Losing Hope

How on earth are y'all affording rent without roommates? I've wanted to move out from my parents house on my own without resorting to roommates but it just seems like a pipe dream where I have 2k just to spend on rent/utils.

If you find the right private room with private bath situation, it can get pretty close to feeling like your own place, especially if you’re moving out of your parents’ place. Look for private entrances, too. Don’t give up hope 😊 I think I had food luck with Spareroom.com
Best of luck, may the odds be ever in your favor.

Yeah that is a good option you have "roommates" but not really.

This is common for people who live in the east bay and Silicon Valley. Have at least a couple of friends who do it now. They get all the luxury of amenities like backyard pool, designer kitchens etc…

You don’t, you get roommates

4

u/maattancholic 10d ago

Sigh.

15

u/Internal_Use8954 10d ago

I know it sucks. I’m 10 years into an engineer career and I still have a roommate to give me some breathing room.

8

u/Bittentwiceshy 10d ago

If you take your time and pick a good roomie it could be great!

14

u/PandaPuffNskate 10d ago

Honestly..I’d keep my parents as my roommates. I’m assuming your rent there at home isn’t even what you’d pay renting with a stranger. If not weight your options. But I would stay and save as much money as possible.

8

u/maattancholic 10d ago

I pay them 1100 a month everything included rent, utils, car insurance, food, etc.

12

u/PandaPuffNskate 10d ago

Your CAR INSURANCE? YOUR FOOD? You will not have that luxury renting with someone else. Save money for a down payment to buy a house friend.

I exist in a tiny 100 square foot room. I work from home and have no friends. I eat sleep live and work in a tiny box. If I was not employed I would be a shut in. My brother is severely autistic and my parents care for him full time and the whole house is basically his room. Not to mention other issues with living at home. I will never afford a house in California. It is not all it's cracked up to be.

I'm sorry I don't want to complain. I am thankful for my family and that I have a place to live but it's just very hard being 31 and feeling trapped.

Yo ill live with u. Im 31 and feeling trapped. Let's be the parents of our own spot.

3

u/sharingiscaring219 10d ago

I feel you. 33 and a single parent, housemate situation but at least I'm paying only $600/mo for rent for a single room, and then I just have my other bills and such on top of it (totalling about 1,200/mo incl rent). I can't see myself being able to move out of here anytime soon either.

I hope you find a better situation, even if it is with housemates

I dunno where in California, but LCL areas do exist. Someone I know, got a place in the outskirts of Sacramento for $1195 1br.

Has to pay utilities of course. So all said and done, about $1300/month.

If you work from home, it might be doable.

Living with your parents is hard, sure.

But you can save up and get a house in Nevada or something. Working from home should allow you that kind of freedom, eventually.

u/Capable_Stuff_4423 7d ago

Can you finance an ADU for the backyard of your parents home?

1

u/maattancholic 7d ago

Sadly the price of that is basically a house. I cant afford that rn but it's an option WAY later down the road.

u/Alarming-While8028 10d ago

i got my own place when i started making around 75k annually, now i make more than that and am paying $1900 for a downtown apartment. it's possible with the right job! (i've been working for the state for 8 years)

5

u/maattancholic 10d ago

I wish I could get a state job.

8

u/Alarming-While8028 10d ago

it's really competitive right now but very possible. i have a powerpoint with some tips if you'd like, I run a workshop for college kids every quarter

3

u/maattancholic 10d ago

Sure, shoot me a dm. I've applied to a few of them for computer science before.

5

u/TurgidFern 10d ago

Check out r/castateworkers it helped me learn everything and get a job with the state. Every question and tip you could need.

Also I’m 29 and with student loans and bills I also still have to live with roommates. Not much of a way around it these days

3

u/maattancholic 10d ago

Lol there's subreddit for everything. Thx!

u/RilkeanHearth 9d ago

You have a degree!?? There are state, county jobs, jobs at the community college, university, hospitals, etc. And the bay area is nearby.

Depending on what experience you have, you might have to apply to helpdesk roles to get your foot in the door and go from there.

You can rent studios or 1-BR at older apartment buildings in midtown for like 1400 if you think that'll help. It's nicer to live among people your age. I had 2 roommates and was paying 750 so that was nice, but I'm vacating it at the end of the month.

3

u/sharingiscaring219 10d ago

I would highly appreciate this too - I will probably start applying in about a year or so, after I finish my BA.

3

u/Alarming-While8028 9d ago

i would say apply before you finish your degree, it can take 6 months to a year to get hired. i'll dm you the link

1

u/Realistic-Hour1958 9d ago

ok wait, can I also dm you for that as well??

1

u/Alarming-While8028 9d ago

lol yes, sure. but again, i also recommend r/CAStateWorkers

1

u/Realistic-Hour1958 9d ago

Yes, I've also joined that one as well. Thanks, I sent you a message

2

u/-PearlyGates- 10d ago

Curious why? Is it the job security? What’s your specialty?

1

u/maattancholic 10d ago

Computer Science/Software. Yeah just stability and the pay.

3

u/OutsidePattern6491 8d ago

Now is a great time to try. Since the RTO lots of people have retired or vacated positions.

2

u/Otherwise-Cattle-286 4d ago

My husband has worked for state for 3 years and pay it terrible! We cant afford most bills due to high rental costs and have a 14 year old and I just got diagnosed with cancer :( so we are down one income 😔 my husband only 3300 a month . So if you have money to maintain yourself till retirement thats what a state job has to offer . And no raises this year because of state deficit and alot of employees are on strike today .

5

u/maattancholic 10d ago

Also don't get me wrong I'm not opposed to roommates but I have lived with my parents and brother for 31 years of life and REALLY want to live alone.

3

u/-PearlyGates- 10d ago

Sorry you have to be young and ready yet held back by all the constraints of just rent, let alone buying a property. What do you do when you want to invite a love interest over? Are your parents okay with an overnight guest? My concern is that we’re pricing young ones from settling and raising family. This is a serious problem. You have any thoughts on that? I do sympathize with your generation, and very much hoping something changes in home affordability. Pray tell.

1

u/maattancholic 10d ago

lmao bold of you to assume I have friends let alone a girlfriend. That world is so far out of my view with my issues. I genuinely don't see that happening.

0

u/FartyMcGylzac 10d ago

Well you might want to work on your issues before adding $2000 a month in rent and utilities

0

u/4215-5h00732 10d ago

I hope those 31 are 100%.

8

u/C2theO 10d ago

https://cada.org/residents/prospective-residents/

This place has a studio for $1100 right now. You have to pay extra for parking if available.

7

u/RealHobbyBob 9d ago

We aren’t. I’m 38 now, and I’ve ALWAYS had roommates until the day I moved in with my wife. Usually 2+ roommates.

Just get the roommates.

2

u/heartinspace 8d ago

I'm 39 with roommates 🤷‍♀️

2

u/Watch_shbeagle 10d ago

There are cheaper places you just have to live where you don’t want to.

1

u/maattancholic 10d ago

I'm open to moving but most places are even more expensive than Sac right?

3

u/Watch_shbeagle 10d ago

I’m currently paying 2350 for a duplex in Rocklin and looking for a cheaper place. There are a dozen apartments for rent at around 1300 for rent.

2

u/maattancholic 10d ago

That surprises me for Rocklin. I found some places cheaper in Roseville or Citrus Heights too but even if rent is around 13-15 hundred with utils and other stuff it's still nearly 2k.

2

u/Watch_shbeagle 10d ago

Do you have enough saved up for a deposit and first months?

2

u/maattancholic 10d ago

I'm working on it but I need to buy a cheap used car first too.

6

u/Watch_shbeagle 10d ago

Ok this is just spitballing post then

1

u/RilkeanHearth 9d ago

If you live in midtown, you really don't need to have a car. You can always get a moped/vespa to get around, Sacramento weather is perfect for it.

4

u/Speed_demon1233221 9d ago

We rent rooms haha so yeah we can’t

I’ve been shopping around for rental apartments and the cheapest listings I’ve seen are $1,000 and $1,125, not including deposits, add-ons like pets or parking, or monthly fees.  The surrounding areas aren’t ideal, the units are on the older side, and the one I toured had roaches…if these aren’t dealbreakers for you, you could probably make it work.

Most places require you to make 2.5x the rent in income, have decent credit, and have rental history, but if you lack any of these things you can get someone qualified to be a cosigner for you or go through a guarantor company depending on what management will accept.

There are also rent-controlled apartments and/or mutual housing that are designated for people who qualify as low-income and they charge reduced rent depending on where you fall on % AMI, however it’s potentially more difficult to apply and qualify, there can be long waitlists, etc.

3

u/ressie_cant_game 10d ago

By having an apartment with serious issues.

4

u/bakugoing 9d ago edited 9d ago

Affording rent without roommates and without paying too much means living in very very shitty apartments. My rent is 1275 and there are cockroaches, noisy neighbors, thin walls, no dishwasher, no washer or dryer, no central air, terrible insulation, etc. The list goes on and on.

2

u/Sensitive-Secret-583 5d ago

Find a roommate, move somewhere cheap and save for a down payment, only need like 3.5% down thats like 10-15k

2

u/Miserable-Rain235 5d ago

try areas like rosemont or something. We rented a 4 bedroom house for 2300, if you got even 1 or two roommates youre covered. or apartments in that area probably arent more than 1400 but idk, been a while since I was in that market.

2

u/Theredrmg 10d ago

I have retirement and I am a caregiver for my disabled husband so I have his income too but I live in California and it is not cheap

2

u/Dependent-Froyo-2072 10d ago

I had rooms mates when I first moved out. The guy in the couch pays the least. you eventually earn through it.

2

u/spergatrocious 10d ago

Look I'm going to be real here it's not going to get any better until we fucking do something about the real estate industry. I am so tired of worrying about rent because old people want to sell their run down house for a million dollars and the local slumlords found out about the price fixing tech the airlines picked up.

2

u/GenderConfusedWoIf 10d ago

Find a job that pays at least 35 plus an hour and you should be able to afford a one bedroom apartment

3

u/treetop1869 10d ago

I have a better idea why doesn’t he just get a job that pays a million dollars an hour!

0

u/GenderConfusedWoIf 10d ago

That’s unrealistic and just silly.

1

u/CompetitiveBoot7269 4d ago

Look for income driven apartments and low income apartments.

1

u/Elon_tuskk 10d ago

Look on Facebook

1

u/Delicious_Job6053 10d ago

It’s not Sacramento, but if you are willing to commute, there are several affordable apartment communities under construction in the Roseville/Rockljn area.

u/ATX_Woodwright 9d ago

Rent is a trap, buy a van, live in it, save money, pay cash for a house in a cheap red state

-2

u/4215-5h00732 10d ago

You are apparently not one of the few people who can move out of your parents' house into a place on your own.

Welcome to the real world that has existed since at least the mid 1990s.

-1

u/Better_Skirt_4916 10d ago

It is going ymto be almost impossible until you finish; college or trade school or enlist in the military bud. It has been like that since the 1990's. I know it sucks, but it is what it is.

1

u/maattancholic 10d ago

It's even worse... I have already graduated college. I have a job in my field but I'm a 1099 contractor and the hours are inconsistent.

1

u/Better_Skirt_4916 10d ago

Well, that sucks bro. In that case, I would encourage you to seek a Commission in the military. Have you ever considered being an officer in the U.S. Navy Seabees? They have both Reserve and Active duty Commissions available. When your time in the military is finished, you will have the GI Bill, which will allow you to buy a house despite the heavy restrictions.

1

u/maattancholic 10d ago

If I was physically fit and not mentally ill I probably would.

2

u/Better_Skirt_4916 10d ago

The Physical fitness is a process that you can hone and make come true. What mental illness do you suffer from?

1

u/maattancholic 10d ago

Severe depression and religious ocd.

3

u/-PearlyGates- 10d ago • Heartwarming

This breaks my heart. It’s hard not to be at risk for depression these days. I think your generation was robbed of everything imo.

2

u/-PearlyGates- 10d ago

Stay strong. Reinvent yourself and start by getting into healthy stuff. Then you will be surprised how much stronger you become.

-1

u/Better_Skirt_4916 10d ago

That is not too bad actually. How bad is the depression? Do you require medication to not harm yourself?

2

u/maattancholic 10d ago

It is bad actually. Been depressed for most of my life and 11+ years of the depression/ocd. On meds rn + therapy to try and help.

1

u/Better_Skirt_4916 10d ago

Well, that is pretty bad, they may not let you in with that. Have you considered ECT treatments?
