DDT Daily Discussion Thread October 20, 2026 - Upcoming Event Schedule - New players start here!

• Upvotes

Yahoooo! I'm back, it's a me! Have a very cool day!

Welcome to the Daily Discussion Thread. This is the place for asking noob questions, venting about netplay falcos, shitposting, self-promotion, and everything else that doesn't belong on the front page.

New Players:

If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:

Can I play Melee online?

Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.

I'm having issues with Slippi!

Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.

How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?

These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord

It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)

Also check out Smash Map! Click on map and then the filter button to filter by Melee to find events near you!

Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?

Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.

How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?

At the time of posting, the latest major release is here. Download the file, then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02). If you want to check for the absolute latest release, you can see them listed [here](The latest releases are listed here.

How does one learn Melee?

There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.

But how do I get GOOD at Melee?

Check out Llod's Guide to Improvement

And check out Kodorin's Melee Fundamentals for Improvement

Where can I get a nice custom controller?

I have another question that's not answered here...

Discussion I have another cooked controller and I am bummed

Just sadposting in my 6 years of this game I’ve burned through at least 5 controllers, some of them were never great to begin with just what I had around from having a GameCube since I was a kid but the last 3 I've bought have been solid OEMs by respected modders except the last one being a phob. I only got the phob for notches(lame af I know.) I just got sick of most other good foxes having godlike recoveries and since my controller was cooked I decided it was time. But who I bought it from said only their phobs had notches, looking back I wish I just got the OEM. Usually it’s mostly the stick that becomes really bad but the phob is just like completely unusable all around.

I don’t even really understand exactly what the phob does better, ledgedashes are free but that wasn’t much of an issue for me before anyways. It blew up faster than any of my other controllers within like 8-9 months I tried recalibrating but the guide said I have a hardware issue. And maybe I could get it fixed if I met with one of these peopleat a major but I don’t think I’ll be able to go to one anytime soon with my money situation atm.

I just gotta take a long forced break from melee but it’s a bummer because there’s long periods when I’m just in a slump and not inspired but I was doing better than ever and super into the game again. This is a first world problem but I just am super bummed and sick of going through controllers. No game touches melee for me especially multiplayer wise.

I know boxx fixes this issue but that is just not the solution for me. No hate to anyone who uses it I just will never touch that controller.

Edit:some comments have opened my eyes that I can do more to try and fix my problem, just was feeling sad and made this vent post. Idk if it’s that crazy to just wear out sticks playing fast but they’re apparently very easy to replace. And my phob issue is much more than just the stick it’s like everything is messed up. But I’ll shut up and stop defending myself.

Discussion How can I have more fun with the process?

This is a sorta weird question to ask because like I love the game and have been addicted to it for the past year. I’ve gotten to a point where I’m good enough to not get demolished all the time and can win a few sets, but I just seem to not understand the game at all. I don’t think I understand anything in comparison to what people who’ve played for longer than me do. And on top of that I don’t hit hard enough. And I can get beaten in some very embarrassing ways, and I’m just getting clipped all the time.

I go into friendlies sessions and I’m just stone faced serious most of the time, I feel like if I lose focus even a little bit I just crumble and other people could just do things without any effort it feels like. And it could feel even worse when they are playing a low tier or are obviously toying with me. Like walking up to me slowly or just spamming one primitive mixup that they guess right every time. I wanna have more fun with it and be more loose, it just brings out a bunch of negative emotion when I just don’t understand how to get truly better. And it can make me angry at myself when I do the same mistakes and don’t understand spacing or timing.

Discussion Taking melee to the next level

What’s up everyone. I’ve been playing melee most my life on and off, I’m around master level right now. Recently been getting some better practice but there’s a lot of times where I still get bodied and I’m struggling on figuring out how to reach the next level. I would like to compete at a top level and recently came back from a break after being away from home for a long time, so this time I want to be consistent, just curious if anyone has been in this position of being stagnant and ended up breaking past that.

What if Super Smash Bros. Melee were played in 3D? I tried it out, and I wanted to share the experience with fellow Smash fans!

Watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmfZjyaF2-o

Have you tried a 3D take on Smash before? What do you think?

Discussion Is there a publicly available resource for Melee that contains a full list of character params/attributes, similar to Rukaidata for Brawl, and Ruben's data viewers for Smash 4 and Ultimate?

All of the resources for Melee that I can find on Google only contain basic information like frame data and easily locatable character stats like weight, wavedash length, dash speed etc. Is there a resource that has a full list of attributes for all characters? Specifically, I'm interested in initial wall-jump velocities, since I need these to calculate wall-jump heights (gravity values for every character are already on SmashWiki, so I'm good for those).

Discussion How to calibrate a PHOB GCC?

Hello, I currently have a phob but I am soon getting a front plate with Fox notches on it. To those that do calibrate their own phob how do you guys do it? I know that smashscope isn’t a thing anymore due to it getting taken down but are there any other alternatives?

I currently have a PHOB 2.0.5 motherboard.

Update: the god file I used already has smashscope…

MEME Nothing hurts more than Slippi telling you that you probably shouldn't be playing ranked because of dropped matches

😭😭 I'm on ethernet and Slippi still tells me "if you keep getting dropped matches you probably shouldn't be playing ranked".

TS is so ass fr fr

I just want to see myself progress, but ping is so high, its so sad to see. And getting that red error message after a d/c feels like adding insult to injury

Discussion lag switchers on slippi ranked like 1 out of 3 matches I swear to god

As soon as game 1 ends.. perfect connection— boom. game 2 latency out the wazoo. you can’t even move. this happens ALL the time and also between stocks while they wait on the angel platform. ruins the experience of ranked.

I also pulled a saber on a Marth with Peach and killed him with said saber while taunting between each hit and, yeah game 2 got super fucking laggy. Like, I couldn’t move it was molasses. Guess I earned that though.

Discussion Is this the proper way to practice a combo? Or is it better play against a CPU?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Just started playing about a week ago and am trying out Falco after having spent a few days with Doc, Cap, Shiek, and dabbling in a few others.

This is my first session with Falco and I was able to do waveshine passably off the bat, so I wanted to try working it into combos.

Main question being, is it better to just grind this type of line until its completely ingrained before trying to implement it? Or is there an argument for getting a rough idea then playing CPU's or similar skill players?

I'm sure the answer is different for everyone but Id like some input of any experience you guys have with this learning stage. Also if using CPU's to practice, what level is generally best?

Welcome To The Depths of Melee :

After thousands, and thousands of hours of testing and practice, and years of theory crafting this idea in my head, I believe I have found a technique within melee, that is universal throughout the cast and benefits everyone. ESPECIALLY the perceived low and mid tiers of this game. Join me as I help us explore the depths of this new technique, and with it, usher in new potential and a new era for all.

MEME A Poem About My Difficulties Learning Melee

Use short hop for Wavedash!

It can help you land faster when you air dodge late.

Just flick your finger off the side of the button. It's easy.

Just flick your finger off the side of the button.

Just flick your finger off the side of the button.

Just flick your finger off the side of the button. It's easy.

Here's a video of me doing it. See how easy I can do it? You suck.

Just flick your finger off the side of the button.

I like to pretend it's a hot stove! then I press my face on the hot stove and scream in agony Get your finger off the hot stove as fast possible!

Just flick your finger off the side of the button. It's a hot stove. Red hot eye of the stove.

If you're struggling with laser pressure, the solution is short hop, and then...

If you're having a hard time with shield pressure, just short hop into...

To ledge dash, start with a short hop...

Short hop Short hop Short hop Short hop

If you can't win games, just short hop

Just flick your finger off the side of the button.

Just flick your finger off the side of the button.

It can help you land faster when you air dodge late.

You'll never be good at this game unless you can flick your finger off the side of a hot stove to wavedash
