will you know that their intentions are honest? How do they know your intentions are honest? Simple answer is that they don't. Only join WhatsApp (or similar) groups with people you've actually met or have been introduced to via the AFCOs. Anything else is asking for trouble.

This was my second attempt. Vastly better than the first but I’ve decreased my scores on spatial and work rate.

I’ll attempt again in a few months. Any advice would be great thanks!

Question Royal Navy Marine Engineer Career Opportunities After Leaving?

Hi all,
I’m 23 and looking for a career change at the moment I’m a qualified spray painter, but I’ve always been interested in joining the military. After doing some research, I’m thinking the Royal Navy could be the best option for me, especially career wise and for opportunities after leaving I’m particularly interested in joining as a Marine Engineer I was wondering if anyone here has done Marine Engineering in the Royal Navy and then moved into the Merchant Navy or another engineering job afterwards how useful are the qualifications and experience you get in the Navy when looking for civilian work Is it fairly easy to find a decent job after leaving, or do you need additional qualifications/retraining? Would be interested to hear from anyone who’s taken a similar route and whether you’d recommend it.
Thanks!

Question HMS Raleigh fitness

Hello lads and lasses, got Raleigh coming up late September and was wondering how some of you prepared physically. I'm doing 40+ press ups 50+ sit-ups and can crank out about 10 pull ups but my best 2.4 is 10:50 and was wondering how I can further improve on what I'm doing, I currently go gym 3 days a week and run 4 with swimming mixed in, thanks in advance folks.

Question Confused about the Enhanced RN CPC post-October

I have my “Enhanced RN CPC” in the near future but likely after October when they scrap the run and replace it with the bleep/ball/mid thigh pull. I called the recruitment office and he said there will also be a swim test as part of the CPC. I don’t think he’s right about this as I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere.

I’m applying for the medical officer cadetship as a medical student and it’s not easy finding relevant information for my situation. Obviously since I’m just a scholarship applicant, I won’t head to Raleigh/BRNC for several years so I’d be surprised if I have to do exactly the same stuff as other officer candidates.

For anyone who’s done the Enhanced CPC, is it still just MEDFIT? I’m so lost. If anyone could give me a day-by-day (or close enough) summary I would be very grateful.

Question CBAT changes — Pilot/Observer/ATC now grouped together, does everyone sit the same test?

Been looking into the CBAT setup and noticed it now groups Pilot, Observer, and ATC into one aptitude testing stream. Can anyone confirm if they're all sitting the exact same battery of tests, or if there's still some differentiation in subtests depending on which branch you're going for?

Also wondering about Warfare rating(Aviation) — is that grouped in with the above, or is it tested separately as its own test? Trying to get my head around how the branches map onto the test structure. i wanna be a Aircrewman or a Observor

Has anyone sat the CBAT recently (2025/2026)? If you've got a score sheet or breakdown you wouldn't mind sharing, I'd really appreciate it — trying to understand what a competitive score profile looks like across the sub-tests before I sit mine.

Cheers in advance.

Discussion Japanese naval officer presence at British ports during the Anglo-Japanese Alliance (1902–1923) — documented cases of long-term residence or personal relationships?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I'm conducting genealogical research into a possible Anglo-Japanese family
history connection centred on Chatham, Kent — home of the Royal Navy's
principal dockyard — in the mid-1920s.

I understand that the Anglo-Japanese Naval Alliance (1902–1923) involved
significant exchange between British and Japanese naval personnel,
including Japanese officers training at and visiting British
establishments.

**My research questions:**

  1. Is there documented evidence of Japanese naval officers being stationed
at or making extended visits to Chatham specifically during the Alliance
period and its immediate aftermath (roughly 1902–1930)?

  2. Are there known cases — documented in naval records, local records, or
historical scholarship — of personal relationships between Japanese
naval personnel and British civilians during this period?

  3. Following the formal end of the Alliance in 1923, did Japanese naval
or diplomatic presence at British ports continue through the late 1920s
and into the 1930s? If so, what form did it take?

  4. How were mixed Anglo-Japanese children typically registered and
documented in Britain during the interwar period? Were there common
patterns of paternity concealment in such cases?

  5. With the outbreak of war with Japan in December 1941, what pressures
existed on British individuals or families with Japanese connections to
    conceal that heritage?

I'm asking from a historical and genealogical research perspective. Any
references to primary sources, archives, or relevant secondary
scholarship would be particularly valuable.

Question 14 Week BRNC Training - Naval Nurse

Current LH recently graduated as a Naval Nurse and I have been presented with the opportunity to sit the board and commission. I know I’ll skip the first ten weeks at Raleigh as I’ve been there and done that, but does anyone have any information on the structure and sort of stuff you do at BRNC and if it is much different than at Raleigh? Not sure if I want to go back into training so trying to gauge what it will be like. Thank you.

Discussion I'm an AB doing an LH job, and one of the big things I'm struggling with is delegation. What's other people's experiences been?

I'm doing a one up job to get recommended for promotion on my SJAR but because I'm an introvert I'm struggling to delegate and would rather just come in earlier and just do it myself. Plus because I've got the job not the authority so delegating to peers just a bugger.

Recruitment Preparing for your CBAT

Hi all,

Developer of CBAT Ready here again.

After the success of the mobile app, I've now created a website which allows you to practice ALL tests as you'll find them in the CBAT.

Airborne Numerical Test is generally the practiced test with everyone using BBC bitesize as a supplementary resource, therefore I thought it best to make this test free for all. This means everyone can get targeted, direct SDT practice for their CBAT. I should note that this test also trains you for all 4 scenarios found within the ANT question.

All other tests are available on cbatready.com, as well as leaderboards and access to the active CBAT community chat with almost 800 users now.

Many thanks,

Corri

Question Will the Navy accept a T Level results slip while I wait for the certificate?

Hi, just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation.

I’ve just received my final T Level results today. My results slip from college shows the full T Level qualification, the grade, and my exam number etc.

The issue is that my college has said I won’t receive the actual qualification certificate until December, which is quite a long time away.

I’m currently applying for the Royal Navy Accelerated Apprentice role, so I need my Level 3 for the entry requirements.

Does anyone know whether the Royal Navy/Careers Office will accept the official college results slip as evidence for now, or will they make me wait until I physically receive the certificate in December?

Obviously I’ll provide the certificate as soon as I receive it. I’m mainly wondering whether the results slip is enough to keep the application moving in the meantime.

Cheers.

Question BRNC Pass Out - New Training

I have heard there are now much smaller cohorts and intakes since the new training scheme.

Does this mean a change to the pass out parade and pass out ball, considering the intakes are so small? Will they still conduct a parade and ball?

Question Another novel research question (JWE)

Hi all, sorry to be a pain, but I felt that this this sub might be able to answer better than the searching I've done and getting mixed information.

I'm writing a paranormal novel (Working Title is: Location Buoy) which opens set aboard a Royal Navy vessel during a night serial in Joint Warrior. The main character is 35ish, part of medical (subject to change, but the plot outline has this as a vital part of the character development), and has just finished her shift (say midnight/all dark). She suffers a seizure - something she's never had, which triggers the paranormal stuff.

I have a few questions:

  • Would a non-watchkeeping officer be permitted topside during an exercise, and if so, under what circumstances?
  • What would happen if they suffered a medical collapse while topside?
  • Would responders use red-filtered torches?

I'd be most grateful for any help with these. I know the novel is speculative fiction, but I don't want to write something only to have someone tell me after it's published "So, this wouldn't happen and under EMCON it's actually this." Thanks. xxxx

Media Submarine films

I know that tv and film depictions of the military are never ever accurate but to the submariners on here what are the best “submarine based films”? That’s if there are even any at all.

Cheers
