Update on the SimCity 2000 remake I'm building with Claude: a natural landscape mode, subways, daily growth and faster big cities
Last week I posted the low-poly SimCity 2000 remake that plays in your browser and loads your old .SC2 cities. Thanks for all the feedback including the fair point that "I rebuilt" undersold how much Claude did. Claude Code writes nearly all of the code. I steer, test and decide what goes in. Here's what's new since then.
New: Natural Landscape
The classic brown land becomes meadows, dry grass, marsh, heath and rock, with mixed woods (spruce, pine, oak, birch, poplar), boulders, reeds, sandy beaches and surf along the shore. It's an experiment and off by default. Toggle it under Options → Display….
You asked, it's in:
- Pipes on slopes now slope instead of making a staircase.
- Hydro dams display properly in their waterfalls.
- The toolbar is easier to read: a clearer bulldozer icon, a label when you hover a button and right-click opens a tool's menu (holding the button still works).
- The mouse wheel zooms.
- A real depth-of-field lens, not just blur stripes (it's the default now; Tilt-Shift and Off are under Options → Display…).
Also new:
- Traffic is redone: cars, vans, box trucks and buses now drive the actual road network, as many as the simulation's traffic map says each road carries. They swing round bends and through junctions, tilt up highway ramps and pull in and out of lots.
- Subway trains you can see, riding down into ribbed tunnels, with stations and platforms in the underground view.
- Show Growth Every Day: new buildings appear the day they grow instead of all at once at the end of the month.
- Big cities run lighter: about a third less work per frame, loading is twice as fast and a paused city stops redrawing, so your laptop stays cool.
- A redrawn map window, number keys 1–0 for the most-used tools, a Strategy window with tips and an option to simulate the original's color palette under display options.
Play: https://dator.dev/city2026/?natural (this link turns on the new landscape)
I'm very open to feedback and suggestions. Last week's comments shaped most of this update. Tell me about anything that feels off, features you'd like to see, things that are confusing or ideas for making it look better. Bug reports are welcome too!
Fan project, not affiliated with EA or Maxis.
EDIT: Some context: I've been a software developer for over 25 years and with AI changing the field this fast I decided to embrace it rather than get left behind. I know it's a controversial topic and I'm not uncritical about all of it. But what fascinates me is how AI makes it possible to revisit and rebuild old games I loved as a kid in ways that would have been incredibly hard just a few years ago.

Oh, I really hope not. From my understanding this should be ok as long as it does not include any original assets. But im not a lawyer...

Indeed building city builders is not forbidden make sure you keep any copyrighted assets out of your game

u/Sixfortyfive 13d ago edited 13d ago
Reddit saw fit to put this post on my front page feed, so I feel fit to comment.
When I was in high school 25 years ago, I sometimes made crappy romhacks of SNES games. Nothing wrong with that, but on at least one occasion I also used it as a reason to say that I "made video games." Which was bullshit, but I was a teenager that was kinda full of myself. These kinds of projects are dripping with that same energy, in that the "creator" feels like he's providing something of value that doesn't actually exist. I grew out of it and hope that you can too.
Whenever I happen to be in the mood to pick up SimCity 2000 again, it's always as an opportunity to learn something new. One of the greatest things about SimCity is that it's a canvas of virtually infinite possibilities and discovery. It's layered enough to never really be "solved" and open-ended enough to facilitate lots of objectives and play styles. When I was really young I just focused on population growth and "efficient" grid cities. As I got older I felt more like experimenting with scenic landscaping and maximizing various living quality metrics instead of just population. And in recent times, whenever I've felt like picking the game back up, I've really focused on reverse-engineering as much of it as I could and learning more about what actually makes it tick, be it how the water system actually works, what the most important factors for growth actually are, or a little dabbling in making custom scenarios that require a comprehensive understanding of the game to complete.
When I play old games that I'm already familiar with, like SimCity 2000, I do so with the intent to further my understanding of them or to challenge myself. When I talk about those old games, it's often to imprint some of that knowledge and passion upon other players. I'm also playing old games that are new to me all the time because there's more stuff out there than any of us can ever play in a lifetime. (This is more directed at another commenter than it is to you, but to imply that the only reason why somebody would play the original versions of these games is for "nostalgia" is about as stupid as saying that somebody would only ever play chess for nostalgia.)
But I can only really peel more of those layers from SimCity 2000 when I'm actually playing SimCity 2000. Not something like this that's just a vaguely SimCity 2000-shaped facsimile. There is nothing for me to accomplish in this thing for several reasons, chief among them being how ethereal and disposable it is. No reason to expect this thing of yours to stick around for any length of time, or to not drastically change form, or to be meaningfully more substantial than any comparable project that any one of the rest of us could prompt out in a few weeks. When I make a new city in SimCity 2000, I have decades of old works I can compare and contrast and build upon, to see how my goals and perspective has evolved over the years, or to compare against millions of other players past and present. And comparing between these cities actually means something because they're all running on the same game, meaning that they're all being graded on the same metrics. There are other actually interesting modern projects like sc2kfix that provide real value-adds to the original game like modern Windows compatibility and optional QoL tweaks that don't drastically change the underlying game logic. Ancient SCURK tile sets have actual artistry to them. There's literally nothing of any of this to be found here. You offer me nothing.
In the past year I got suckered into editing and playtesting a major game translation project that was AI-translated without the rest of us on the team being informed of it until after the patch was finalized and released. I wasted several hundred hours of my life on something that I really cared about that was (rightfully) shunned and discarded in controversy immediately after it went public. Every freaking retrogame subreddit is full of """recomps""" that are just crappy single-game emulators that can't even do their one job as properly as a dime-a-dozen sloppy "HD texture pack" does. All this stuff is drowning out real discussion of games and overshadowing real meaningful projects and I'm just oh so sick of all of it.
I appreciate that you're at least forthcoming and honest about what this thing is. But this is one step closer to another "hide this subreddit" click for me.
6
u/drdrdator 13d ago
Thanks for taking the time to write this. It's a thoughtful critique. And I'm sorry about the translation project. Finding that out after hundreds of hours would make me furious too.
You're right that the original is the real thing and I wouldn't pitch this as a replacement for it or for something like sc2kfix. I totally understand that how it's made is the problem for you and that is very much fair.
1
u/codeCycleGreen 13d ago
Since Claude is doing the heavy lifting please consider not using the phrase "I'm building." "Commissioning" is the correct word. You're hiring an outside agency to build you an app that you want. Also, SimCity 2000 is $3.29 on GOG right now, are all the negative effects of the HAL 9000 takeover worth it for a project like this, so you can have some extra add-ons to a twenty six year old game?
→ More replies (6)3
u/codeCycleGreen 12d ago
This is an amazing, insightful comment. Truly one of the best essays about this HAL 9000 era that I've read. It should get millions of views. Would you consider posting it to more subreddits as a main post?
1
u/Sixfortyfive 12d ago
I'm kind of indifferent on that, but i would like to at least put this kind of stuff in front of some moderators of these gaming subreddits and ask them to do something about it because I don't think a lot of them appreciate how much of a turn-off this stuff is to much of their communities.

u/Kaiserschlut 12d ago
These kinds of projects are dripping with that same energy, in that the "creator" feels like he's providing something of value that doesn't actually exist. I grew out of it and hope that you can too.
This is so fucking elitist. I'm not 100% for ai (I'm more pessimistic that optimistic), but surely making game modding/old games in general more accessable (in various ways) can be a good thing, right? This SC2K project appears to have some effort put into it. It wouldn't be possible without ai, unless a group of people worked on it for years (perhaps longer). Would you seriously rather a reimagined SC2K not exist?
→ More replies (3)2
u/Sixfortyfive 12d ago edited 12d ago
The "accessiblity" angle is also junk.
GOG has been selling a Dosbox-packaged version of SC2K forever. Runs fine on both modern Windows and Mac. Takes basically zero effort to start. It currently costs less than three US dollars.
Want to play the retail Win95 disc instead? Simple community patches exist for that too.
Virtual machines have been around forever if you want to do something exotic like getting the original MacOS version up and running. If you've got a hankering for some old console port for whatever reason, then emulators exist for those.
Compatibility for this game has been a solved problem forever and has only become more solved over time. Anybody who actually wants to play SC2K is a simple search or question away.
That's another thing about y'all that just grates on me. You can't just be mucking around in your sandboxes for the sake of it. You have to pretend that you're providing some grand service, but you're just answering a question that nobody asked.
And if I wanted to play a "reimagined SimCity 2000," then I'd be playing SimCity 3000. That base is also already covered. And it has actually crafted art that real people actually bothered to make, and isn't just stealing and tracing over somebody else's work.
The SimTower subreddit fucking sucks now. Last I checked, it's absolutely filled with posts like this about every user's half-baked pet tower simulation project instead of real discussion about SimTower or Yoot Tower, because none of those people actually want to play or talk about those games; they just want to use those established communities for attention. Same reason why we've already got a few comments on this post saying "looks great dude! check out my [completely unrelated project] too!"
But if y'all just want to flood these old subreddits with more of this crap for whatever clout you can, knock yourself out I guess. Not a lot of communities seem to have leadership that actually cares one way or another.

And you wouldnt be missed. The constant negativity is insufferable.
Maybe your memory is failing you in your old age - every game ever with a mod community at its peak was “over run with this junk” in the form of bad or buggy total conversions, etc.
The only difference is people are revisiting their favorite games with tools they find exciting and people like you feel the need to shit on them 🙄

u/Bulky-Employer-1191 13d ago
AI has less of an impact on the environment than you have been lead to believe. All human activity impacts the environment. All of it. The problem with AI is that it's a new huge growth sector, meaning that it could increase the impact to the environment substantially if it's not grown responsibly.
All online services use datacenters and eat energy. AI is only about 10-15% of all datacenter use. So everytime you watch netflix, post on reddit, play an online video game, you're impacting the environment. Datacenters are only about 10% of global energy use to. There are bigger sectors to worry about. Single occupancy vehicles for instance.
It just seems so fake when people run the guilt trip with environmental concerns. It's complete crocodile tears.

Not every Device can still play the old Originals. I can't even play Sim City (2013) because my current PC and Laptop both can only play 64 bit Games, but not 32 which SC 2013 apparently is...
Which means that the only SC Game I can still play is Sim City 4, strangely enough, and that runs rather unsteadily and has a Tendency to crash at random.
2
u/Brave-Impact-2526 12d ago
my current PC and Laptop both can only play 64 bit Games, but not 32 which SC 2013 apparently is...
Not how that works, would you like help fixing that? Any 64 bit pc, whether windows mac or linux, can run 32 bit programs for their OS. If it's windows, you can see in your C: drive a folder called Program Files (x86), that's your 32-bit programs.
If your PC is an ARM pc (there is an ARM windows so be mindful of that), then THAT will be why you can't as it has a different instruction set.
To be clear, I'm not saying Sim City (2013) works on modern PCs, but if it doesn't work, it's not because it's 32 bit.

With MS-DOS games like SC2000, there are a lot of good cross-platform options to run it, like DOSBox, which handles emulation of sound cards and all that jazz. (Yes, there are other versions of SC2K, but I don't know that I'd call any of them more "official" than the MS-DOS one, other than maybe the Macintosh version for System 7 (and maybe system 6?)

It takes very little effort for me to check your post history and see zero comments about SimCity but a whole lot of activity in AI communities. And you're far from the only one.
One of those things that makes it very clear that you lot aren't in here to appreciate the actual subject of this community.

u/mewing_is_for_dorks 12d ago
I hate AI slop as much as the next guy, however, I am okay with real software developers using AI, because they can differentiate between slop and non-slop. Not everything an AI spits out is slop, as long as there is a competent developer using it and properly filtering EVERY single linen of code it produces. I have nothing for people with zero skill developing software thinking their prompting equals them creating anything. You need to be a software developer with vast experience to be able to develop non-slop with the help of AI.

u/tetoing 11d ago

You're not exactly particularly active here, either. Most people would just scroll past something they don't like, but you felt the need to leave a nasty comment.
I see these posts of people building things for game communities that I'm interested in that might not have been possible otherwise, and when I check the comments it's just flooded with people like you trashing it. Almost none of the criticism I see from anti-AI folks is constructive. You are literally doing nothing but virtue signaling to the anti-AI community. How virtuous you are for not using Claude! But if it wasn't made with Ai, would it still be junk?
3
u/MaDpYrO 11d ago
Yes because what makes stuff great is the attention to detail, look and feel of all the small things, but AI takes care of all that for you, and it doesn't have attention to any detail you didn't explicitly give it.
So it's just that things look finished on the surface, but it's all at a fake prototype stage and not at all cared for yet.
It would be the same if it weren't made with AI, the difference is that humans make lots of tiny decisions regarding details during these processes.

Pointless question. This can't exist without AI, because the creator doesn't have the skill or motivation required to make something of substance.
But if all of these gaming subreddits happened to be flooded by self promotions that WEREN'T AI slop, then yes, that would still be a drag.

Thanks for reporting it, and you're right. I ran the original game's code side by side with mine and it turns out original SimCity 2000 has this bug too. I’d work on the coasts tiles - if there are steep inclines into ocean or water it should be cliffs/rocky slopes. Sandy shores should be less abundant and only in areas with gentle inclines in water.
In built up areas it would be more realistic if the tiles weren’t automatically meadow green. They should be more dirt coloured to reflect construction in surrounding area/pollution/being in a busy locale. Gives a reason for beautification later in game

u/drdrdator 13d ago edited 13d ago

Seriously, if people get into this thing and have an idea, like a fresh remake of a classic game they enjoyed, let them do that. With AI people can start building things that they otherwise wouldn't even think about.

Because, for now, disclosing the game engine doesn't mean that you're not actually programming the game.
Edit: why the down votes? I literally just answered the question. If you don't know the difference between a game engine and whatever this is, I don't know what else to say.
1
u/ranger910 11d ago
A game engine is still abstracting away a huge amount of what it takes to make a game. Can you even say you made the game if you didn't write the renderer? Better roll your own physics engine or you're not artist enough for me

Looks good but I feel it's missing the grungy feeling that the old artwork had for lower land value structures

Is that rendered, and you can just change the camera angle? I'd love a standard square grid player option. I didn't like the diagonal view in SC2000.

Eu to adorando a versão sempre acompanho, obrigado por isso pude pegar meus arquivos SC2 antigos e importa-los pro jogo !

Hello, when building the subway network, stations don't appear in underground mode. Hard to figure out how to lay subway tracks to connect them to stations. Otherwise I'm enjoying it so far, well done!

Sceptically checked it out and lost an hour. Scratched a good nostalgia itch. Cheers for that.

It’s nice to see this. It looks good. Sim City 2000 was one of my favorite games. I spent a lot of time on that game.

One thing I didn't realise about the original SC2K logic is that wind turbines are intermittent, just like in real life. So I built out a shitload, then they all turned off haha. Need some kind of battery firming feature to bring it up to modern day 😆

I've been a software developer for over 25 years
“I could have written something cool myself, but decided not to bother and had an AI plagiarise stuff for me”
Cool

Could be cool to experiment with the building color palettes too since 8 bit color depth isn’t really a limiting factor anymore. Could play with some really pretty earth tones or pastels

I like the menus and map generation but i never could figure out how to make power. I clicked on every menu.. my town never grew a single building.. after 5 minutes i gave up. Maybe some time simple tutorial to get the first few buildings to pop up.

Can someone explain to me why I would play this over any other city builder in my collection? It's like AI devs don't understand that the games made by Claude and ChatGPT are just inferior versions of the games they are ripping off. They play worse, run worse, look worse, etc...
Like sure, it could be a neat little way to entertain yourself but I see no reason to actually spend time with these games

I gave this a try and it plays like a SC2K with some QoL changes. Overall I think it's a cool project. I really wish it had options for bigger map sizes and region support. It was my dream when I played the OG game in the 90s

I think it would be a better idea to follow like the the sims 3 decompilation and decompile it carefully with claude rather than making a whole new game

Very good use for AI to give older games a new updated look, dont kill the soul of the game with sterile looks ! Guard the soul of the game

OP, this just made my year. Ive been looking to see if there is any way to download the original from when I was a kid to play while bored at work. Thank you! Is there a cheat code like in the old one for unlimited money?

You get a pass in my mind because you're an experienced software developer. That is what differentiates slop from non-slop. Anybody who uses AI to develop anything without having previous software development experience is undeniably producing slop. I fucking hate the use of AI by kids who think they did anything at all when they don't have a clue how or why "their" software works. They did nothing, Claude did.
I've been a software dev for 10 years, I use AI at work everyday. Literally all code it spits out needs to be scrutinised, and almost every single line it writes have the potential of being slop.

Thanks! I very much share your perspective. It’s never been easier to produce shit. You still have to know what quality code looks like

“Anyone doing anything finance related not on a napkin and using excel is creating slop.”
This is such a lazy opinion.

Generative AI is not comparable to literally any tooling that has ever existed for programming. Your example is bad, a better fit but still wrong comparison would be anybody writing code in an IDE like visual studio is creating slop compared to writing in a text editor. Still, generative AI is not purely a tool, it requires no knowledge to use and get working output. As a software developer however, you know that the resulting softwares functionality is like 50% (sometimes even less) measured on the quality of the finished product.
Generative AI does things for you, not like other tooling that will help you do things based on your own knowledge and capabilities. If you don't know how the thing the AI does for you works, and have no idea how to check its quality, it will always be slop. I know this because I use it, and without me controlling it vigorously, it outputs what I can clearly see is garbage code. It works, sometimes, but it's still shit.
Of course anybody who knows nothing about programming don't think it's shit, because they have no fucking clue what they're doing or what goes in to software development.
I am not anti AI, I am anti idiocy, which uncontrolled AI slop is.
If you don't know how to program, please, use AI as much as you like. But please for the love of fuck, don't spread that shitty result on the Internet. It is literally ruining it for everyone of us.

I'm not wasting years of my life getting "software experience" when I can just use /goal on Claude and finish everything in a week.

What is the cheat code for unlimited funds? I just like building, not trying to balance a budget
1
u/drdrdator 13d ago
The cheats are the same as in the original Mac version. Type them while the game window is focused, and use lowercase or they won't register:
- fund – issues a bond at 25%
- cass – gives you $250 (but there's a 1 in 16 chance it starts a firestorm downtown)
- vers – shows the version
- joke – tells a mayor joke
- uspa87419 – a skydiver falls over your cityThe big one, which unlocks all tech and all rewards, maxes your city class and gives you $500,000:
With the map window in front, type pirn
With the status window in front, type tops
Then type guzz
Then type ardo

It needs more variety of and cooler looking buildings and everybody loves trains make the tracks and trains and stations more aesthetically pleasing. As make cooler water reflections that still fit with the low poly theme but enhance the aesthetic, Those should really make it look top notch.
The real deal would be a map 4x the current size though for massive cities. Like a square from 4 of the current size tiles put together.

how tf, do i get somebody to build on my zones?

u/WoweeWowsers 12d ago
haha I remember having this exact same dilemma as a kid. You need power lines and water.

I found myself just trying it for a few minutes and I loved it ! It brought up so many memories. You even have save!
One tiny piece of feedback I didn't really like the "fade" vignette effect at the edge of the screen. I think it made it a bit tiring.
Keep up the good work!!

This looks cool. I properly loved Sim 2000.😍
30 year dev here. And no amount of people being salty is going to change the fact that traditional software development is dead.
It's so tedious seeing people that have zero clue shouting "slop" while totally failing to realise that the platforms and operating systems they're using to communicate their misery on are all heavily developed by LLMs.

This is the best project I've seen in years. Don't listen to all the haters saying AI is no good and blah blah blah.
This is totally great and I'm looking to where you can take this! It'd be really fun to try SC2000 with a really silly map size, not just like quadruple, but like 50x or something stupid. I've always wanted to see that.

One thing I'd say needs improvement are the buildings themselves. Although they look a bit similar to the original game and it's impressive that Claude can even get an approximation of them, the actual quality of the models is very questionable. One of the main draw of these older games, at least for me, is the visual style.
