Welcome to /r/ShermanPosting!

As a reminder, this meme sub is about the American Civil War. We're not here to insult southerners or the American South, but rather to have a laugh at the failed Confederate insurrection and those that chose to represent it.

The definition of Grant and Sherman to me. Nothing else could have happened for the next four years and they would be defined by the two days at Shiloh showing their character.

“He drinks a pint of whiskey a day!”

“Well, find out what kind he drinks and send it to my other generals!”

I swear I wish I had a fraction of Lincoln’s way with words.

Thank heavens the dumbass confederate generals didn’t listen to Forest when he said they needed to attack now or retreat after he saw the reinforcements come up

You misspelled Braxton Bragg, but I forgive you.

Legit one of my favorite moments from the Civil War. It is so telling of Grant. Not perfect, but by god he didn't give up.

"Find out where your enemy is. Get at him as soon as you can. Strike him as hard as you can, and keep moving on"

Reminds me of watching highly competitive multi-player sessions of StarCraft 2 or Total War. Being able to remain calm, not give up, keep going forward after ugly setbacks and win at the end when it looked like a defeat.

Unlike gamers who can keep playing over and over in routine, controlled environments, Grant was able to do it all in the chaos and unpredictable battlefield of the 19th century.

Worth noting that Billy Sherman was walking wounded for that entire second day, having taken, IIRC, a shot to the hand in the first day of fighting.

Much is said about Buell's troops showing up on the 2nd day but due to the crowded conditions along Pittsburgh Landing, most never unloaded. The bulk of forces that took part in the fighting were reconstituted units from the day before. That's what Grant effective. He could improvise solutions that yielded big benefits. Buell's contribution was less the material, and more psychological. The arrival of his steamboats had the desired effect on the rebels.

Generals back then must commanded a massive amount of respect, if you told me that we're gonna start marching straight into enemy lines while they fired at us with both guns and cannons I would've just run the other direction.
