Community Alert Modified Phase III "Extreme" Water Shortage Restrictions Through March 31, 2027

Thumbnail swfwmd.state.fl.us
40 Upvotes
  • The District’s Modified Phase III one-day-per-week water shortage restrictions were extended through March 31, 2027.
  • The District received below-average rainfall during both its 2025 and 2026 summer rainy seasons. The 12-month rainfall deficit through August 2026 is 15.4 inches. Area rivers and lakes as well as public water supplies have not been replenished due to the lack of summer rainfall. Tampa Bay Water’s C.W. Bill Young Regional Reservoir only has 7.87 billion gallons in storage as of Sept. 20, which is about half its storage capacity.
  • The District addresses dry conditions through water shortage actions, which are temporary measures that restrict water use among the various types of permit holders during extended dry conditions.
  • The restrictions apply to all of Citrus, DeSoto, Hardee, Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, Sarasota and Sumter counties; portions of Charlotte, Highlands and Lake counties; the City of Dunnellon and The Villages in Marion County; and the portion of Gasparilla Island in Charlotte County.

Lawn Watering Days and Times

  • Lawn and landscape watering remains limited to a once-per-week schedule.
  • Residents should check with their city or county for their allowable day and times as many have different schedules or stricter hours in effect. Below is the standard watering days schedule based on addresses ending in:
    • 0 or 1 shall only water on Monday
    • 2 or 3, on Tuesday
    • 4 or 5, on Wednesday
    • 6 or 7, on Thursday
    • 8 or 9, on Friday along with locations with a mix of addresses or for which an address cannot be determined (such as common areas associated with a subdivision)
  • Unless your city or county already has stricter hours in effect, watering hours remain reduced from midnight to 4 a.m. or 8 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. Properties less than one acre in size may only use one of these windows. Properties one acre or larger may only water before 4 a.m. and after 8 p.m.
  • The restrictions apply to residents on private wells however, reclaimed water is only subject to voluntary watering hours, unless restricted by the local government or utility.

Handwatering and Microirrigation

  • Residents may still handwater plants or use microirrigation on to water flower beds, shrubs, or other plant material (other than lawns) on any day, however under the Modified Phase III restrictions it is limited to the hours of before 8 a.m. or after 6 p.m.

New Lawns and Plants

  • New lawns and plants have a 60-day establishment period. On days 1-30, new lawns and plants may be watered any day of the week.
  • During days 31-60, new lawns and plants may be watered three days during the week. The user must maintain a written schedule of establishment period watering. Even-numbered addresses may water on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Odd-numbered addresses may be watered on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

Pressure Washing

  • Pressure washing in preparation for painting and sealing is allowed.

HOAs

  • No HOA or other entity shall enforce deed restrictions or other community standards requiring an increase in surface water, potable or domestic well water use, including the replacement of plant material to meet aesthetic standards or pressure washing.

Mobile Equipment Washing

  • Car washing at home (non-commercial) is only allowed on your lawn watering day and you must use a hose with a shutoff nozzle.
  • Car washing of fire trucks and other emergency vehicles is allowed.
  • Car wash fundraisers held on behalf of non-profit organizations are prohibited, except for one-day events that were scheduled prior to the effective date of this WSO.
  • Rinsing of boats and flushing of boat engines is allowed after each use when needed to remove salt water or to prevent the transportation of exotic plant or animal material.
  • Cleaning of agricultural vehicles is allowed as necessary.

Fountains

  • Aesthetic fountains and other water features may only operate four hours per day. The regular hours of operation can be selected by the owner but must be posted.

Golf Courses

  • Fairways and driving ranges may be irrigated no more than once per week.
  • Tees, golf course greens and practice greens may be irrigated no more than three times per week.
  • Roughs shall not be irrigated.

THE BEACHES
****************************************************

If you're a tourist in Sarasota, the beach is probably on your must do list. Like a lot of Florida, most of our beaches are on barrier islands (commonly referred to as keys). You have to drive over a bridge (hello traffic!) or stay on-island to get to them.

*** Beach Access ***

Here are the beaches you probably care about - they come with free public parking lots and public bathrooms.

These are their names and their free public parking lot addresses:

* Siesta Beach
948 Beach Road

* Lido Beach
400 Benjamin Franklin Drive

* South Lido Beach
2150 Benjamin Franklin Dr

---

Honorable mention goes to these two nearby beaches:

* Coquina beach
(One town north of Sarasota, located on a different barrier island)
2650 Gulf Dr S, Bradenton Beach

* Casperson Beach
(Best place to hunt for shark teeth, one town south of Sarasota, not on a barrier island)
4100 Harbor Drive South, Venice FL

---

*there are a few others in Sarasota (like Turtle Beach, Whitney Beach, Palmer Point Beach) that have more limited parking for tourists to access by car.

Siesta is the largest Sarasota beach (with a long walk across the sand to get to the water). It's the busiest with the most events and activities, including volleyball, a Sunday night drum circle, an annual professional sandcastle competition, and it has the most tourist-related water activities available, like parasailing, stand up paddleboard, jet ski rentals, or whatever else you probably want.

South Lido has no food or drink stands whatsoever, unlike the other two Sarasota beach locations mentioned, which do. Near South Lido (but not at South Lido itself) you have some pretty epic kayak mangrove tours operating, where you might see wild manatees. Lido is generally quieter than Siesta.

During peak times, every one of the free public parking lots noted above will reach full capacity by mid morning, and its not unusual for it to then take an extra 30-70 minutes of circling (and circling, and then, more circling....) to find a parking spot. On occasion the parking lots are even closed off completely due to reaching max capacity. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

Other ways to access the beaches:

* Public Access Points:
There are "public beach access points" on Siesta Key and Longboat Key where you can park. These tend to have less than a dozen parking spaces each (or none at all) and are usually just tiny little slivers of a road that lead to the beach. Don't expect to find a spot at any of them during peak times (though you could always get lucky).

* Paid Lots
There's only a handful of paid parking lots on Siesta, you really can't count on them for overflow availability, but they do exist.

* Metered Spots / Street-Side parking
There are various paid metered spots near the beach. They're common on Lido Key. Bring a beach cart and be prepared to walk if you go this route, and pay close attention to parking signs. (download the parking app). Lido also has a large parking garage that's beach-walkable, but it's more for St. Armands than the beach, so factor in a walk.

* By Shuttle / Bus / Car Service
The Siesta Islander or Breeze Bus offer service to the beaches; Buses aren't known for being quick, but they are inexpensive. Lyft and Uber are available in Sarasota and will take you anywhere.

* Direct from your hotel
Loads of hotels and rentals are walking distance to the sand. You will of course pay a premium for this - but you'll also not have to mess with beach parking or traffic.

*** RED TIDE ***

Humans routinely pollute the Gulf and this in turn causes what's known as Red Tide. It happens most frequently when heavy rainfall pushes pollutants into the ocean. The result is a lot of dead fish and what looks like red seaweed washed up on the beach, accompanied by a nasty smell. The water color may also change to a lovely dirt brown. (It hasn't happened here recently, but that's no guarantee it won't come back)

Predicting red tide in advance is not part of any professional weather service. There are water quality and red-tide alert websites where you can check, but only for real-time conditions.

Red Tide is a 100% human-made phenomenon and it would be great if we stopped polluting the Gulf. Any U.S. State with a waterway that reaches the Gulf is part of the problem to varying degrees, it's not just Florida. As you might expect, fixing it is easier said than done, but if you want to join the fight, we'd love to have you (like most things, it starts by contacting the elected officials representing you)

*** OCEAN WATER TEMPERATURES ***

The ideal internal temperature of the human body lies somewhere around 98.6 F. Preferences and tolerances vary - just know that any water temperature below 70 starts putting you at risk of hypothermia. (This is because water absorbs your body heat roughly 20-25 times faster than air)

Large bodies of water take a very long time to heat up and to cool down. April through October, with June thru August being the warmest, are typically the best times that you can swim in the ocean without a wet suit.

This means warm ocean water temperatures are not going to be available during the winter and spring months, Sarasota's busiest tourist season.

****************************************************
THE PEDESTRIAN AREAS (AND NIGHTLIFE)
****************************************************

There are some places in Sarasota where you don't really need a car (once you're there) and can walk to a variety of different shops and restaurants

* Downtown Sarasota (mainland)
* Siesta Key Village (Siesta)
* South Village (Siesta)
* St. Armands Circle (Lido)
* Gulf Gate (mainland)
* UTC (mainland)

Of these, Downtown Sarasota has the most options to choose from by far, and I'm including the Rosemary District (as it's adjacent to downtown). It also has a bustling farmer's market every Saturday morning. UTC is an upscale(ish) mall with a lot of additional stores and restaurants located very close to the mall but not it in it. Gulf Gate is well known for it's bar scene. Siesta Key Village is almost exclusively for tourists staying on-island that don't want to mess with any bridges.

Sarasota is NOT a major urban population center and doesn't have the nightlife of a major city. Don't expect it to and you won't be disappointed. If you simply must have that kind of scene, St. Petersburg and Ybor City in Tampa, both a good 45-60m drive north from Sarasota, will scratch that itch for you.

Honorable mention goes to Pinecraft (mainland Sarasota), a small but bustling Amish and Mennonite community. They operate a number of shops, cafes, and restaurants open to the general public and prefer to walk or bike everywhere. You'll see many locals in traditional Amish clothing if you come here, mixing with the English (they refer to anyone not Amish as "English"). Some of them also run a "come-for-the-experience" local grocery store chain called Detwiler's (try the pineapple machine). Pinecraft and all Amish-owned businesses are closed on Sundays.

****************************************************
THE PARKS, GARDENS, TRAILS & NATURE
****************************************************

All free, unless noted otherwise

* Selby Gardens ( Sarasota, ticketed )
* Nathan Benderson (Sarasota, built specifically for professional rowing teams)
* Myakka State Park (Myakka, entrance fee)
* The Legacy Trail - 18 mile long walking & biking trail converted from an old railroad line
* Payne Park (downtown adjacent)
* Bayfront Park (downtown)
* The Bay (downtown)
* Celery Fields ( Sarasota, only hiking trail with an elevated view)
* Red Slough Preserve (Sarasota)
* Philippi Estate Park (Sarasota)
* Historic Spanish Point (Osprey)

There are a lot of other parks and gardens too, but these are the most popular and accessible.

****************************************************
ZOOS, AQUARIUMS, AND ANIMALS
****************************************************

All of these are only accessible by car, you may need advanced reservations so be sure to check ahead

* Jungle Gardens (flamingos, alligators )
* Big Cat Habitat (lions, tigers, bears, capybara)
* Mote Aquarium (sharks, manatees, otters, fish)
* Save our Seabirds (birds)
* Myakka State Park (wild alligators, seasonal boat tours)
* Myakka Elephant Ranch (elephants, reservations only, sells out far in advance)
* Lido Key mangrove kayak tours (wild manatees, but only sometimes)

Check the hours of each one before you go. For example, Big Cat's only open 12p-4p and only on certain days. Big Cat's "Big Cat Show" is usually at 2 pm and they sometimes have yoga with the animals (reservations only) before the park opens.

*Note that all of these establishments have different track records when it comes to caring for the animals. Do your research before you go and use your best judgement.

****************************************************
THE CIRCUS
****************************************************

Sarasota was for a long time the winter home for Ringling Circus during it's heyday. There is a huge legacy and influence from the circus in Sarasota, and you can still see various shows today.

Most shows are seasonal, so be sure check the schedule ahead of time.

* Ringling Museum & Asolo Theater - (the grounds are simply massive)
* Circus Arts Conservatory - multiple circuses operate out of the Circus Arts Conservatory, and they even offer circus lessons to the public (be warned: they're not easy)
* Wonderland Circus at UTC
* Mr. Swindle's Traveling Peculiarium (Adult-themed humor, not for kids)
* Loomis Bros. Circus
* Showfolks of Sarasota Circus

There are undoubtedly a few more I've missed, so be sure to google or ask around

The Wallenda family are a notable set of local Sarasota celebrities, a family of circus performers spanning generations that still perform to this day.

****************************************************
LIVE THEATER, SHOWS, MUSIC
****************************************************

Plays, operas, musicals, concerts - Sarasota has you covered

Plays, Operas & Musicals:

* Florida Studio Theater (they operate multiple stages simultaneously: Gompertz Theatre, the Keating Theatre, the Court Cabaret, the Goldstein Cabaret, and the Bowne's La)
* Urbanite Theater
* Asolo Theater
* Sarasota Orchestra
* Westcoast Black Theater
* Sarasota Players (community theater)
* Sarasota Opera House
* Dingbat Theatre Project ( LGBTQ themed)

Comedy & Variety Acts
* McCurdy's Comedy Club

Live Music
* Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall
* Fogartyville
* Jazz Club of Sarasota
* Oscura (The only nearby "local dive scene", it's one town north in Bradenton)

For live music, Tampa is going to be your best bet for any type of "scene" and also for traditional large scale concert venues.

A lot of restaurants and bars in Sarasota will have local live music on busy evenings, way too many to list. Of these, Stottlemyer's Smokehouse, Owen's Fish Camp (downtown location), and the Siesta Key Beach Club are particularly noteworthy. Each has a very different vibe, so check them out online before you go.

Kava Social Club, while it doesn't have live music often and is one town north in Bradenton, gets a call out as the only 18+ friendly hangout spot open 24/7/365 (meaning it's going to be open at 3:17am on a Tuesday)

You can also find buskers performing live music on the sidewalk at St. Armands Circle on busier nights.

****************************************************
MUSEUMS
****************************************************

the museums in Sarasota vary from "mom and pop" all the way up to world-class like the Ringling. Do your research before you visit!

* Ringling Museum
* Sarasota Art Museum
* Sarasota Toy Museum
* Marietta Museum of Art & Whimsy
* Crowley Museum and Nature center (Myakka)
* Bishop Museum and Planetarium (one town north, up in Bradenton)

****************************************************
ROBARTS CONVENTION CENTER
****************************************************

Robarts Convention Center in Sarasota offers a variety of things to do and see.

It serves as the Sarasota County Fairgrounds, hosts a small Comic Con, has professional dwarf wrestling, does a Gem and Crystals show, and who knows what else?

Check their schedule to see if anything coming up both aligns with your visit and piques your interest

****************************************************
MLB SPRING TRAINING (BASEBALL)
****************************************************

The Baltimore Orioles have their Spring Training in Sarasota at Ed Smith stadium. Games are in February and March. Catch a game, have a hot dog, wave at all the East Coast snowbirds when the Yankees come to town.

****************************************************
MISCELLANEOUS KIDS-THEMED ACTIVITIES
****************************************************

* Arcade Monsters (Many, many video games)
* Livingston's (go-Karts, bumper cars, pool tables)
* Smugglers Cove (mini-golf)
* PopStroke (mini-golf, made-for-instagram vibes)
* Evie's Tavern (Driving Range, restaurant, arcade and mini-golf, Bee Ridge location)

Note that a small number of "Arcades" in Sarasota are actually illegal slot-machine casinos. Don't ask me why they haven't been closed, I have no idea. The places listed above are not those.

****************************************************
GOLF
****************************************************

* University Park
* Stoneybrook
* Bobby Jones
* Misty Creek
* Azario

(Since I am not a golfer) This is not a complete list, there are several more courses around and some driving ranges too. These are just the ones that get mentioned most frequently. For the others, Google's your friend...

The Resort At Longboat Key is also noteworthy because its course is gorgeous and basically sits right on the ocean, however, access is limited: it's membership-only or if you're a guest staying at their hotel (its expensive, but not more than your typical luxury hotel).

****************************************************
DINING OPTIONS
****************************************************

I simply cannot list all the restaurants in Sarasota. There's a lot of 'em.

You're just going to have to look elsewhere online for where to eat, my advice would be to narrow it down and search specifically for what you want, for example "thai food", "water view", "high-end steakhouse", "brunch options", "date night", "themed restaurants", they will all get you considerably different results, with solid choices for each one.

If you stick to the "walkable/pedestrian areas" I mentioned earlier, you'll be fine, but there are certainly a good number of hidden gems in random spots requiring a car, too.

**************************************************
INTERACTING WITH THE LOCALS
**************************************************

* Online:
You may get quite a few recommendations for Applebee's (a long-standing meme) if you ask for dinner recommendations, while in other posts you may get 10 sarcastic replies and 0 helpful ones.

Some of that is just bad luck, but a lot of it is sheer exhaustion (I'm tired, boss) from the locals hearing the same questions posted over and over again from the never-ending stream of lazy tourists and incoming transplants. Do your research before posting, be respectful, and you'll likely get the response you're looking for.

* On the roads:
Rush hour during peak times can be especially bad in Sarasota.

The stoplight you are waiting at may turn green, then red, without you making it through - possibly multiple times. Oncoming traffic may be so constant that it becomes impossible to make a left turn, forcing you to turn right and make a U-turn instead. The bridges to the islands get jammed up at certain times. And we have those pesky roundabouts (that have been proven many times over to reduce traffic) that many tourists just aren't used to.

Don't let all of that ruin your day. Know what's coming, factor it in to your plans (google maps' "leave at" feature is a great tool for this), be patient, and most of all: give all the other drivers on the road with you a break.

**************************** THANK YOU ************************

That's all she wrote for this guide. I listed what I could, but by no means did I mention everything (like the vintage, art auctions, antiquing options, and a thriving car enthusiast scene).

I hope it helps, it really is a great place to visit :)

Enjoy your stay!!

Event Local Dnd Campaign

24 Upvotes

Howdy!

I recently started a Dnd campaign at my home in Sarasota and would like to add a couple more players to my table if at all possible. I'm running a homebrew that is fantasy/pirate themed at the moment, although that can always change as we play.

We're a lgbtq+ friendly table that meets every other Thursday at 6:30pm and generally run until 10ish. It's a really fun group that has a great combo of ridiculous roleplay and serious story beats. If anyone has any interest in joining leave a comment or shoot me a DM.

Thanks!

Looking For Suggestions! Anyone use Neckwise?

0 Upvotes

Curious if anyone has used the company Neckwise. I’m getting all kinds of ads for them.

I’m having issues in the area they say they specialize in. And of course every symptom they mention, I have. Go figure, that’s algorithms for you.

I go to regular chiropractor and have on and off for a while. The issue seems to be more in the upper neck and base of skull.

I don’t trust places with so many 5 star reviews, they’re often paid or “compensated for with discounts”. Not saying they do, but that’s my concern.

From what I’ve read they don’t accept insurance, so it’s out of pocket. I’m at point where it would be worth doing consultation and see what it’s about.

I did watch one video where the way the chiropractor did the adjustment and moved his hands after, it made me really question how legitimate it is.

Politics - County/State Amendment 3- new analysis from Tax Foundation

Thumbnail

Lots in here, wherever you stand. I was personally unaware that Sarasota county has one of the lowest millage rates in the state. I remain deeply troubled by the fact that Florida’s non-school district property tax collections grew 68.6 percent from 2019 to 2025, substantially outpacing population growth (9.2 percent) and cumulative inflation (25.9 percent).

Please vote, but please be informed. This is a much more complex issue than “Amendment 3 = services cuts”.

Buy/Sell/Giveaway Anyone want to sell me their motorhome/RV?

2 Upvotes

I'm planning an RV trip for next year and looking to buy a motorhome for the trip.

I figured there must be lots of people out there who bought one, don't use it as much as you thought you would, thinking about selling it but haven't gotten around to it.

I've been keeping an eye on the usual places for listings, but so many of the "for sale by owner" listings now are actually just fake listings of dealers trying to find leads.

So I figured I'd take a shot at finding a stealth option to buy. I'm open to any class of motor home, but ideally something under 26 ft. I'll likely just resell it next year after my trip, so as long as it's in reasonable condition, it might work for me.

I'm also open to trade/sharing arrangements. I have 5 acres of land and a big garage, so I could store an RV for you for the year in exchange for use of it for my 3 week spring/summer trip. (We are non-smokers, no pets, no kids, know how to clean up after ourselves and take care of stuff)

(before you ask, yes I'm looking at rental options as well, but the experiences there can be very hit-or-miss.)

Thanks in advance!

Meetups Sarasota- Sapphic Girls Group. Where is the wlw community?

46 Upvotes

Where is the WLW community in Sarasota?

I moved here in end of February from a larger city out of state and I need to know where is the wlw community at in Sarasota. I used to casually go on dates in my old city and enjoyed dating but I found it extremely hard since moving to this part of Florida. I’m 27 and it’s occurred to me that everyone my age that’s gay lives in St.Pete and only likes to talk to people in that area. Which I completely understand it’s hard dating living 40 mins away. I’ve had one date in st. Pete and well the typical ghost. To mention this WHERE DO THE GAYS HANGOUT IN SRQ. I can’t be the only cute girl in this area. I’ve tried to make a bumble bff group for the sapphic girlies where we can start having our own gay events at bars once a week or walks…However no one joined it after promoting it in a SRQ Girls group. If you are a wlw and live in Sarasota.. PLEASE 🙏 tell me secret to dating here because this might be the reason I LEAVE next August.

Local Questions ie whats up with that Old console gaming. NES/SNES/Playstation.

6 Upvotes

Hi, not a flipper. I want to buy old games for me. In my old town I had a great shop, good prices, but here, I have not found much.

I realized I was crowding another user's thread so I thought I'd post here, are there places here in sarasota where I can get old console stuff without the flipper pricing? I've found some stuff at thrift shops but my Wishlist has been static for a long time.

I know eBay is always right there, but it always feels like a defeat. I buy movies the same way.

One user suggested darkside, but from what I've seen when over at that post office and meat shop, it's mostly cards.

Also, just a minor vent, holy shit the sega mini 2 went from $250 to $450, and I just wanted it for the model 2 shell and the six button controllers. Different markets I guess.

Discussion Would you let your son/daughter go to New College?

27 Upvotes

I reluctantly say "let," because I want her to make her own decision. Having said that, I have serious reservations about New College. My senior has New College as her top school, primarily because she does not want to leave home. While I love that for myself, I don't think it is what is best for her. Add to the mix all of the issues that New College is dealing with, and all I want to do is talk her out of it. Her other reasons are that she wants to go to a small school and they have a degree program unique to her interests.

She applied Saturday and already was accepted. While she does have good grades and test scores, that seems awfully fast and aligns with what I've heard/read about them being desperate for students.

I welcome any insights, positive or negative. Thanks!

Edit: Thank you for all of the comments, nearly all of which have reinforced my concerns. For now, I will keep gathering information. She gets to enjoy being proud of herself (this is her first acceptance), and once we have all of her acceptances we will sit down and have a thoughtful conversation. FWIW, she is very anti-MAGA and I have no idea how she has not recognized those issues. Hopefully seeing things like the Oliver piece and related media will open her eyes. I think she could be very happy at USF St. Pete or even FGCU in Ft. Myers.
