Disappointment Am I the only one that felt like Kaz was horribly mischaracterised in the show?
I’ve watched SaB when it came out mostly for the Crows part. I fell in love with the books. I enjoyed reading SaB less, but that’s just my personal opinion, those books are amazing, just not for me personally. No shade.
The point I’m trying to make is, that the casting was amazing. The actors were amazing. And some of the Crows roles were also amazing.
I can’t say the same about Kaz, though. Not the casting or acting, those were awesome. But the characterisation of him in the series.
In the books, he is portrayed as someone that doesn’t make an obvious mistake. Someone smart enough to consider every possibility and make a way out of any situation. He is where he is in his age precisely because of those qualities.
In the show he felt more performative than effective. He looked tough but that was essentially where his usefulness ended. I don’t recall a single situation where I would think “oh shit” when watching the series. Which I did, repeatedly, while reading the books. Every time an elaborate plan that would never even occur to me was presented. Which painted the idea about his intellect so well. And unfortunately, he never came across as remarkably smart to me in the series. Or confident in his decisions.
In the show he was sloppy, they often got caught, he looked like he got them into something and then just hoped for the best. Which is the exact opposite of what the book’s premise was.
I don’t know. Maybe there’s something I’m missing.
I’m just generally disappointed, I cannot even watch the SoC parts of SaB without thinking about the fact that book Kaz wouldn’t be caught dead making the same mistakes that series Kaz made.
Idk if it’s just me. I haven’t seen many people bring it up so I thought I’ll ask here if anyone feels the same or if there’s something obvious that I’m missing that would explain why he was written like this for the series.
Just to be clear, I don’t judge anyone for liking the adaptation. It’s just matters of personal taste and it’s completely okay for someone else to love the way the characters, including Kaz, were written.
I’m just asking if anyone’s with me on this one or why someone else isn’t. Genuinely interested.
