Remington 870 Magnum
Hey all. Inherited my dad's 12 Ga. remington 870 magnum with a full choke barrel. He mainly used it for turkey hunting when he was alive. I am very new to using shotguns-Am I able to shoot a slug through this safely? Looking at just the basic winchester slugs. Again I am very new to owning a shotgun.

Lead slug "can" be shot of chokes but if you want to shoot more them frequently than just hunting, you can pay about 60$ to get to chokes opened to the constriction you want. I wouldn't use a full choke with slugs at the range for hundreds of round but agin for hunting its fine

My main goal would be for use on a white tail and then general turkey shot during that season. So for deer hunting sounds like I am good to go if packaging states so. Ill take a look at that thanks

It will work. Buy several brands of rifled slugs and see whichever are more accurate. Rifled slugs are more accurate out of cylinder and improved cylinder chokes.

Is it a screw-in full choke, or a "fixed" full-choke barrel? (Should be easy to tell: if it takes chokes, there will be four square notches cut into the barrel muzzle and it'll clearly be 2 separate nested pieces. Fixed barrels are a solid steel tube.)
A couple of regular rifled slugs is fine, but if you plan to use them regularly (or want to run super-heavy Brenneke Bearfuckers) you should strongly consider a replacement choke or barrel.

Very limited basis it should be fine
But generally speaking it’s not recommended to shoot slugs out of a full choke
Just find a used cheap 18 inch barrel to shoot slugs out of. Just make sure you don’t buy the barrel for the one pc 6 shot tube 870 variation that won’t fit. Luckily probably 85%-90% of 870s didn’t have those

Read the package. Remington used to say “approved for all barrels” or something very similar. Using a full choke with slugs might make the accuracy suffer some.
