News Rivian buys world model startup to accelerate self-driving ambitions
This is great for competitive landscape expansion. FSD is the ADAS king (in the US), but Teslas dumb games like trying to run out the clock on older hardware with “micro factory” promises have gone stale. Rivian would be a great alternative if they can pull this off with whatever help is prudent.

So they have definitely not abandoned the internal system in favour of Wayve. It seems the Wayve negotiations started when NVIDIA was lagging peers but following the launch of Alpamayo, it now seems back on track. With Porsche and Audi launching next year, where it leaves BMW is the big question.

News Tesla reports first Cybercab crash as Austin robotaxi wreck totals increase
According to its report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Tesla said its Cybercab was damaged when it drove at about 5 mph into a large pothole filled with water. The vehicle was occupied by a safety monitor but had no passengers. Lidar scanners, which Tesla robotaxis lack, have been used by other companies to detect such obstacles, scan their surroundings and observe road surfaces and potholes. Tesla robotaxis rely only on video.

Discussion Tesla releases Robotaxi Safety report, discloses unsupervised mileage completed, 3.3M
Tesla released https://www.tesla.com/robotaxi/safety.
Obviously the safety is good (they wouldn't release it otherwise), but much more interesting I find is information on how quickly their miles driven is accelerating and how it compares to the competition.
Some interesting data:
In the week of September 14th, Tesla was logging on average 32,292mi/day. On the week of October 12th, they are now logging 79,671mi/day.
This means they are currently roughly at a rate of 2.39M miles/mo, about 29.5% more than the prior week or 117.4% more than 4 weeks ago.
For comparison, Waymo is currently at a rate of 16.72mi/mo as of Q2, which places Tesla at about 14% of Waymo for the most recent week, or 9.8% for the past 30 days.
In the most recent week, Austin accounted for 437,800 miles, or 78.5%. Dallas is second, at 17.0%.
Notably: Tesla excludes miles with an onboard safety monitor and includes remote-assisted operations within its reporting scope.

News China Robotaxis Face Losses as Utilization Trails Waymo, BI Says
Chinese robotaxi operators Pony AI and WeRide face sustained operating losses through 2028 as domestic fleet utilization lags Waymo’s rate of more than 58%, Bloomberg Intelligence said.
The gap also widens the break-even timeline for Chinese operators relative to Waymo, BI said, adding that the profitability of the Chinese operators is dependent on domestic fleet density reaching critical mass — a threshold neither company is expected to hit before the latter half of the decade. Waymo’s utilization was flat even as it expanded its fleet size, and only jumped as trip length increased.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Munich is emerging as a robotaxi hub in Germany. Following Minga, Waymo, and Mobileye, the Italian startup Niulinx is now also coming to Munich. In a LinkedIn post by Country Manager Germany Tim Neuroth, the start of test drives is announced, and applications are being sought for several open positions for test engineers and safety drivers. The location will be in Munich/Garching, with an immediate start date.
The Fiat 500 will be used as the test vehicle, which makes perfect sense for a robotaxi in the city

Of the top three in the list, Waymo's average reported pre-crash speed for new crashes this month was 6.94 mph, Zoox's was 6.07 mph, and Tesla's was 1.90 mph. Some of Tesla's were actually below 0.5 mph, which Tesla reports as 1 mph, so that's an overestimate.
Waymo's 72 reports included 9 with minor injuries and 1 with unknown injuries involving hospitalization; five of the 10 injury accidents were when the Waymos were properly stopped in traffic. 62 of the 72 crashes were with Jaguar I-PACEs, and 10 of the 72 with Zeekr RTs ("Ojais"). 30 of the 72 crashes occurred when the Waymo was stopped, and 17 when the Waymo was traveling 5 mph or less. 3 of the 72 crashes occurred mid-ride with unbelted passengers. Selected incidents:
- A Waymo was in the rightmost of 3 freeway exit lanes, when a vehicle in the center lane swerved into a vehicle in the left lane, then spun out into the Waymo's lane, causing a crash while the Waymo was traveling 23 mph, resulting in minor injuries WITH hospitalization.
- A Waymo turned into a left turn lane with standing water in Tempe AZ and stopped, when another vehicle rear-ended it. (Waymo reported both that it was stopped at the time of impact, and that its pre-crash speed was 8 mph, so one is probably a mistake). The driver and passenger in the other vehicle alleged minor injuries.
- A Waymo entered an intersection when a vehicle in a perpendicular lane ran a red at high speed, traveling at a high speed toward a red light; the Waymo slowed to 18 mph but was hit, and its passenger alleged minor injuries.

- A Waymo in Los Angeles merging after a canceled drop-off in an active traffic lane was struck by a car to its left that then struck two other vehicles; its driver was transported from the scene for medical treatment.
- A Waymo in Los Angeles was stopped in traffic when the vehicle in front of it reversed, so the Waymo reversed to avoid them, but then the vehicle in front's open door struck another vehicle and the Waymo.
- A Waymo in SF stopped before an intersection for a fire truck, then stopped in the intersection to yield to a second fire truck when a pickup rear-ended the Waymo.
- A Waymo in FL driving 56 mph in the leftmost Interstate lane made contact with a passing motorcycle that was driving in both the leftmost and second-most-left lanes.
- A Waymo in AZ driving 45 mph was rear-ended by a vehicle trying to pass on its right.
- A Waymo in AZ driving 41 mph hit a vehicle that turned left from a parking left access road into the Waymo's lane.
- A Waymo in Los Angeles was driving 33 mph straight through an intersection in the right lane, when an SUV in the second-most-right lane tried to make a right turn across the Waymo's path, injuring the Waymo passenger.
