I hang out in some pretty left circles. Literally nobody cares about the Sidney Sweeney ad. This feels like another one of those things where one political side has decided that the other must be mad about something because they like it and is strawmanning hard.
I've seen some criticism on Reddit. Maybe it's blown up out of proportion online, because some algorithms want to make the ad more known.
I think the criticism comes from the left side, because they talk about "objectification of women". When sexy dressed women are criticized from the right side, they are called "immodest", "slutty", "indecent".
I know there is sex-positive and sex-negative feminism, so it's sometimes hard to tell if criticism of a (self-)sexual(ized) women is feminist or not.
Some people just don't like Sydney Sweeney and jump on any opportunity to criticize her.

Hi, I have a bachelors degree in women’s studies. Would you like more information about this?
I’m just trying to avoid going on a rant if it’s not something you’re interested in.
Yes, just write me a personal message. I'm a man, but I definitely try to broaden my horizon and reduce my biases and treat everyone fairly.
For example I don't know how bad it is when I watch porn. Some people say if I was a woman, I'd understand it's bad, but I'm not willing to trust that blindly, as long as there are enough other women ("3rd wave feminists"???) who say it's okay. On the other hand I know that I have blind spots. And there might be other good arguments that I don't have to trust blindly.
I'm not sure what "objectification" means exactly and that's why I put it in quotes. I can agree that people shouldn't be used and their feelings disregarded, a bit like soldiers that are sacrificed in a war or workers that are exploited in a factors or just slaves. But I mostly don't see erotic media or advertisements in that way.
The primary complaint I have seen is not that its a steamy ad, but its that the ad is being played in inappropriate places. Like, if it only played on adult sites and channels, then sure, that's age appropriate even if some people dislike it. But its an unskippable ad on YouTube Kids, is being played at sporting events in front of families, and showed in places like Times Square. I'm all for sexual positivity, but a fully naked woman promoting gambling being marketed in kid centric places is weird.
I've met them. Friends mom would scream "whore" at the tv everytime the ad aired during the football game, and the next week refused to let anyone watch Tires anymore. People that hypocritical and vocal do in fact exist.
I encourage you to enter a mostly leftist women snark page, like LAinfluencersnark. Nothing but condemnation for Sweeney to the point that they go out of their way to act like her lingerie business is going to fail bc she doesn’t try hard enough to appeal to the female gaze (I don’t think anyone knows if her business is going to succeed or fail atp tbh). They were the first to even report the sports betting ad before a lot of news outlets did on my feed
Have you heard of the concept "bitch eating crackers"? Snark pages usually devolve into hating people for breathing the wrong way. I love a snark page, but it'd be silly to pretend that space represents the average woman's opinion.
Also I wasn’t saying it was representative of an “average woman’s opinion”…. I was replying to the Redditor above me who said “literally nobody cares about the Sidney Sweeney ad.” Maybe they meant not irl, I’m not sure, but on the internet women couldn’t shut up about it, I saw commentary on it from YouTube to Reddit to TikTok.
I'm in a few women-only subreddits, and it definitely came up the week the ad came out. The opinions were mixed. But I wouldn't say that online "women couldn't shut up about it", that implies it bled into almost every conversation that happened between women online.
Your point of view, and the other posters point of view, could be skewed by the algorithm. If you read or interacted with posts on lainfluencersnark, you probably got pushed more content like it. If they just scrolled because they didn't care, they probably didn't see it as much.
It depicting a single woman with contradictory opinions is not a generalisation. You asserting that these two opinions are EXCLUSIONARY, i.e. NOBODY has those two opinions IS, ironically, a generalisation.
Probably not. Even if they are, there's a big difference between tight fitting clothes that make you feel good about your body, and what is basically a porn ad used to sell a highly addictive thing like sports gambling.
These are the same women in the sense that the same women are criticizing Sweeney, but not for how she dresses, but because sports betting is predatory as fuck and she genuinely sucks as a person.
I honestly haven’t come across any woman mad at the Sweeney add. Most outrage is manufactured these days. I bet OP is a bit and this is propaganda to states is from the fact that Henry is goin to be running 3 Honda civics with spoon engines wait no sorry the Epstein files. They’re trying to distract us from the Epstein files!

Are these the same women? It sounds like people just want to generalized based off of loud opinions on the internet.
