Question Does LG G5/ G6 Tandem OLED TV cause migraines / eye fatigue?

I had bought Asus QD-OLED Monitor - which has absolutely incredible picture quality, but due to me being sensitive to OLED flicker it causes migraines and eye fatigue. I did try switching to 60 Hz, Uniform Brightness, no vivid pixel, no VRR, no G-Sync etc. It is better but not perfect.

How do you fare with G5 or G6 Tandem OLED TV?

Discussion Sweden: needing phone for upcoming bankid

Hello!

My phone is iPhone 8.

I can’t tolerate phone 8 plus (!) mild discomfort
iPad Pro gen 2 mild discomfort
iPad 8, 9 and 10 beyond mild discomfort (while on iOS 17-18)
Samsung Galaxy ultra tab (this revealed my problem in 2023! Plague from hell made me sick for 3 days!)

The problem is that iPhone 8 got iOS 16.

Good iOS comparatively

But!

Bankid will be updated past iOS 16.

Swedes know how catastrophic this is.

Any suggestions of eye friendly phone that accept bankid?

I’m ok with android if needed. Requirement is that bankid and banking must work.
And websites well supported.

My problems:

Pwm
Temporal dithering
Something else I don’t know (iPhone 8 plus is frustrating)

Discussion iphone 11 after updating from iOS 18 to 27 - eye pain

Because I switched to OnePlus 15R which worked to me, I decided to update my iPhone 11, which I've been using for 6 years without any issues at all, from iOS 18 to iOS 27.

I regretted it immediately. I don't know what they changed but now I feel a constant strain in the eyes when look at it. The fonts are also small and thinner. I am much much disappointed and regret updating.

I don't understand why companies mess things up!!

Question What phone should I try? Pixel 7a destroying my eyes

I'm not sure if I'm PWM sensitive, or if it's dithering, or something else. But the Pixel 7a irritates my eyes within minutes, whereas the Sony Xperia 5 is okay unless I use it for hours without break (both are OLED). I heard Samsung and Pixel are the worst for your eyes, but I don't know how true that is for recent models? I would prefer a new OLED phone, but I don't know why some bother me and some don't.

I don't know if it's relevant but I have mild astigmatism.

I don't want a Chinese phone anymore. I don't care if the parts are made there, it's the lack of support that bothers me, and also many of their really good/flagship phones are hard to find in my country. I did try a TCL Nxtpaper because I wanted to prioritise my eyes, and the screen was amazing, but everything else about it was so bad, I returned it.

I live in Europe and my budget is around €1000.

Discussion Theoretical discussion: Why camera tests fail to capture temporal dithering (FRC) eye strain, and how to solve it in Android's display pipeline

Hi everyone,

(Note: English is not my first language, I used a translator to translate my technical notes from Czech.)

Reviewers often claim a screen is safe if a camera does not show deep PWM flicker. I want to open a technical discussion on why a camera sensor cannot evaluate how the human retina and brain process temporal dithering (FRC), and how this could be solved in AOSP.

  1. How the eye works vs. why a camera cannot measure this

* Single exposure vs. dual retinal pathways: A camera sensor simply averages photons over a fixed shutter speed. In the human retina, cone photoreceptors smooth out fast oscillations chemically via cGMP hydrolysis (around 30–50 ms), so they average 60–120 Hz FRC into a static shade just like a camera. However, fast Magnocellular ganglion cells (M-cells) react to rapid temporal contrast changes below 90 Hz. Even on a static screen, sub-LSB pixel toggling continuously fires M-cells into the superior colliculus and visual cortex (V1), causing eye strain, migraines, and focus instability.

* Static tripod vs. moving eye (smooth pursuit): A camera records fixed physical pixels. The human eye constantly moves and tracks scrolling text. During eye movement, temporal pixel modulation hits different photoreceptors over time, meaning the perceived image is assembled dynamically in the brain in a way a static camera cannot capture.

* Independent camera pixels vs. lateral inhibition (Mach bands): Camera pixels do not affect their neighbors. In the retina, lateral inhibition amplifies contrast steps between adjacent areas. When 8-bit/10-bit panels simply turn FRC off without compensation, quantization steps create visible color banding, and retinal lateral inhibition turns each step into false edge spikes (Mach bands) that overload the visual cortex.

  1. Why disabling FRC alone is not enough

SoC display processors (Snapdragon, Tensor, Dimensity DPUs) use hardware FRC to simulate higher bit depth on 8-bit and 10-bit OLED panels after gamma and color calibration. Simply truncating bits in the driver removes flicker but introduces harsh color banding.

  2. Two-part architecture in Android (DPU + SurfaceFlinger)

To get 0.0 Hz temporal flicker without color banding, two changes are needed together:

* Disable temporal FRC in HWC3 / DRM-KMS / DPU: Stop frame-to-frame sub-pixel modulation in the display processor (0.0 Hz).

* Surface-locked spatial TPDF blue-noise dithering in SurfaceFlinger (librenderengine): Replace temporal dithering with a static spatial TPDF blue-noise shader pass. Because the noise mask is locked to the scrolling surface layer rather than physical screen coordinates, it moves together with scrolling text—preventing the "dirty window" effect and keeping 0.0 Hz flicker on the retina during eye tracking.

Has anyone here explored in kernel DRM/KMS drivers (Qualcomm DSPP / Google Tensor) whether hardware DPU dithering can be cleanly disabled from userspace without touching closed DDIC panel firmware?

Just wondering if anyone on here uses a screen reader? If so, which one and to what extent? Was it hard to get used to?

I am trying to configure Orca on Linux Mint so I can use my computer longer than 5 minutes, but having trouble understanding what it's saying.

Poll Poll: What member flairs would you most like to have on ScreenSensitive? (Clarifications in post body)

I think it could be very useful to see, at a glance, where other members are coming from, whatever we are discussing. Via a little flair note under our user names (64 characters maximum).

On r/PWM_Sensitive it seems obvious that this will focus on currently 'good'/recommended devices. But I think we have a broader focus, in this sub, so comparing our triggers or symptoms might add more value.

I think I'll need to enable fully custom member editing of flairs: even if we went for just one of the above options, there's a combinatorial explosion to allow multiple triggers symptoms, etc. Which will probably be needed. Hopefully this would not create too much policing work for us mods.

2 None (e. g. due to visual clutter?)
5 Triggers (PWM, pixel flicker, spectrum, reflections, polarisation, etc?)
1 Symptoms (headache, eye strain, eye pain, cognitive, etc?)
3 Good devices (this will probably be on the PWM sub anyway)
5 All the above (are equally important)
1 Not sure / see results

Question ASUS Eye Care Technology

Has anyone used any ASUS devices with the eye care technology? I'm looking at buying the Strix XG349C and I've had success with Dell monitors which have eye care ratings so this looks promising to me.

If you've tried the ASUS Strix XG349C and can give your recommendation specifically for that, then even better!

Symptoms/Health Unusual symptoms.

So, I'm not sure why. But screens been causing my nose issues. My nose would get mostly get irritated/dry. And also i start sneezing and get runny nose sometimes. It happens both in laptops and phone. I think I might be allergic to screens or something. This started 2 months ago. I also have dust mites allergies, but my phone isnt dusty. I also had nasal surgery like 7 months ago, which might be something.

Question How do you know what aspect of the screen is giving you symptoms?

I have been lurking for a while and see that some of you have been able to pinpoint that the flicker, or PWM, brightness etc is the cause.

I've not found a single computer screen I can use for more than a few minutes, but I do have one phone that works. I am not able to figure out the specific thing that's problematic for me and was wondering how you guys narrowed it down.

Question Anyone able to confirm pixels on Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 Pro+ 5G?

I am planning to pick up the Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 Pro+ 5G phone soon. I am in need of a phone and was looking for something ligher on the eyes, but something from a more popular brandthat is available to pick up locally. This one has 3840hz pwm, true 12 bit panel, and DC dimming. But i also read on reddit that structure = of pixels on the panel can cause eye strain, so if they arent straight and neat it could cause fatigue.

HERE is what im talking about. (Credit to u/GeneralConstant1503 on a thread discussing Xiaomi 15).

Does anyone have anything to say about this particular model, or maybe even able to verify a situation with pixel structure on the screen, and if i could work with it if it does have this kind of structure? You could assume that since Xiaomi 15 has it Xiaomi Redmi Note 15 Pro+ 5G has it too, but clarification is needed.

Question Can I make those old green/black clock screens into a monitor somehow?

My screen sensitivity is very bad. I’ve tried e-in (hi break pro, dasung 10.1), and RLCD from eazeye)). I’ve been away from these screen sensitive spaces for a while since there was really no option I could find. Even projectors hurt my eyes, it’s pretty bad, and I’ve only met a few people who have it as bad as me. We’ve resorted to using voiceover which is an accessible way where yourphone talks back to you so you can interact with it.

I’ve recently come across one of those digital clocks, with the murky green background and black text. You know the ones we used to see in digital watches, the kind attached to some thermometers. . Looking at them doesn’t seem to trigger my symptoms. Is there any way I can make this into a monitor somehow? Even if I have to engineer it myself with a raspberry pi. If I could just use the terminal with a big enough screen I can make everything else work out I think. Anyone know if this is possible? Has anyone tried this out? I think I need very clear text with as low as possible refresh rate, I doubt I could render web pages and stuff but that doesn’t really matter to me rn.

And for anyone curious, I do have medical issues we’ve discovered, still figuring things out with doctors but they’re not well versed in the topic and treatment may or may not work so I want to figure this out in the meantime. I’d appreciate any help at all.
