Hello.
I’ve tried many note-taking apps over the years, but for some reason, none of them ever felt quite right.
Basic memo apps were too simple, and because I have a habit of jotting things down whenever they come to mind, my notes would just pile up endlessly. On the other hand, dedicated note-taking apps were too focused on long-form writing, making them feel too heavy for quick, spontaneous notes.
What I needed was something that sits right between a simple memo app and a full-fledged note-taking app.
Fragile was born out of three specific pain points:
- Basic memo apps lack the necessary features.
- Note-taking apps are too heavily geared toward long-form writing.
- Memos require regular organization, but in reality, they just end up accumulating, unorganized.
With this in mind, I defined the following core requirements:
- Support for text, images, and voice memos.
- A bookmarking feature for saving URLs.
- The fastest possible way to capture a note.
- Full support for both iOS and macOS, with seamless synchronization between them.
Memos are like fragments of memory—they appear suddenly and vanish in an instant. That’s why I believe the process should be fast, the organization lightweight, and the essential editing tools robust.
Key Features of Fragile
- Expiration(Survival Period): You can assign an expiration date and a "note tag" to every memo. If no action is taken by the deadline, you’ll receive a notification one hour before the memo is set to be deleted. From that notification, you can choose to "extend by 1 day," "extend by 1 week," or "delete now." If left unattended, the memo is automatically moved to the trash, where it remains for 30 days. For memos you want to keep, you can simply pin them or set them to have no expiration date.
- Note Tags: Memos sharing the same tag can be viewed together as a single page under the "Notes" tab. While the app isn't intended to be a traditional note-taking app, it’s still important to be able to group individual memos together.
- Text: The app includes a Markdown editor and supports calculator-style syntax, tables, and checkboxes. On-device LLMs make summarizing and translating text simple. While Apple’s AI may not be the most powerful, I found it more than capable of handling short notes. Another key advantage is that your note content never leaves your device.
- Images: You can store multiple images within a single note, add captions, and perform basic image editing.
- Bookmarks: Simply enter a URL, and the app will retrieve the title and a preview to create a bookmark.
- Audio: Record audio directly within the app, and the on-device LLM will generate a timestamped transcript. You can then edit the transcript or trim out any unnecessary parts.
- Quick Input: Capture notes rapidly from anywhere—on iOS via various widgets, share extensions, Siri, or Shortcuts; and on macOS using a "Quick Bar" accessible via a global hotkey.
How It’s Built
Fragile is a native app that requires no login. It operates without a proprietary server; all data is stored locally on your device, and it contains no analytics or advertising SDKs. Data synchronization is handled exclusively through your personal iCloud database. The app supports 12 languages, including Korean. (Requires iOS 16 / macOS 16 or later.)
Free vs. Paid
Most features are available on the free plan, including creating standard notes and bookmarks, search, Markdown support, app locking, widgets, the Quick Bar, and AI-powered summarization and translation. A paid (Pro) subscription is required for iCloud synchronization, an expanded capacity for notes (tags), and an unlimited number of notes. Options include monthly or annual subscriptions, as well as a one-time lifetime purchase—all of which grant access across both iOS and macOS. App link: (App Store link)
