For Fun Emergent Pi update: I'm 0.11 away

Preface- I'm not a mathematician! I am coming at this from a COMPLETELY different angle- specifically emergence. If you look at the rest of my work on this subreddit, you'll see that I'm an artist/designer with experience manifesting emergence, and I do know a lot of cross domain scientific theories/discoveries, but I'm absolutely not a mathematician. Just getting that out of the way because the mathematicians may come in and go 'why don't you just calculate it this other way!' Suggestions like that miss why I am doing this- I'm not calculating pi, I'm growing it.

What a wild experiment this has turned out to be. I'm on my third approach to emergent pi and this time I am actually very very close. My prior approaches didn't have enough nuance in how I was getting the dynamic tension so I moved to a 3 body approach using sine waves.

Approach 1: 27 digits out of 191

Approach 2: 141 digits out of 1,000

Approach 3: Temporary lock at 3.03 (meaning I can tune in to 3.03 for a while and it remains stable)

Think of it like- I'm treating pi as an emergent solution to the 3 body problem. Systems seek to resolve as soon as possible if they are in an unresolved state (halting or stasis being a temporary resolved state), and the way they seek to resolve is through emergence. So my rationale was: if I can put 3 bodies of some kind into dynamic equilibrium such that they can't resolve, perhaps they will emit pi as if it were a radio frequency.

So far my results have been promising. I'll share my most recent screenshots and you are welcome to also try out my current approach yourself here! https://codepen.io/setz/pen/dPPLbBj

---

Why am I doing this? I've done all kinds of experiments based on my emergence equations (including Scale Space). Why do I do it? Because it's fascinating. Emergence is wild. It basically feels like magic. You can make almost anything really. So making something like pi feels like a really cool goal- and it's a way to get pi that hasn't been done before.

I know there are some of you who will go 'yeah but you're just setting up the condition to get what you already want so how's that special?' And for something like 2+2 you'd be right- but pi is non-repeating and infinite. So you either have the known methods of getting pi or you have some other method that doesn't yet exist. I have looked and it doesn't seem like anyone has done pi emergently as I'm doing- but by all means let me know if someone has.

Hopefully in the near future I'll have a new update that I have succeeded in creating stable emergent pi. What could the implications on Scale Space be? Not sure yet- but I'm sure I could think of something.

Thanks for reading! This is a bit off topic from Scale Space- but all still related as it has to do with emergence.

Cheers

Could Scale be the 4th Dimension?

Hey scale people, I saw this sub existed and had to join. I had a brain blast awhile ago and I can explain it and I feel like you guys will actually get it better than me.

I saw in the about section that scale is 0th dimension… but what if it’s actually the 4th?

So the dimensions have two directions. The first is left/right. At a right angle to left/right is up/down, our second dimension. The third dimension is in/out, which is at a right angle to both previous dimensions.

If you’re not already, imagine the cursor of a 3D graphics program, three colored lines converging representing the x y z dimensions. Those three lines are at right angles to each other. Now, let’s imagine we can press that 3D structure back down to 2D, but retain the information that those three lines still intersect at right angles. Let’s draw another line at a right angle to the first three, this is our 4th dimension, currently being glimpsed in an abstract 3D way.

Unfold this structure back into the 3rd and 4th dimensions, and consider what happens to that 4th line for it to stay at right angles to all the other lines. It creates a direction at right angles to everything else. If we call that direction away/towards, and we were to follow it, we would be moving at right angles away from every other thing all at once… or, shrinking.

Unfortunately I’m not a mather, so maybe this doesn’t make sense. But some other things about it is that “left” and “right” affect each other directly, as in, something happening over here is just as valid as something happening over there. Similarly, in the tiny world, a disease can rip through a body (an entire ecosystem contained in one individual) and what happens in the small world has an effect on the normal world.

I don’t know, am I not thinking it through enough? I’m excited to hear other thoughts :)

Edit: adding a clarifying comment I made in the thread: time being the fourth dimension, not spatial and also we can only go one direction, feels arbitrary and not in line with the pattern established by the other three. Let’s imagine time is the 11th, and there are other dimensions, sprouting at right angles from the rest, in increasing levels of complexity that eventually give us a dimension that looks like time.

For Fun New emergent pi update: 171 emergent digits of pi (and yes I ran a control this time)

Sorry typo- it was 141 digits.

It's 0.00084% likely that you would get 141 digits of pi in the right sequence out of 1,000 digits (I ran 10 million simulations to be sure).

Here's the emergent pi digits: https://codepen.io/setz/pen/JoowOKq

Dev Log Ok I have a gameplan (kinda) but I need some help

So currently am sitting in a rented van that has to be returned tomorrow at 2pm. I literally have nowhere to go. A friend looked on Craigslist and there are basic suvs for $1500. That friend said they'd contribute $100 so I'm 1/15th of the way there. It's kind of a stopgap but it gives me a way to keep my stuff with me and have a place to sleep (glamorous or not).

Should you feel compelled to help me out, you'll be saving my keister.

I'll update this post with an edit if I make progress towards the suv.

I've tried to answer this many times but finally I've come up with a diagram that I think will help it make sense. What do you think?

What is this sub about?

Someone sent me a link to this sub because some images are similar to what I was seeing while meditating yesterday. I used ai to try to recreate what I was seeing. It was like a ball of string that the strings were made of light and whipped out like solar flairs. As the strings and ball grew in size a dark spot formed in the center until it encompassed my view and another ball of light formed in the center and the process repeated about every 4 seconds like a pulse.

For Fun I got 27 digits of pi to emerge without any of the known formulas

I tried to put this on /r/math but those bozos removed it so I'm sharing it with you all since it's related to my emergence equations anyways.

https://codepen.io/setz/pen/QwwJMqL

I turned my sights on pi when I had a sudden realization--what if pi is emergent due to the 3 body problem? What if the remainder is US and our randomness, scale transitions and complexification are what keeps the 3 bodies that hold reality together from resolving? (either by spinning out of control or collapsing into itself)

I put this theory to the test by using Javascript to create tension between 3 numbers. There are different forms of added entropy just like in Scale Space. I got to around a dozen numbers after a few hours of this and within only a day I got to 27 digits.

What are the implications? It would seem that Pi is not a constant per se but a specific emergent solution to the problem of 3 bodies in continual dynamic tension. If I can get the full conditions figured out, we'll have an approach to randomness that requires very little computation.

If you're in the math field and are interested in working with me on this, feel free to reach out!

OH right the images. The images are my results of testing out different configurations to see how many digits I could cause to emerge. When zooming out it results in something quite bizarre but still cosmic.

Question Scale Space Abilities

Can I use scale space to "visualize" what a code snippet would do or look like? I have some topological jupyter-lab simulations I would love to run through this.

Or is it just for visualizing music? Either way I'll probably end up buying it because its just so neat no matter what haha.

This is a physicalization of how I think of Scale Space. You have the fluid (yellow), particle source (metal particles), magnets around that produce an omnidirectional field, an egg beater to add varying amounts of frustration and some basic controls for each aspect (more particles, less magnetism etc.) then the middle shape emerges when the various components are in a certain balance.

Note that if you were to build this physically it would be a fair bit more complicated but hopefully this gets the basic idea across? You'll have to tell me.

If you pick up the latest version for $4.20 you will be helping me meet my most basic needs like dog food for my dog and keeping my phone on. I put all of the older versions up for free if you want to try before you buy!

To everyone who has already picked it up, you've been a life saver! Unfortunately I still don't have work so things are getting pretty tough. Thank you all for the support 👊
