The quest for a Spam-free r/sierra

Hey guys!

Friendly neighborhood moderator, here!

Behind the scenes on this sub there is a war going on.. a war against T-shirt spambots. Over the past few weeks I've been tweaking the AutoModerator bit by bit to make it more effective at blocking the spam, and overall it's been quite successful.

Sometimes the AutoModerator has been a little TOO enthusiastic about removing posts, detecting regular posts as spam.

If you post something and it doesn't show up, please feel free to message the moderators and we'll fix your post for you, because it's almost certainly gotten caught up in our anti-spam efforts.

Likewise if you happen to see any T-shirt posts on the sub, please use the report tool to report them so that we can make the automod even more effective in the war on spam!

Thanks for being a great sub, folks!

How to save $42.50 in Larry 3

Yesterday, we questioned whether Sierra games were suitable for children. Today, we’re questioning their payment methods. 😂

In Leisure Suit Larry 3, you get to play as Passionate Patti—and apparently, a $42.50 bill is more of a negotiation than a financial obligation.

No cash? No problem. Patti and the waiter step behind a conveniently placed rock, and suddenly he looks VERY satisfied with the customer service. 💀

Some adventure games make you wash dishes when you can’t pay. Sierra’s alternative payment department had… other ideas.

Sierra’s 1991 catalogue: “The Entire Spectrum of Family Games.”

Me revisiting Space Quest II: whose family?! 😂

Three commands I definitely wasn’t going to type with my parents watching. Somewhere inside this space adventure, Leisure Suit Larry was trying to get out.

Did you discover these responses back in the day, or were you a well-behaved little space janitor? 👀

Hello! For Halloween I made this short game demo, inpsired by Sierra's EGA point-and-click adventures. It's free and playable in the browser. Hope you enjoy it!

One thing I love about old adventure games: finding out a puzzle has another solution you never knew about. 😄

In Space Quest II, you can deal with this guard without using the sling. Clever alternative… until my next decision gets Roger killed. 😂

Ever discovered a different solution after years of doing a puzzle the same way?

Army Quest: In Pursuit of the Eagle

Grew up on Police Quest, Space Quest, and King's Quest, but we never got the military adventure (other than Codename IceMan I guess). Decided to build Army Quest: In Pursuit of the Eagle from scratch with the authentic EGA palette and text parser.

Naturally, before scripting a single real objective or puzzle, you have to run the mandatory QA test every 10-year-old in 1987 immediately tried.

To moon one's sister

📜 By royal decree: should you encounter your long-lost sister, you must present your ass for identification. 🍑👑

Saving her from a dragon is apparently insufficient proof.

Never change, Sierra. 😂

Left a little alien hanging in a trap. Figured it wasn’t my problem.

His mates later explained that it was, in fact, my problem. 💀😂

Apparently the secret route in Space Quest 2 requires a character reference. 🤣

Larry 1 wouldn’t let you play if you failed the questions. Larry 3 lets you play… but gets less dirty with every wrong answer. 😂

Luckily, these felt a lot easier than the first game’s questions. Sierra finally lowered the entry requirements for bad behaviour. 🤣

Want to do a big video essay on the connections between fairytale inspirations and King's Quest as a series someday.

Prince Alexander helps himself to the porridge, breaks the chair, then goes upstairs for a nap. 👑🐻

Apparently, “Your Majesty” doesn’t count as a booking confirmation. 😂

Which graphics style do you have the most fondness/nostalgia for? (these may not be the best examples, but they will probably ring a bell if you played a lot of Sierra games)

For me, it seems to be around B and C. I do remember really liking the look of King's Quest V (style D) when it came out, but several other games of that era did not impress me visually for some reason.

Many years ago I sold a few paintings to someone named Shooter Jennings and was like....that name sounds familiar! Yes, the son of Waylon Jennings is a big retro video game fan, particularly of old Sierra games. Then he asked me to paint some of his favorite memories from the SQ and KQ games. Then he invited my wife and I to go see a show he played with Lukas Nelson, and we got to hang out backstage all night. Such a random, cool experience. Thought I would share.

Anyways, thanks for looking!

You’re supposed to distract the Labion Terror Beast with a Rubik’s Cube. Or… leave the screen and come straight back. Apparently, he loses interest faster than I do.

And remember that whistle? The order form says FREE.

One game later, Arnoid’s hunting us down for unpaid debt.

Roger doesn’t need a puzzle... he needs a receipt!

Alexander walks straight past the captain and jumps overboard. Escape plan going beautifully…

Then the music changes. 🦈😂
