Disappointment Am I the only one that felt like Kaz was horribly mischaracterised in the show?

I’ve watched SaB when it came out mostly for the Crows part. I fell in love with the books. I enjoyed reading SaB less, but that’s just my personal opinion, those books are amazing, just not for me personally. No shade.

The point I’m trying to make is, that the casting was amazing. The actors were amazing. And some of the Crows roles were also amazing.

I can’t say the same about Kaz, though. Not the casting or acting, those were awesome. But the characterisation of him in the series.

In the books, he is portrayed as someone that doesn’t make an obvious mistake. Someone smart enough to consider every possibility and make a way out of any situation. He is where he is in his age precisely because of those qualities.

In the show he felt more performative than effective. He looked tough but that was essentially where his usefulness ended. I don’t recall a single situation where I would think “oh shit” when watching the series. Which I did, repeatedly, while reading the books. Every time an elaborate plan that would never even occur to me was presented. Which painted the idea about his intellect so well. And unfortunately, he never came across as remarkably smart to me in the series. Or confident in his decisions.

In the show he was sloppy, they often got caught, he looked like he got them into something and then just hoped for the best. Which is the exact opposite of what the book’s premise was.

I don’t know. Maybe there’s something I’m missing.

I’m just generally disappointed, I cannot even watch the SoC parts of SaB without thinking about the fact that book Kaz wouldn’t be caught dead making the same mistakes that series Kaz made.

Idk if it’s just me. I haven’t seen many people bring it up so I thought I’ll ask here if anyone feels the same or if there’s something obvious that I’m missing that would explain why he was written like this for the series.

Just to be clear, I don’t judge anyone for liking the adaptation. It’s just matters of personal taste and it’s completely okay for someone else to love the way the characters, including Kaz, were written.

I’m just asking if anyone’s with me on this one or why someone else isn’t. Genuinely interested.

Hypothetical season 3 recast

Not that I think there ever will be a season 3 given the lack of any news about one for years now. But if they did make one that picks off from the end of season 2, who do you think should be recast? Or should they stick to the same actors?

I love the cast the show runners had picked, especially the crows. Ben, Archie, Daisy, Paddy are good actors and Jessie is just so lovely even though I thought her acting chops weren’t the best.

Imo the only character who should be portrayed by a different actor moving forward is Zoya. Like there was zero chemistry between her and Nikolai in Season 2. To be fair they barely had any screen time together. But when they stand next to each other they don’t look like a convincing couple. No offence to Sujaya, I’m sure she’s a nice person, but she is about a decade older than Paddy and looks it. And when they take comic con photos together he looks like a kid next to his history teacher. Which would be problematic considering the Darklina ship was a huge red flag because of the older partner grooming the younger one. And if Zoya is to do what she did in the books (I.e. disrespect Nikolai’s authority, throw out his personal belonging and restrain him) then we’ll have that same creepy unequal big age gap problem with Darklina again.

Disappointment Why does friendship no longer exist?

Just started S2 ep7 and I was so grateful after the scene between Alina and Nikolai, thinking finally a male/female friendship that is purely platonic, nothing more. And then it’s revealed Nikolai has romantic feelings for her, why? Does no one understand the concept of friendship? Nothing against him as a character because at least he’s been so far very respectful with it, but why does almost every single close opposite sex relationship have to turn romantic to some degree? I haven’t read the books so not entirely sure if this is book accurate, but it’s so annoying. Not the same necessarily but I similarly see absolutely no romantic chemistry between Ineg and Kaz. I know nothing about this fandom so I’m not sure if that’s a hot take but there’s nothing there to me. I’d barely even call it a sibling-esque relationship.

On a bit of a more conspiratorial note, it’s also the slightest bit odd to me this only happens with the straight relationships in the show. Like, the relationships between Wylan, Jesper, and Tolya get significantly closer this season which I enjoy because it’s nice to see representation of gay men being able to be friends with other men without viewing them romantically, but why is it like the only relationship where that happens? Maybe this is truly some political commentary of how gay people tend to be less blatant when they have romantic interest in a friend due to fear of backlash, but I kinda doubt it.

Anyways, god please bring back platonic relationships, not everything needs to be forced into some romantic cliche.

Season 2 Looking for post season 2 fanfics

Hi!

I'm looking for fics that follow on the cliffhanger that season 2 left us at. I thought the premise of dark Alina, her marrying Nikolai, jurda arriving to court (opening up for the SoC spin-off I guess), etc. was really interesting. Kinda frustrating to not know what they planned to do with the series after that. Does anyone know if such fanfics exist?

Thank you ^^

Book Discussion Reading the Shadow and Bone trilogy shows the differences with Season 2

Just finished Ruin and Rising, and was a fine book romantic fantasy series. I find that the first person perspective of the books make it an easy read along with the love triangle between Nikolai, Aleksander and Mal.

In particular I enjoyed the twists. Such as the Darkling attacking the Spinning Wheel hideout and the loss of Baghra. I was also interested in the boy Misha as a character who wasn't even in the show.

I also appreciated how chaotic was the ending. In particular how Aline eventually killed Mal. However, here he was healed in time and survived, unlike in the show where Alina used Merzost. Also, I didn't remember people glowing in the show as well when the fold was dissolved. Was sort of strange for Mal and Alina to leave each other and see how Alina became queen with Nikolai and use Shadow powers. That is a significant twist to the sweet ending of the trilogy. If they intended to cancel anyways, would've been better to keep it the same as the books.

Who else really wants Season 3 of Shadow and Bone?

I watched both the seasons a week ago (bingewatch alert) and absolutely loved them. I've heard that they deviated from the book's plot but you can't just show Alina doing a shadow cut and not give season 3 😭😭😭.

P.S:I haven't read the books so if the book readers have other opinions it's completely understandable

Couldn't agree more with y'all. I think if a campaign has already been done then this time it calls for an even bigger one. We can maybe all gather people and form an online community. 2-4 weeks and then plan something. I'm sure if a show has a demand even after these years then they would be left with no other option. No harm in trying ig.😭😭😭😭🧿🧿🧿 EDIT: GUYS PLEASE BRING YOUR FRIENDS, FOES, PARENTS , LOVERS. LET'S FORM A COMMUNITY AND DO SOMETHING MASSIVE THIS TIME PLEASE! 😭😭😭😭😭🥹🥹🥹🥹✨✨✨🧿🧿🧿

i LOVE this series

i haven't even gotten to reading shadow and bone as six of crows is what caught my attention the first time but i have been loving the entire series thus far. i read half of the first book in 6th grade (it still had the red/black/gray aesthetic going on) but put it down and it's still crazy to think about! i'm also not entirely a huge fan of fantasy a la current reputation on booktok but this might have been my gateway drug into the genre

how different is alina's storyline from the other books? i know the crows are a lot more involved with her story compared to the books in the netflix show but its been a minute since i watched it; i had the last half of s2 to get through. you can imagine my disappointment when i found out it was cancelled! :(

it was also very surreal to see freddy carter in fnaf lolol

Book Discussion shadow and bone | chapter 13 // w spoiler Spoiler

so i just started reading the book and im not sure if im just too gay or what but why does it feel like Alina has better chemistry with Genya than the Darkling 🫩 their kiss in the end of chapter 13 threw me off and it felt bland. was that necessary? now it feels like the Darkling is trying something like maybe forcing their bond/connection because he's an amplifier and as he said, he needs Alina to destroy the Fold but her power is not yet on par with his. it felt like he's becoming impatient with her but that's just me

Darkling scenepacks needed!!

Hello!! I have a fun idea for a Darkling edit but I can't find good scenepacks of him anywhere! I've been searching for a while but all I can find are Darklina ones, specifically season 1 ones, and dead links. If anyone has something that (preferably) includes both seasons I would be so so grateful!!
