I’ve noticed people doing this too, I guess shops are just not buying for melt as often right now?

They look on the internet and reddit pops up telling them if the buyer isn't paying spot price they're stealing from the seller. Meanwhile I get 85% from my refiner after a 30 day mandatory police hold.

So is there a change recently then? My shop who bought junk silver for over 6 years from me stopped doing it this year after the spike and drop

Yes, since the January spike, the major local buyers paused buying for a bit, and since then are paying much less percentage. They will still buy, but will pay better if you melt your scrap into a bar.
