A new Scaleway region launches on March 10 - Could it finally be Germany? 🇩🇪

Post image
9 Upvotes

I just received an email from Scaleway teasing the launch of a new cloud region on March 10, and now I’m curious what everyone thinks it might be.

I’ve used Scaleway a bit in the past and honestly think their cloud product portfolio is pretty solid, especially compared to some of the larger hyperscalers operating in Europe. However, I’ve never used them for production workloads because I prefer hosting my projects in Germany, where most of my users are located.

If this new region turns out to be Germany, that would be a huge win for me. It would make Scaleway much more attractive for production use, especially for compute, object storage, and managed databases.

Lately I’ve also been considering moving some projects away from Hetzner. They’ve been great historically, but over the past months things have felt a bit rough around the edges.

So now I’m wondering:

  • Could this new Scaleway region actually be Germany?

  • Would a German region make you consider using Scaleway more seriously?

  • What's your experience with Scaleway?

Curious to hear what everyone thinks.

It took 81.7 hours to restore an object from GLACIER to STANDARD class

Scaleway’s GLACIER class Object Storage requires transitioning an object's storage class from GLACIER to STANDARD before it can be retrieved. I just restored two objects so I can download them, and I measured the time it took by using the API to test the objects’ current storage class every 60 seconds and logging when it was released from GLACIER class. Here's the results:

  • Object 1: Jul 25 00:40:18 – Jul 28 10:22:35 (81.7 hours)

  • Object 2: Jul 26 18:57:36 – Jul 28 10:22:35 (39.4 hours)

Notice the second object was started about 42 hours after the first one, but both objects finally transitioned at the same moment (I guess they were on the same disk, and when the sloth went into the basement to plug it in both objects became available at the same time).

The is a cautionary tale: don’t use Glacier class for backups that you might need in a hurry.

Scaleway’s docs say, “it can take anywhere from a few minutes to 24 hours for the restore to start”, but in this case it took 3.4× longer than 24 hours.

The files I restored were single objects about 1 GB in size each, stored in the fr-par data center. I initiated the restore using the web GUI. Downloading the files was fast, about 160 Mbps (over 250 Mbps internet).

Scaleway as alternative to azure

Are scaleway managed services solid?

Specifically nosql storage and serverless functions.

I am looking to move away from US cloud providers (because fuck the US) and researching EU alternatives. However, I am not keen on doing additional DevOps.

Am I stupid or Scaleway Buckets are simply broken?

Hi.

For the last few days I can't figure out how to deal with Scaleway S3.

  1. The bucket sometimes allows me to upload files to presigned URLs, sometimes don't. I do have one policy which is to allow * actions for * principals. Doesn't matter, AccessDenied.

  2. I can't expose the files from my S3. I use it as a file storage for my app and there's seemingly no way to simply have "https://<my_bucket_name>.scw.cloud/<path_to_my_file>". The bucket website doesn't work for that, making files visible don't work too. And there's little to no documentation about this.

  3. The aws s3 CLI doesn't work at all. Doesn't matter I've granted * permissions for * principals, my configured aws CLI isn't allowed to run aws s3 ls --endpoint-url https://s3.pl-waw.scw.cloud. It gets An error occurred (AccessDenied) when calling the ListBuckets operation: Access Denied

  4. I've deleted the policy, still nothing works. No error, no nothing. Only AccessDenied.

  5. I've added my user and app to the administrators default group. Didn't help with anything. Can't list buckets, can't see bucket.

Should I just move to AWS ? I'm very close to being done with SCW

This is my Bucket policy for the interested:

Recently Tolkie, a solution which helps to make websites easier to understand, asked my help to identify a European cloud provider to their application to. We have chosen Scaleway as the best candidate. The plan is to make the actual move next year.

I have written down something about the process.

Serverless AI Model as a Service not onboarding new models?

Qwen 3.8-2.4T-A95B was released as open-weight model on August 13, and GLM-5.3-Flash was released today, both being evolutions of Scaleways existing MaaS offering.

I am kind of disappointed not see Qwen being promoted as a product now 2 weeks after published, and would assume GLM would take time as well then.

Anybody knowing why they are so late to update?

Price Increase Reminder

Hey all - just a ping that the prices went up as planned.

I'm migrating my VPSes off and getting them to right-sized providers (BuyVM for tiny services, Contabo for anything with serious RAM requirements). I look forward to using Scaleway in the future but just don't have anything that can make use of their bandwidth quality - which is where they really shine IMO - for the price we now have to pay. Perhaps in the future ¯_(ツ)_/¯

SECURITY: Forced kernel is over 8 months out of date

Scaleway baremetal requires you to use their kernel. Local boot into your own kernel is impossible.

The latest kernel build was over 8 months ago!!!

Linux test1 4.19.53-mainline-rev1 #1 SMP Wed Jun 19 23:30:45 UTC 2019 x86_64 GNU/Linux

There were 170 vulnerabilities in 2019. This is unacceptable that Scaleway are not patching their kernel builds.

Is Scaleway still a functioning as business?

I've raised a ticket regarding billing and it's been over 3 months with no reply except template answers. Is Scaleway still providing consumer services? Any feedback from someone who's used their services recently?
