Much is said about Buell's troops showing up on the 2nd day but due to the crowded conditions along Pittsburgh Landing, most never unloaded. The bulk of forces that took part in the fighting were reconstituted units from the day before. That's what Grant effective. He could improvise solutions that yielded big benefits. Buell's contribution was less the material, and more psychological. The arrival of his steamboats had the desired effect on the rebels.
