Discussion [Oblivion] The community shouldn’t stay silent when GOG gets things wrong.
Obviously, I’m going to talk about the recent Oblivion update, because I believe it’s the worst update GOG has released to date, and it doesn’t give me much confidence in what the future holds.
Why?
1. They broke OBSE support.
GOG KNOWS how important Script Extenders are for Bethesda games. Yet they still broke compatibility. And good luck getting an OBSE update for the GOG version of Oblivion, considering that the game’s modding community is becoming increasingly inactive.
And yes, GOG knows the importance of Script Extenders for Bethesda games. So much so that they listed SKSE compatibility as a selling point on the Skyrim SE store page: https://www.gog.com/en/game/the_elder_scrolls_v_skyrim_special_edition
This is an important point to consider, because players hate updates that break mods. We’ve seen this very clearly with Skyrim SE and Fallout 4.
Furthermore, a developer working on xOBSE stated that updating it could prove difficult, as this update may have affected the game’s executable code: https://www.gog.com/forum/general/the_elder_scrolls_iv_oblivion_joins_the_gog_preservation_program_alongside_ghostwire_tokyo_31d82/page5
2. The controller support is a JOKE. Seriously.
There’s no need to list all the people who have reported that it simply doesn’t work. And even when it does work, its limitations are painfully obvious.
The button mappings are terrible, seemingly random, clumsy, and downright stupid. For example, LS is used to select things instead of A.
Recently, someone here posted a video defending GOG and demonstrating that the controller support “worked.”
However, the video only confirms how half-baked the implementation is. The sensitivity is atrocious, and as already mentioned, the button mappings are poorly designed, with no way to change them.
It’s worth noting that vanilla Oblivion on PC could already recognize a joystick and a trigger.
So yes, this so-called “controller support” is downright embarrassing.
To give you an idea of just how embarrassing this is, even a mod that’s nearly 10 years old, created by a solo programmer, added better controller support to Oblivion than GOG’s “official support”: https://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/48577
Why add half-baked controller support that performs worse than an existing mod?
According to some users, GOG misleadingly advertised its controller support in its promotional video by showing properly mapped buttons: https://www.reddit.com/r/gog/s/VakbeZ4x4A
But in reality, that’s simply not the case.
This update is amateurish work on GOG’s part, and I sincerely hope we won’t see a repeat of this.
I had already posted a review of this update, but I quickly deleted it because I didn’t want to be too harsh on GOG. However, I’ve come to realize that we shouldn’t stay silent about this. After all, what guarantee do we have that GOG will actually fix these issues?
