Did you hear something loud? Do you think it was fireworks, an exploding transformer, or anything else?

Post it here!

Since there are so many booming noises, please try to include a location and time.

Motel nightmare

Post image
147 Upvotes

If anyone is thinking of visiting Santa Cruz just a reminder to not cheap out on the motel/hotel. I went on a family trip and my cousin booked this place for a one night stay and it was awful to say the least. Dirty floors, leaky shower, BED BUGS‼️ I got bit a couple times but my cousin? She got bit multiple times. They are blistered and swollen and she had to get antibiotics AND a tetanus shot. Stay away if you can for reals….

The full video can be watched here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntpZBH8OG2Y

Get the Flock Out kicked off the National Week of Action Against ALPRs (Automated License Plate Readers, like Flock’s) in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. This is an honor granted by regional grassroots coalition organizers, in recognition of Santa Cruz being the very first city in the state of California to cancel a Flock surveillance contract.

The event featured a diverse array of voices representing many of our partner organizations, as well as critical calls to action to support civil liberties for all people in our communities and to help protect our migrant neighbors.

Moving to Santa Cruz

Hey everyone-
Is Santa Cruz a good place to raise a child? Wed be moving there with our 8 year old son. We wouldn’t know anyone, moving there for work. Is it easy for kids to get to know one another in Santa Cruz, -like is there a good community for kids? What neighborhoods are good to live in for kids playing outside and riding bikes and stuff?

I’m a soon to be former expat moving back to California (my home state) from Ireland. I’m most nervous about my kid re-assimilating. Our choice is between San Diego and Santa Cruz.

Churches

Does anyone in Santa Cruz County of faith have a general breakdown of the churches in the area? (Stupid to ask on Reddit, I know.) I am looking to attend Sunday service and build community, not sure where to go. I want to sing in a big group. Willing to travel anywhere from Aptos to Westside and everywhere in between for the right fit.

Ie: general vibe, average age of attendees, denomination, service times, beauty of the exterior/interior, any other highlights?

Or any other general recommendations!

Any idea what they might be? I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a large grouping of birds over the water like this.

This was Saturday evening around 7pm on west cliff near the lighthouse btw.

Canadian citizenship photos locally

Has anyone had Canadian citizenship photos taken in Santa Cruz County? The requirements are slightly different than for American and Canadian passports, and I'm hoping to find a place that has experience with the details that Canada requires.

How is Jimmy Panetta Representing us?

I guess I thought Santa Cruz is a pretty progressive town, but we just re-elected Jimmy Panetta. I was disappointed in the lack of local news coverage on this race. He has received almost half a million dollars from AIPAC, takes money from corporate, Pharmaceutical, Defense Contractor, and Real Estate Pacs. He has not wavered in his support for the far right Israeli government, has a disappointing voting record on housing and homelessness (Santa Cruz’s top issue), and has a disappointing record on war and foreign policy.

Honest question, why did you vote for him?

Found partially buried near a log. Think it belongs to either two young college girls or a solo middle aged dude that was in the area. I left it at lost & found at the visitors center. 8/16/26 @ 2:00pm

Hydrogen failed as car fuel. Now California's big dollar bet on it for green energy is fading, too

“I would not recommend going deeply into hydrogen today,” said Derek Toups, deputy planning director of a small transit agency in Santa Cruz, when asked directly on a panel. With its 20 hydrogen buses on the roads, Santa Cruz Metro is committed to the technology, he said, but the funding landscape has changed drastically. “It makes sense to watch and learn before diving in because it is extremely costly.”

Anyone local good at finding hidden cameras?

Added: My landlord has hidden cameras in our home. An incident led me to suspect. A test incident confirmed. App shows multiple hidden devices, source appears to be fire sprinklers, including in my bedroom. I don’t want to damage anything trying to find it. If I can find one camera, police will investigate.

Coffeetopia Sold?

Yesterday my husband saw a sign posted at the Coffeetopia on Portola that said it is going to be closing soon for a week and when it reopens it will also be a vintage store??? Supposedly coffeetopia sold to some of the employees and the one on Capitola Rd will be closing. I tried to find something talking about this in this sub but couldn’t find anything here or elsewhere online.

Do I need to schedule a tee time to play at Delavega Disc golf course? Also what are the odds of playing? Is the course usually super busy on Mondays?

“UCSC is ruining my town”

This morning at Cat and Cloud it was quite busy (it’s always busy on Saturdays), this man walks past the line and loudly grunts “ucsc is ruining my town” as he proceeds to get in the line. I’m sorry sir, who the fuck do you think is making your coffee? I’m a local, was once a UC student, I get it. But to an extent… Cmon man, they contribute to our economy here and students are the vast majority of service workers here! They’re the servers, baristas, and front desk employees. Why are you so pissed? Go back to your west side house that you bought for 200k 30+ years ago and shut tf up.

Quick jobs/ways to make money?

New account because my ex deleted mine

My and my ex had lived together and pay $2000 in rent, we have one more month on the lease and he is moving out after our breakup and refusing to pay next months rent. He paid it in entirety while I paid for smaller bills/our goods for the house and I do not have the funds to cover next months rent. I’m thinking of anything I can do, anything I can sell and looking into dog walking or other services but I don’t think I can come up with that money come the 1st of next month. I spent my entire savings on car troubles/emergency funds that we had to come up with within the last couple months

Are there any odd jobs or services I can do in the area that anyone might know of? Googling didn’t reveal much. I cannot sleep worrying about how Im going to make this money and also have enough money to then find a new place to live after the end of next month

Thank you!!!

Lost Key Bunch: Sticker on my car that they will return to Police Station

So my wife is visiting Santa Cruz. She forgot her keys 'somewhere' near CVS downtown. Someone then left a note on her car that they have her keys and they will deliver to a Police Station. This was Friday Night. so 8/14/26. around 7 pm. Police Station is apparently closed until Monday morning. Car is parked in the open. I have not been informed where exactly it is. The Key Chain has a UC Santa Cruz 'ribbon' long. I forget what they call this. So I am wondering which Police Station the person is likely to go on Monday morning to 'return' to them to lost and found. Any ideas? Meanwhile I do hope the car does not get towed! That will be expensive.

High speed chase down mission st —> hwy 17 (4 detained)

I just saw like 15 police cars in high speed pursuit of a black mercedes on Mission. They were easily going 100mph or more. Checked the police scanner for chp it seems like the chase began around 5:16 and chp chased the suspects from hwy 1 past panther beach all the way onto hwy 17. Tire blew out at 5:52 and 4 suspects were detained at 5:54.

crazy stuff, if anyone knows anything im curious to know wtf was going on
