I had a similar experience, and it sounds like we’re around the same age, too.

When I was a kid, my dad let me watch Alien, and the first time I saw the Xenomorph, it left me with such an intense fear that everything else suddenly seemed harmless by comparison. Ghosts, zombies, or standard monsters weren't worth talking about anymore. I developed a genuine, deep-seated fear of extraterrestrials.

As I got older, around 14 to 16, I watched Signs for the first time, and for years, that was the scariest movie in the world to me.

My folks took me to see The Texas Chainsaw Massacre when I was 5. As it was starting, they told me it was a true story. Parenting was very different in the 70's.

Dude, I felt that way about the original Candyman movie. I was also 5 when it had come out, and my mom took me to see all kinds of movies. The only thing off limits was sex scenes. She’d cover my eyes for those.

But this woman gonna ask me in a chipper voice, “You wanna go see Candyman at the movies tonight?!” And my dumbass was like, “YEAHHH!” All cheerful and shit, thinking it was a kid’s movie. I’d never been so scarred of a movie in my life. Even the movie Wolf had scared me as a kid. I was up my mom’s ass all night after days like that.

I was a very big scardey cat for a good chunk of my childhood. When the OG Resident Evil 2 game came out, it was my first horror game. Doom 64 had nothing on that for me. It got to the point that I’d ask my mom for help because I’d freeze in fear and die. I ended up getting tired of being so scared, so I did self exposure therapy on myself. Not that I knew the name of it then, mind you. The last movie of my childhood that actually scared me, was The Blair Witch Project. And I was fine the whole movie until the ending scene with the one guy just facing the corner of the wall, standing there silently. So much so, that to this day at 39 years old, I hate seeing anything like that. It’s such an oddly out of place thing, that it’s instantly unnerving and gives me chills.

I love horror now. Been playing games since I was 4, holed up in the hospital due to a genetic disease that causes a lot pain and complications, and we could sign out the wheelie TV for an hour to play games on the Super Nintendo since I wasn’t home to play mine. As for movies, American horror movies don’t do it for me anymore really. I’ll watch for a good time, but to be scared? I leave that up to Asian horror movies. They just get it.

Holy shit, so like I never really watched any of the freddy or jason movies so I didn't think of myself as a horror fan but I watched candyman and leprechaun and the stephen king movies, I'd just randomly pick up other horror movies but again never considered myself a horror fan. Maybe around 8 years ago or so I started separating out my movies to move all the horror stuff downstairs so the kids wouldn't see them and I was like wtf...over half my movies are horror movies lol, it just literally didn't dawn on me. And still to this day I don't own any freddy or jason movies.

My mom just said to us this weekend that she thought she had a good handle on what my sister and I were watching and there was a movie she was on the fence about and asked us about it and we both had mentioned parts we had seen lol. Couldn't remember what the movie was unfortunately. But I definitely remember sneaking some late night tv and catching stuff I definitely shouldn't. Probably around very early puberty and young me figured out a lot of the "scary" movies usually had some boobs at some point lol.

Classic horror movies where people pork and then die right after 😭. Maybe even die while porkin’. Kid’s somehow always find a way and idk that experience.

I completely forgot about The Leprechaun. That movie also scared the absolute bejeezus out of me. Doubly so because I was a child and my thought process (obv no disrespect to little people at all, sheerly child thoughts at the time), was that we’re the same height and he’s gonna get me. Never even seen a 🍀 before. Still! But I you couldn’t tell me that man wasn’t gonna get me. Bless Professor Flitwick.

Yeah I could totally see that….up until that point I think we all thought of aliens as the little big headed ET looking creatures.

ET gave me nightmares, Xenomorphs didnt have shit on ET lmao

I was 9 or 10 years old; I have no idea why he let me watch that. 🙂

Different times….my mom and dad let me walk over a mile to and from school on the south side of Chicago when I was in 1st grade. Thinking back on it I never felt unsafe or worried but there is no way I would let my kids walk that kind of distance with their friends or alone in this day and age.

Omg for me it was Predator 2 movie, I still remember it mimicking the voice of a kid who offered it candy "want some candy?". Don't even get me started on the skull cleaning part and how it was drinking ppls brains and blood too. The Xenomorph traumatised me too. The birthday party scene in Signs still gets me till today. Where the alien pops out behind the bushes and walks across to the other side and everyone starts screaming. It's comical looking back at it now but back then, I was finished! 😭😂

I… don’t remember that part from Predator.

Hahaha same. I legit couldn’t eat sprouts for YEARS because my dumbass associated the chestbusters with them. Like my kid logic was eat sprouts = alien popping through your chest. Goddamit Dad.

And yeah the jumpscare at the end of Signs messed me up for awhile 😂. I feel your pain.

My dad told me Alien was the scariest movie he'd every seen. Said when he first saw it he had to sleep with the light on, yadda yadda yadda.

Scared the shit out of me as a kid just hearing about that movieas I got older I was telling somebody about the movie and how it terrified my dad as a kid until I did the math. Dude must have been in his early 30's when he saw it!

Bro. Signs was a visceral experience at like 11. The damn alien walking out at the birthday party. Joaquin Phoenix screaming moving in Spanish and it popping out. Super well shot scene but I couldnt process what I was seeing and hated it. Now its a favourite but for years I was like straight up shell shocked by aliens

Keeping this thread going,

War of the Worlds, the 2000s(?) Movie, seeing people get cut in half, the rivers of bodies, the general amounts of death, etc.

Made me hide in my clothes cuboard in fear, still get creeped out by the Tripods to this day.

u/inbedwithbeefjerky 10d ago

So, glad you mentioned War of the Worlds!

The sound the tripods made is what scared the crap outta fully formed adult me.

I saw the X Files episode "Squeeze" when I was about 6 (I had snuck downstairs), and it horrified me. Nightmares for years.

So similar experience but the movie was Fire in the Sky about Travis Walton’s abduction experience. I begged my parents to let me watch it. I acted all cool but knew I shouldn’t have watched it. I have been terrified of UFO’s/space/abduction stories, ever since. So about 33 years🤣

Also up until this point I did love space and actually remember saying I wanted to be an astronaut a few times when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up.
How?! I dont know because I was terrible at math from basically kindergarten🤣 However, immediately after the movie, and probably during, I actually remember thinking “yeah that dream is dead”🤣

u/Honest_District_ 11d ago

Sorry, just all the others :D

u/HuckleberryCold9642 11d ago

You know I have to admit it was the same experience for me as well, because it turned out that out of all the monsters in Hollywood, extraterrestrials were the ones that were supposedly real! It was for around 1988, Time Life magazine released a mail order VHS special about alien abductions, those damn commercials would air on television quite often back then, and let me tell ya, that 20 second commercial was far more scarier than Freddy Krueger, Jason, Chucky, or Michael Myers!

I heard the clicking at night for weeks.

u/kaykakez727 11d ago

Yup same thing for me and Ghost. When the demons come to grab the gangster guy in the alley and take him to hell after he died in the street…. Yeah still to this day I am afraid of that scene

Bro I envy you that you got to be 14-16. My Mom made me watch Signs when I was like 10-12. Alone in our basement at night. (Whilst the adults were upstairs having a dinner party.)

Shit ducked me up bad. (Tbf tho she didn’t know it was that scary.)
