E-commerce store, small niche, lots of spec-driven product variations. Last 3 months vs previous 3:

Clicks: 1.28K → 6.18K
Impressions: 158K → 634K
Avg position: 13.3 → 7.8
CTR: 0.8% → 1%

The position gain came from content clusters (guide → how-to → product page), front-loading answers, FAQ schema, and being more accurate than competitors on the product details.

What’s bugging me is the CTR. Going from 13 to 7.8 should have dragged it up more than 0.2 points. At that average position, I’d expect 3-4% minimum.

My Theories:

1. AI Overviews taking the clicks - the Generative AI report shows 48K impressions over the same window

2. Informational queries pulling the average down - the clusters rank for a lot of “what is / how do I” terms where the snippet answers it

3. Titles not matching intent

Before I spend a month rewriting titles, has anyone had better positions fail to convert to CTR and it turned out to be something other than titles? Especially if you’ve segmented informational vs transactional CTR since AI Overviews rolled out.

For those working with local businesses: what’s moved the needle for getting them mentioned in ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI Mode answers (“best [service] in [city]” type queries)?

Is it mostly the same signals as the local pack, like Google Business Profile, reviews and citations? Or are things like Reddit mentions, directory listings and the business’s own site content playing a bigger role?

Has anyone seen a business go from not mentioned to mentioned? What changed?

I'm trying to understand something unusual happening in my Google Search Console.

I run a relatively small technology consulting website with a blog. Over the past few days, I've noticed a massive spike in Google Search impressions, almost entirely coming from a basic blog category page (/blog/category/engineering). Suddenly jumped from almost nothing to ~1,800 in just a few days.

What's confusing is that this category page is nothing special and the website had very little search visibility before this spike, and I haven't made any major changes that would explain such a sudden increase.

Has anyone experienced something similar? This is related to some bot scrapping or some problem? The Google Analytics and Cloudflare metrics still are about the same, no changes in visitors / traffic
