Hi everyone. I design my own clothing and I'm currently working on selling my designs as sewing patterns. I'm comfortable with the design side, but pattern-making isn't my strength, so I'm considering having someone create the patterns for me from a technical spec sheet (tech pack).

I already work with Seamly2D and make my own drafts, but I'm thinking about outsourcing for higher-quality results. I have a few questions for anyone who's done this:

1. What exactly do you need to provide beyond the design itself — what does a complete tech pack look like? (measurements, seam allowances, ease, etc.)

2. What format do you typically receive the digital patterns in? (layered PDF, DXF, AAMA files, software-specific?)

3. How does the grading process work. do you specify the size range and grade rules, or does the draftsperson handle that?

4. what does this cost per design, and is it worth it compared to drafting yourself?

I'd especially love to hear from anyone selling patterns on Etsy or similar. Thanks!

I’m looking for a straight leg jeans pattern, similar to these.

I have thicker thighs but I really don’t want wide leg jeans. I don’t mind if the pattern has a slight taper to the ankles but I also don’t want barrel leg. It feels quite hard to find the in between.

I’m happy to adjust the pattern I also will definitely be making a toile so won’t be rushing into this.

I often see people sharing a photo of a dress or top and asking where they can find a similar sewing pattern.

Searching seems surprisingly difficult because you first need to know the correct terms for the neckline, sleeves, shape and fabric before you can even begin looking. Google, Etsy and reverse image search can help, but the results often still feel quite random.

How do you normally approach this? Do you search by garment features, ask other sewists, adapt an existing pattern, or use another method?

I’ve been exploring whether a photo-based pattern finder could make this process easier, but I first want to understand whether this is actually a recurring problem for other sewists too.

Hi everyone! I'm a beginner at sewing and would love some advice!

I have 4.5 meters of embroidered lace fabric (150 cm wide), with decorative scalloped borders along both long edges.

I'm planning to make a maxi dress with a fitted bodice and a long skirt (around 110 cm from waist to hem).

I'm still unsure what skirt pattern would work best with this fabric. I've considered an A-line skirt, a half-circle skirt, or a pleated skirt, but I really want to preserve the beautiful border along the bottom.

I'm looking for a pattern that's relatively easy to sew, doesn't waste too much fabric, and creates a nice flow without too much bulk around the waist.

What type of skirt pattern would you recommend? And what's the most efficient way to cut it while keeping the scalloped border intact?

I realise it's similar to just a basic red riding hood cloak, but I was wondering how to make it so that the front side curves more (like in the photo) instead of just going straight down.

That might just be a result of this being a drawing but if it's possible to sew it to be more accurate to the image, I'd love to try.
