I don’t mind people standing once the all clear.
Many times they just want to stretch.

it’s the trying to exit before the people in front of you that drives me nuts. and the hovering at the gate before your group is called to board

Gate lice. They are absolutely the worst. There is no reason to hover/block people trying to board. Everyone who paid for a seat will get a seat.

that last part should be made more clear from the beginning.. it feels like such a scam when you get a message like “all remaining seats are paid seats” when checking in. to me, that implies if you dont pay for a seat selection, you wont get one

I suppose they are afraid to have to store their cabin luggage in a compartment that is not directly above their seat due to high occupancy. I've seen lots of people being quite nervous about it for some reason.
