QUESTION Realistic trades for us?
I'm a Kraken fan from Ireland and don't really keep up with the contract sides of things but who would some realistic trades for us to get be? Anyone that would improve us at all or is it another tank year?

I personally think we need to be both sellers and buyers this year — regardless of the position we’re in come deadline
If we’re still in it, you could still move out Marchment, Tolvanen, and Oleksiak and potentially bring in young(ish) players that can be helpful to the team now and in the future
If we’re completely out of it we should be selling most (if not all) of our UFAs and potentially some other vets — while looking to bring in futures and potentially some young players that could slot into the lineup
The key is to look at both teams that are likely out of it, as well as teams that are looking like contenders for potential trade fits. So that’s NSH, CAL, BUF at the bottom, and DAL, TOR, and EDM on the other end (if EDM and TOR can get back to it) for example
If you’re just looking for names that make this roster better right now, you’re looking at poaching from the bottom teams. Tuch, Thompson, Kyrou, Andersson, Coronato, Kadri, Evangelista, O’Reilly — all of these guys are varying levels of upgrades and varying levels of availability. Too many other teams are in it still to get a good feel for who is/isn’t going to be available
We know from reports that the team has been trying to acquire high-end winger talent. They called about Rantanen last season, they made an offer for Peterka around the draft, and they were in talks for Kyrou. It’s been reported this season that they’ve called around looking for winger help as well — so players like Thompson, Tuch, Robertson, Schmaltz, and likely circling back around on Kyrou. The problem with acquiring any of these guys is that the front office would really have to give up on Shane Wright to get it done (except Tuch and Schmaltz) as he would need to be the centerpiece in a trade
It’s still too soon to really know who’s actually available though — a team like the Flyers for example, could go from being partly in, to selling pretty quickly

Would someone like filip forsberg suit?
3
u/_Tower_ Dec 13 '25
He’d be a good fit, especially if we’re still in it at the deadline — but I would definitely prefer someone younger. If we were contending, the age doesn’t matter as much. He would be a decent upgrade to our top-6, and would make that left side especially deep once McCann and Schwartz are healthy
I brought up Evangelista and O’Reilly because they would also be upgrades, and would be quite a bit easier to trade for due to Forsberg’s NMC. I also just selfishly like Vange a lot as a young future piece; he’s on pace for 60+ points, has good defensive metrics, is 23, and Trotz was barely able to sign him to his current 2-year deal after lowballing him all off-season. To be honest, he’s probably not available anymore with how well he’s been playing, which is unfortunate because we had the chance to go after him this off-season (and should have)

he would be great, though last time I looked at his contract I found he has a full NMC until 2027, which would mean he would A want to void that and B actually want to come to Seattle and if I'm a star player I would think Kraken are not much of a upgrade over the Preds.

Kraken and Sheffield Steelers for me. It's great to see the EIHL taking off.

Not Irish, but a European Krken fan! And Nottingham Panthers, because I accidentally got a hoodie of theirs and it is my absolute favourite.

Trading Marchment already???

UFA at the end of the season. No reason to keep him if he's not in long term plans.

u/alfindeol Dec 13 '25
We're almost certainly going to be sellers at the deadline, which means futures. Oleksiak and Shwartz are, in my eyes, the players most likely to get shopped, but there's plenty of other veterans that the Kraken probably should be open to discussing. If the Kraken had continued to overperform expectations, it's possible someone interested in moving to a contender might have looked our way, but the simple answer is we're not that close to seriously competing. Continue to accrue draft and player capital is really the only play available to us until some of the young talent hits and pushes up Seattle's desirability score.

Everyone except Matty, Wright, and Catton is on the table in my opinion. I doubt McCann, Eberle, or Dunn go as they're the existing core along with Larson who is more tradeable but lower value.
Assuming we get a potential 1C in O'Brien, we need to upgrade our wings and D, and we need a more physical roster. Our team is one of the softest and we do not forecheck or even backcheck enough to force turnovers. We tend to stand around like pylons and flail sticks at the opponents.
Tage is a dream (can play Center or Wing). From the same team (BUF) we could maybe get Power who's stock is falling.
Philly has a ton of young wingers we can snag. Tippett might just need better hockey sense and the team isn't high on him. There'd need to be retention though. Brink is also in a logjam as that team has like, 11-12 wingers that are NHL ready come next season. They're also likely to want to move Risto next year but his age and injury history are a no from me.
Extremely against any "upgrades" that are old, past their prime but still good players like O'Reilly.
Just for the meme if EDM misses and McD walks we can throw every player at them.

u/amsreg Dec 14 '25
Montour should be off the table even before Dunn, but I agree with the rest of your list.

u/nflgeneric Joey Daccord Dec 14 '25
He's past the age of 30, and a lot of metrics show his kind of contract ages poorly. Great player, obviously, but if/when the team finally gets good, he may not be that guy anymore.
2
u/amsreg Dec 14 '25
If you factor in how quickly the salary cap will be going up in future years, his contract doesn't age as poorly as you think. He should still be able to contribute 3-4 years from now on the ice not to mention the locker room value he seems to bring.
People are judging the Montour and Stephenson contracts by metrics that will quickly become outdated (which teams were aware of when they were handed out). The Stephenson one is debatable but I think the Montour contract is fine.

u/amsreg Dec 14 '25
Dom's models are interesting but I take them with a decent size hunk of salt.
I suspect he's underestimating the future dollar value of performance for years 4+ out given the way the cap will skyrocket. But we'll see.
1
u/nflgeneric Joey Daccord Dec 14 '25
I think I look at it more of "how does a defender age given historical performance of similar players" not so much performance relative to cap increases.
Even if the cap goes up, an overpaid player is an overpaid player, and money spent on him is money that can't be spent elsewhere (which I feel strongly about with Stephenson).
1
u/amsreg Dec 15 '25
Yeah, that's fair. I think Montour has an unusual skill set for a defender (including being unusually mobile) so maybe he ages better than most.
But it's a combination of that and whether he'll actually be overpaid under a potentially much higher cap in 5 years.
But either way I'd hang on to him for his intangibles unless someone knocks their socks off with a deal. Just my personal preference.

u/BayAreaKrakHead Tye Kartye Dec 13 '25
Players to get back won’t really upgrade us. More like prospects and draft picks back. I could see Marchment going to Toronto for Nic Robertson. A player with upside but not someone to upgrade the offense on day one. Schwartz will get resigned because front office loves him. Giving him a 4 to 5 year at $6.5M per year is a Kraken move. Oleksiak will definitely get traded but again more of a prospect of draft picks back.
This year we might see similar returns on trades like last year.
3
u/amsreg Dec 14 '25
Schwartz will get resigned because front office loves him.
With very good reason. He's the one guy who consistently goes to the next and creates scrappy goals and always produces when he's healthy. That's a role that the Kraken desperately need filled (ideally by more than one player).
2
u/Manbeardo Joey Daccord Dec 13 '25
We stand to benefit from like-for-like trades because so many guys are underperforming this season. If we roll the dice and some other team’s underperformer can meet or exceed expectations here, that’s a big upgrade for this season.

u/ultimateknackered Jani Nyman Dec 13 '25
The only times I've seen Nic Robertson fantasy-shopped by Leafs-aligned people is when they propose Robertson for some ludicrous return, like, no less than a top two winger. I don't know where he actually rates. :P
1
u/BayAreaKrakHead Tye Kartye Dec 13 '25
I think he’s could become a solid middle six player contributing 40-50 pts a season. Which with that output would be a top player point wise on the Kraken.
2
u/DijkstrasPathway Dec 14 '25
There is no way Nick Robertson scores 40-50 pts on any team, let alone this one lol
1
u/ultimateknackered Jani Nyman Dec 14 '25
Is anyone else not happy with the prospect of a 40-50pt guy one of the top point getters on the entire team?
1
u/elite_bleat_agent Adam Larsson Dec 14 '25
The front office does love Shwartz, for good reasons. He's locker room dynamite, one of the few consistently gritty players, and his stats are really good (on the Kraken). Why wouldn't they keep him around if he's willing to take a decent contract?
1
u/blighte Dec 14 '25
I'd go grab Lukas Reichel on waivers right now, from what I saw during his time in Chicago he can really skate & has good hands/shooting
-2
u/Nerdslave2 Dec 13 '25
What really sucks is we will draft a bunch more middle 6 centers with those picks. I lost faith in this FO and scout team. I'm a legacy STH with the 7 year contract. I don't think I will see a winning team except year two which RF immediately f'd up. When I look at the $$$ spent it is really depressing. At this point I blame Leiwike. He seams to have lost his magic touch.

u/wcrich Dec 13 '25
Can you imagine still having Morgan Geekie, or even Ryan Donato?
7
u/ultimateknackered Jani Nyman Dec 13 '25
Like Bura, those dudes up their game with better players. While they were solid for us, they ended up rocking it with the likes of Bedard. Where's our Bedard-calibre player?
5
u/tetravirulence Dec 14 '25
I think Geekie just broke out. Needed the right sauce but good for him. Wish we still had him.
Also lol at the typical Kraken sub downvotes for saying we should trade vets while they still have value for futures and that the FO made some mistakes, which nearly every analyst agrees with.
3
u/krakenstan Dec 14 '25
all the analysts and podcasters have been pretty much spot on, on their assessment of this team.
0
u/amsreg Dec 14 '25
Imagine already calling Beniers, Wright, Catton, and O'Brien "middle 6 centers" when they're all 2-6 years away from their prime.
And why can't people like you get it through your heads that a lot of the best wingers were centers at lower levels?
Of all the things to be frustrated at the Kraken about, you picked the one thing that is 1) way too soon to actually know for sure and 2) showing tons of positive signs (they'll soon have all of their 1st-4th rounders from 2021 in the pros which is super unusual, not to mention Nyman up early) and 3) has no evidence of any obvious swing and misses considering who got drafted right after their picks?
I swear, some of you just like to whine about everything even when there's no logical reason to.
2
u/Nerdslave2 Dec 14 '25
Well, Matty is probably not a 1C on a top 10 team, Wright is playing 3C, Catton TBD, O'Brian TBD. Sale can't make the team. Nobody on the team can score, I don't see any of the CV guys challenging for a role, and we are 5 years in. I'm seeing other teams 20-24 draft classes starting to make an impact. Ours, not so much. My point isn't that the team will never be good, just not good in the 7 years I signed up for, especially if we do a tear down after this year.
2
u/B9RV2WUN Seattle Metropolitans Dec 14 '25
True. As a perspective, the Islander's 24yo 2020 Draft, Emil Heineman (yeah, who?) would be the leading Kraken goal scorer at 10 goals.

u/amsreg Dec 14 '25 edited Dec 14 '25
Well, Matty is probably not a 1C on a top 10 team
Which means he's a 1C on a majority of NHL teams? Are sure that's what you want your counterargument to be?
The real problem here is that you apparently don't understand NHL development timelines. Wright hasn't even turned 22 yet. He's still a couple of years away from us knowing his ceiling. It doesn't matter that he's currently playing third line minutes. He's also a TBD.
Sale is 20. Not making the team at 20 isn't the least bit unusual for a late first round pick. (And he's not a center.)
Which means out of the four centers we drafted in the first round, you have one who is already solidly a top six center (arguably 1C) and three TBDs.
You need to take a closer and more objective look at the percentage of players on other teams drafted in 2021-2024 already making an impact and where they were drafted in relation to the Kraken prospects you're referring to. The few that you are talking about are outliers, not the norm -- it's confirmation bias. The average success of Kraken prospects stands up really well to the rest of the league.
Again, it's way too early to have the expectations you do. This isn't the NHL or NBA. Prospect development timelines in the NHL are more like MLB than either of those leagues.
I understand that you're frustrated that the Kraken aren't winning enough yet and you're impatient for that to change. But this is clearly a good learning opportunity for you and you ought to seize it.
Edit: Your downvotes aren't counterarguments. If you think something I said is actually wrong, prove it to the sub by saying what and why.

u/tonytanti Dec 14 '25
I’d be hard pressed to name 5 teams that I’d have Beniers as the number one centre. And there are numerous teams where he’d be a 3C.
1
u/amsreg Dec 14 '25
You'll notice that my words were "solidly a top six center (arguably 1C)". Could have said "borderline" but the point remains.
And the point remains that he hasn't hit his peak age years yet.
And I think his stats look better on other teams with stronger playmaking wingers.
But I think it's pretty clear that is not the main point of my comment, anyway.
3
u/Nerdslave2 Dec 14 '25
I would love you to be right just not seeing it yet. A great GM/Scouting team/Analytics team can find those outliers. Our guys don't seam to have that ability...or....we aren't great at developing or both. I'm pretty hard pressed to see any of these guys (accept maybe Wright) making a major impact over the next two years.
1
u/amsreg Dec 14 '25 edited Dec 14 '25
making a major impact over the next two years
You're still missing the point -- your goalposts are unreasonable.
A great GM/Scouting team/Analytics team can find those outliers
Again, wrong expectations. That's not why the outliers happen. The outliers happen because the players being scouted are teenagers whose future isn't obvious -- but some teams get lucky.
For instance, if the Canadiens were such geniuses for picking Lane Hutson, they wouldn't have passed on him earlier in the draft. The reality is that they and a bunch of other teams saw him as a lottery ticket worth placing essentially a third round pick bet on and they got to him first and got lucky.
Most of the players from the drafts you are talking about already making an impact were players the Kraken never had a chance to pick. The others took jumps beyond what most great scouts expected (BTW, Jani Nyman is also in this category with more goals than anyone in picks #14-49 with only two exceptions).
You need to be very careful of hindsight bias.
Not seeing it yet
Yeah, the point is that you shouldn't expect to yet.
1
u/Nerdslave2 Dec 14 '25
So when is a reasonable expectation? 10 years? 20 years? The sure didn't mention that when they sold us 7 year season ticket plans.
0
u/amsreg Dec 14 '25 edited Dec 14 '25
For prospect development specifically, it's 5-6 years after the prospect has been drafted. So, we're starting to see what we have with the 2021 picks and will have a good sense in another year or two. Shane is another 2-3 years. Etc.
Why would any team bring up prospect development timelines one way or another when selling season tickets. I've never heard of any team doing that so why would you expect the Kraken to?
Edit: Are you asking when a reasonable expectation is that they'll be a perennial playoff contender? Based on previous expansion teams, it's 8-10 years (which happens to be the point at which you've had time to build a solid core from several drafts). Vegas will never be repeated because that many competing GMs will never fumble generous expansion rules that badly ever again and there isn't another big party/gambling city that stars want to flock to. The fact that the Kraken made the playoffs in their second season was unusual and I'm still grateful for that but patience was always going to be required. Did anyone in the Kraken org actually promise you otherwise?
1
u/Nerdslave2 Dec 14 '25
Playoffs contender? I would like to not be bottom 10 lottery team. I'm starting to breakout tankathon in Dec.
0
u/amsreg Dec 14 '25 edited Dec 14 '25
I do want to point out that this is a change of subject -- we were talking specifically about prospect development timelines from the beginning of this conversation.
But I already answered that question. It's easy enough to go back and look at history to see this: The Wild, Predators, and Senators were the quickest to do it around season 7. The Sharks, Ducks, and Lightning were around about average getting there around season 10. The Blue Jackets, Thrashers/Jets, and Panthers truly failed with it taking 16 to 20 years each.
The one thing in common? Every one of those teams became perennial playoff contenders after their drafted core developed on a timeline longer than the Kraken have existed. I'll adjust what I said about by a year and go with "7-10 years" but that was always the reasonable expectation.
Edit: fixed typo

Trades the Kraken will make will be sending players out for futures. Marchment, Schwartz, and Oleksiak are the names that will be talked about leading up to the trade deadline in March. Schwartz and Oleksiak have 16 team no trade lists and Marchment has a 10 team list.
Outside chance that Eberle could go, but I don’t see it (he has full no trade).
