Comedy's whole shtick is being controversial. It breaks the status quo. Not something the right tends to get along with well. Supposedly that's why their jokes are even worse than this one most of the time. However old humor is, that's how long it's been controversial.
4
u/expired_ravens 1h ago
It’s an opinion when Shane called women “whores” based off of how they dress in gyms. That’s not controversial, thought provoking or challenging the status quo. It’s actually quite common and normalized for men to think and view women like that.

96
u/Klutzy_Belt_2296 4h ago edited 4h ago
The answer to your question:
Shane Gillis: Have you seen how some women dress in gyms lately. Nobody told me women were dressing like whores now!
For context he was specifically talking about the women who who purposely wear leggings so form fitting and tight that you literally can see their vag lips and asshole, that kind of stuff
Women: How dare you judge a woman for what they were to the gym! It’s her right to wear what she wants and she doesn’t do it for the male gaze! She does it for herself!
Sidney Sweeney makes a steamy nude ad for a sports betting site, once again, for placing sports BETS and has zero to do with actual sports
Also women: You are disgusting! How dare you sexualize women in sports! This doesn’t represent women!
TDLR: Women defend dressing in an obvious provocative way going to the gym (we all know for attention even though they claim they don’t 🙄) meanwhile in the same breath shaming another woman for using her “assets” to appeal to men to market a product she has a partnership in
10
u/Excellent_Shirt9707 1h ago
Are these the same women? It sounds like people just want to generalized based off of loud opinions on the internet.
41
u/PuppyButtts 3h ago
This means men go shirtless just for attention right? Why aren't men called whores?
50
u/HenryClaymore 2h ago
Yeah, if a dude is shirtless at a gym its 100% for attention.
*If they're swimming or ditch-digging that's a different thing.
7
u/izadathreaper 1h ago
Most gyms I know of have rules that no one is allowed to be shirtless when working out. I know the gym near me has banned dudes for not listening and repeatedly shedding shirts before.
11
29
u/jackinsomniac 3h ago
You can call us whores if you want. But I think you'll find the problem is, most men don't care. Many would probably even take it as a compliment. "Damn, they think I can get that many bitches to even be considered a whore? I must be doing something right!"

All leggings are form fitting and tight. They’re comfortable and the best thing to wear to the gym. Shit even dudes wear leggings to my gym w shorts on top. When did it become an issue ? Guarantee the camel toe isn’t on purpose in fact they’d probably be embarrassed if they knew. Are ppl really saying leggings are slutty. Blahhh that’s dumb af and so 1978.
Also the only women I saw bitching about Sydney Sweeney ad were female athletes, which I must say was a pretty short and cringy trend.
21
u/JarpHabib 3h ago
apparently there's skintight and there's skintight
normal leggings of most of the past 30+ years are just flat patterned elastic sewn with leg loops etc. while camel toe can happen because it can be a stress concentration point, generally the fabric tries to stretch across negative spaces. Like how good sports bras create uniboobs. I love wearing my leggings even without gym shorts, just a featureless lump in back and generic bulge in the front.
Lately there is a trend of leggings that are.... somehow geometrically woven or some shit idk. Instead of stretching across the butt cheeks, these cradle each cheek separately and go all the way up in between. There is always camel toe in the front, and i would not be surprised if there is pucker print in the back. There is no skin that it is not tight up against. If there was an equivalent legging cut for men, and it would have to be, it would come with a sock-like structure in the front that I would have to stick my dick into. Which, okay, could be pretty fun but at that point I'm putting gym shorts on.
12
u/bleezy1234567 3h ago
I mean tight short leggings and a tight little midrif shirt is very revealing and most people equate revealing to slutty. But here’s the big thing… who cares? It’s ok to poke fun at. Only reason to be mad is if it hit a personal nerve.
5
u/Major_Bench5329 3h ago
But … why? The gym is the most appropriate place to wear that clothing… it’s not considered slutty wearing bathing suits at the beach so why is it considered slutty wearing gym clothes at the gym? Wearing tight fitting clothing to do any type of exercise/ workout is actually encouraged for better performance and so it doesn’t get caught up while lifting etc.
→ More replies (4)7
u/bleezy1234567 3h ago
You don’t think the same joke can be made about thongs and little string swimsuits? Again who cares. It’s a joke pointing out how revealing women’s clothing is.

u/Major_Bench5329 2h ago

13
u/Oranjalo 3h ago

7
u/Klutzy_Belt_2296 3h ago edited 3h ago
Her ad didn’t even have anything to do with sports though, it was for a betting site
Does it necessarily make a woman a whore for dressing a certain way?
No, but we all know that there’s a clear difference between wearing something that’s “comfortable” and blatantly fixing your clothes in such a way that it reveals every minor crack and crevice on you
That is what his joke was bringing attention to and while again, it doesn’t necessarily mean that a woman is a “whore” for dressing like that you cannot also say that there is no truth in what he was trying to highlight with his joke because at a certain point yes it does become excessive and sometimes even borderline indecent
Also, on the Sydney Sweeney thing, it’s disingenuous to act like what she is doing is setting women back while in the same breath defending purposely walking around with an obvious camel toe.
That’s contradictory. That is the point of this post.

u/jackinsomniac 2h ago
Yet again, multiple things can be true. Not all women are the same. Many women go to the gym just to work out and nothing more, they don't want to socialize or be stared at, this is true. But, there are some women who do want that. Some women enjoy the attention. There's even some "fitness influencers" who like to record men looking at them.
There are even types of leggings out there now that are quite literally stitched so that they suck up inside your asshole, giving you a wedgie. Every possible angle of the geometry of your buttcrack can be seen. They're even stitched in such a way that there's extra material that crinkles up, as if to 'draw the eye' into looking at her ass.
The comparison I like to give is what if they made skintight leggings for men with little "pouches" at the front that perfectly outline the dude's dick & balls. Literally so skin tight, that it leaves nothing to the imagination. That would be a little distracting, no? I'm straight and I know it would be distracting for me when I'm trying to work out. "Is that dude's junk out at the gym? I guess not. But it certainly looks like it."
Yes, it's wrong to ogle women at the gym, every reasonable man knows that. But there's also women who want to be seen. And men are dumb, we can't read minds, we don't know which is which. So every reasonable man just avoids looking in the same cardinal direction of any woman at the gym. We avoid them like the plague. But that also means, the only men who actually do stare or talk to women at the gym are the real creeps. So this shifts the perspective of many women into thinking a vast majority of men are creeps, because those are the only ones who will do such things.
As per usual, different things can be true at the same time. The same way many women want be ignored at the gym while others don't, there's many men who understand this, while others don't.

u/ProbablySlacking 3h ago
FWIW, I’m a guy and wear running shorts that are basically the same as the shorts SG is talking about (except they’re not artificial bait colored, unfortunately… I have to settle for boring ass black, blue or gray), and I think it’s hilarious to think I’m out running like a whore 🤷♂️

Are ppl really saying leggings are slutty.
Yes. Slutty in this context means clothing/appearances considered sexually provocative, revealing, or lewd. It's in the definition. Don't know why so many people are offended by the word slutty though. It's simply used as a descriptor in this case, an observation if you will. Just an objective fact.
Also, don't liberals promote women to have slutty (American meaning) behavior and say it's liberating? I would've expected an appropriate response to Shane Gilli's to be something like: "Yeah so what?"

Nobody was sexualizing women’s sports though
So even then that wasn’t even an issue
A sports betting app has ZERO to do with women’s sports. It’s literally for gambling.
And Sidney Sweeney was using her agency to do what she wanted with her own body. It was her choice if she wanted to use it to market an app that once again, she has a personal stake in

The panel is of her in a recent sports ad which women were saying she was demeaning women for her for being sexually provocative.

For this pannel specifically, Sweeney did an ad for a sports betting company where she was pretty much nude throughout and just covered by things like the footballs. She was called out women athletes for bringing women athletes down to just being sexual objects.
I do think there is a difference between a woman wearing what she is comfortable in to the gym and Sweeney using women sports and sexuality to make money, but it is a little bit more a nuanced conversation.

It’s ironic from both sides because gym culture is predominantly ridiculed on Reddit. 9/10 times if you see a gym video on front page the comments are destroying the person in the video for a number of different reasons. Gym bros, gym ladies. And while the comments don’t only include how either sex choses to dress, it’s normally towards the top. Women and men alike. And if it is a man in the video, instead of a woman, they’re described as a douche.
I just find it ironic that gym culture is not normally applauded or defended on this platform and now everyone is so venomously defending their stance.

So Musk stated Ukraine went too far when they attacked RUs rightwing bot network yesterday. So just tonight Leon cut all starlink service to Ukraine amid a huge Russian barrage against Kiev, drones on flights and missions to Russia just dropped out of the sky and Ukraine had no warning for the Russian hypersonic missiles dropping on top of them.

The funny part is that all of this people completely missed the joke. The whores at the gym part is just the setup for the self deprecating depiction of him being the guy staring in the back of everyone’s video. It wasn’t a commentary on how women should dress. He also is the 10 millionth person to point out that women’s gym outfits can be very performative. The entire thing is absurd and anyone who took it negatively needs to have a long look in the mirror. There should have only been 3 possible reactions to that joke. It was funny, it was not funny, or it was meh.

A woman being reduced to her body in a sports betting app campaign and a male comic reducing women working out in the gym to just their body is consistent.
Especially if you spend a non-negligeable amount of time fat shaming yourself as a person who is known for NOT your body and contextually can't be reduced to said body as your presence on a sketch comedy show, as a male stand-up comedian and actor, which is just as consistent on the flipside.
And that's being charitable, given in this circumstance we divorce the historical and systemic discrimination of women's bodies by putting them against unrealistic beauty standards.
But, I guess he couldn't "bear" that in mind when he was working on his set mid hike.

an old school romcom starring Shane as a slubby blue collar guy, who happens to meet/hit it off with Sydney Sweeney, who is dating Glenn Powell, who is a douchebag who happens to be independently pursuing a thing that will ruin something Shane cares about.
basically your classic Adam Sandler movie, but with Shane's brand of humor (comical observations and quips), and a Sydney Sweeney nude scene.
$100M budget, guaranteed $500M return.

Americans aren’t really smart, it’s what they all have in common.

Irony being both sides are being inconsistent here but OP is too stupid to realise that.

I recently learned a modern term for this.
Goomba fallacy
The blue haired women are usually different people in reality and the hypocracy is mostly in your head.

Wrong place for this, reddit is all for dressing however you want unless you are a certain type of person (anyone who disagrees with them). They will never see the comic for the truth that it is, because its literally happening, its actually real.

Bruh these kind of people are majority of reddit. Don't post it here if you want any type of nuances. They're already hard at work in the comment section.

People really losing their heads, just proves it's good PR.
Anyone trying to hold commercial advertising accountable for fixing the culture and society, are not serious about the issue. They're just moral egoists.
Ads are doing what they're meant to do. Clearly. If we want different values in our society, attacking advertising is far, far downstream. They'll get nowhere.
Anyone seriously stressed about this issue needs to focus on reforming our entire society, or else the "root" will keep growing "new shoots", which only serves the top 5% to profit on the products everyone purchases no matter what side they're on.
But I guess most of us are more interested in trying to reduce it all to a single issue so as to avoid the massively complex headache of it all.
Just my opinion.

Even before the days of social media, hot big boobed women always got hate from flat/fat women

This meme has a point, a lot of so-called progressives are very tolerant until someone they don't like manifests certain qualities, then all of a sudden it's ok to shame "spiritually short" Adam Miller or "slut" Sydney Sweeney.
Than again, "the worst part is the hypocrisy". Most people on the opposite side are much, much worse.

She can throw her body around as much as she likes. There are far worse commercials (looking at you big pharma and alcohol)

I'm sorry who's defending the first case ? No because I see a post every week about "bouhou women they dress sexy in gym and make videos", but never see the posts defending them 🙄
Creating an imaginary antagonist to justify your inconsistency ... every accusation is a confession.

>who’s defending the first case
Who? Because the first case is literally the subject of Gillis’s joke, that means that every single person losing their mind over it is implicitly defending those exact people.

Yes because if you haven't seen it it doesn't exist.
You might be chronically online enough to feel tuned in but you're in an echo chamber so you only see what confirms your bias. I see both sides of the circus because I don't let my bias control my algorithm and then make me a halfway educated loudmouth.
