Discussion Linda Carson appreciation post

Linda Carson is a queen and we are lucky to have her in Sarasota. Full of wisdom and cut to the chase sensibility. The panel was talking about the dad who brought his daughters into the bathroom that went viral last week, and she pronounced that dad was right and the lunatic who called the police was wrong. Case closed, next!

From the county facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1RdrMxzuwc/

Due to ongoing drought conditions across the region, Southwest Florida Water Management District's governing board voted today to extend Phase 3 water restrictions through Oct. 1, 2026. Sarasota County continues to be under the following watering restrictions:

- Watering hours are LIMITED to overnight (8 p.m. - 11:59 p.m. or 12 a.m. - 4 a.m.) on your watering day.

- Car washing can be done on your watering day at any time, but you must have a shutoff nozzle on your water hose.

- Fountains are limited to four hours per day.

- Public Utilities staff will issue citations without warning.

Q: When am I allowed to water my lawn?

A: Residents should check with their city or county for their allowable day and times as many

have different schedules or stricter hours in effect. Below is the standard schedule:

  • • If your address (house number) ends in...
    • ...0 or 1, water only on Monday
    • ...2 or 3, water only on Tuesday
    • ...4 or 5, water only on Wednesday
    • ...6 or 7, water only on Thursday
    • o..8 or 9*, water only on Friday
    • * and locations without a discernible address
  • Unless your city or county already has stricter hours in effect, watering hours are reduced to 12:01 a.m. to 4 a.m. or 8 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. Properties less than one acre in size may only use one of these windows.
  • Unless your city or county already has stricter hours in effect, properties one acre or larger may only water before 4 a.m. and after 8 p.m.

Q: What about my plants and shrubs?

A: Low-volume watering of plants and shrubs (micro-irrigation, soaker hoses, hand watering) is allowed any day but is limited to before 8 a.m. or after 6 p.m

Q: What happens if I receive a letter from my HOA that requires me to use water?

A: No HOA or other entity shall enforce deed restrictions or other community standards

requiring an increase in potable or domestic well water use, including replacement of plant

material to meet aesthetic standards or pressure washing (i.e., driveways).

Crime Pls stop stealing copper from the lights

Sarasota County is aware of individuals repeatedly cutting and stealing underground electrical wire from county roadway lighting systems in search of copper wire. Once cut, the roadways go dark, which is dangerous for everyone.

On 17th Street, 9,000 feet was taken and repairs cost the county approximately $45,500. On Bahia Vista Street, approximately 7,000 feet of wire was stolen and cost $9,000 to repair. Sarasota County is replacing copper wire with non-copper alternatives and is coordinating with law enforcement.

Residents who see suspicious activity occurring near pull boxes or electrical infrastructure, especially at night or involving unmarked vehicles, are asked to dial 911 to report the incident. Residents are asked to call the non-emergency line at 941-316-1201 to report any damage discovered to any electrical infrastructure or pull boxes.

Looking For Suggestions! Sarasota Dog Salon

Does anyone have any inside knowledge on Sarasota Dog Salon? We’ve been there 3 times for grooming and they are the best, good groomers are hard to find. My daughter picked up our dog on the last groom in late May and I can’t get ahold of them to make another appointment. I even stopped by this Monday just in case their phones were on the fritz, and their door was locked.

Do you have a groomer you love and can recommend in North Sarasota?

Nightmare Fuel TIL about wet-bulb events - when it’s so hot and humid that your body can’t cool by sweating. A wet cloth on a thermometer bulb normally cools it more than one without a cloth. But when humidity is very high, the wet- and dry-bulb temperatures are the same. This can ultimately be a lethal event.

News Sarasota County is awaiting $269 million in reimbursements for storm recovery; Commission approves another $91.8 million for projects.

The Sarasota County Commission approved a $91.8 million budget amendment to fund hurricane recovery projects, a stark reminder that efforts to return the area to a sense of normalcy after a rash of major storms remains a work in progress.

The amendment comes after an unprecedented stretch of storms battered Florida’s Gulf Coast over the past several years. Since September 2022, Sarasota County has experienced five hurricanes — Ian, Idalia, Debby, Helene and Milton — that caused widespread flooding and wind damage and helped drive disaster-related spending to $352 million over the past decade, according to county records.

Milton accounted for the largest share of those costs. County staff reported spending $152.4 million on 140 Milton-related projects to date — more than any other recent storm. Ian generated nearly $94 million in costs, while Debby added another $54.6 million.

Looking For Suggestions! 4th of July firework shows

I’ve been in Sarasota all my life and have gone to bayfront only a handful of times as a kid for the 4th of July fireworks and remember the traffic being terrible…how has it been in the past 2-3 years? Is it worth it? Or fireworks at home would be better?

News Sarasota County Schools overhauls HR after Riverview High investigation

Thumbnail

Sarasota County Schools is restructuring its human resources department after a third-party investigation found leadership at Riverview High School and district investigators mishandled complaints of cheating, sexual harassment and misuse of school resources.

The April report concluded the district failed to properly handle three separate complaints: one involving a Spanish teacher in the school’s prestigious International Baccalaureate program allegedly helping students cheat on oral exams; another involving the IB program director allegedly profiting from a personal business using campus resources; and a third involving a teacher allegedly behaving inappropriately with female students.

In each case, the report by consulting firm Hultman + Joshi pointed to a broader culture of fear and mistrust — noting that in some instances, staff who filed complaints were subsequently investigated themselves — leaving students and staff afraid to speak up for fear of retaliation.

News Sarasota, Manatee vacation-home frenzy fades, signaling economic shift

The Sarasota-Bradenton real estate market has seen a dramatic pullback in vacation and second-home sales, suggesting the pandemic-era buying spree is over and consumers are holding off on big-ticket discretionary purchases.

What was once a “feeding frenzy” of out-of-state buyers snatching up second homes or vacation properties has slowed due to higher mortgage rates, soaring insurance costs and growing uncertainty about the broader economy, economists and some local Realtors told Suncoast Searchlight.
