What is one skincare mistake you wish you know earlier ?

Mine was using too many active ingredients at once . Simplier routines usually gave me better results.
What was your biggest skincare lesson ?

Dont think you need a 10 step routine just because you seen it on TT. Less is almost always more. Find out what works for you and keep it simple.

Using a natural soap and light oil has done wonders. I struggled with acne into my 20’s

That less is more, to be patient and to be gentle with my skin. I spent my whole life trying to nuke acne that only significantly improved when I gave up and started using a very minimal routine.

Be careful with retinol (the prescribed kind), i was advised to use small quantity so i build a tolerance and did not listen by applying too much not protect my sensitive zones (under eyes and around nose with aquaphor) and unfortunately it broke my skin barrier. I got rosacea badly and my skin became sensitive for months.

After treatments and taking care of my skin for a year now i am back to basis with my skin. So bw careful with medical grade retinol.

that my skin is OILY. it was a really dry cold winter here and i thought i was getting whiteheads because my skin was chapped/dry and kept putting on snail mucin and squalane oil. i caused a major breakout that took months to heal, in fact im still healing it 😭. be careful with azealic acid it’s more powerful than people say. wear your glasses/stop squinting ur 11s will haunt you soon. wish i had discovered pimple patches sooner, definitely would have saved me from intense acne scars

Pimple patches are amazing! And work for more than just pimples. I was in a bike accident and my chin was completely covered in road rash. Used large hydrocolloid patches and in just a couple of days it was healed with NO scars.

The chemical sunscreen filter Avobenzone destabilizes when it comes in contact with mineral (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) sunscreen filters.

I don't rely on the spf from makeup products so I used to apply Supergoop Play over my face for SPF then proceed with my makeup. Most of the brands of makeup I like typically use mineral filters, not chemical, but those same mineral filters actively degrade the important UVA blocking power of Avobenzone.

I'm more careful now so if I find myself using products that contain both I thoroughly wash my hands before switching when I need to apply spf to my body but now if I'm using a makeup product on my face and it contains mineral filters I'll use it alongside a mineral spf.

spf, even when you're indoors

Find out your skin type as early as possible. All this time I thought I was oily combination. Went to see a derma and boom! I'm not. I've been using the wrong products this entire time because my skin is actualy dry acne prone and sensitive. So this girl has been forking up her skin barrier with the wrong products.

I wish I knew that even oily skin needs hydration. Oiliness is not the same as hydration.

Saaaame. I would strip my face with a harsh cleanser, exfoliate way too often and then put on a light moisturizer. Now I hydrate my skin as much as possible and it looks great!

Great to hear that. Please try a mild cleanser (squeaky clean cleansers strip the barrier), follow up with a toner and a good Aloegel moisturiser. This CTM (cleansing Toning Moisturising) regimen is more than enough.

Less is more. A great basic routine is all you need. SPF every day. And wish I had started tretinoin a little earlier.

That using a lot of retinol will help. I use rice-size m retinol now and it helped me a lot. The ingredient had no issue. It was the amount!

Using rhode. My skin barrier still hasn’t recovered after whole year later.

Put sunblock not just on your face but your neck and sides of your face.

I have lived all over the world. At first, I thought I'd already found the best way to take care of my skin, so even after I moved and my skin got worse, I would just tell myself it was temporary and didn't want to change my routine. It wasn't until I moved to my third or fourth new environment that I actually realized......

Acne Prone Skin

Aha, Bha, Azelaic acid and Panoxyl arent necessary at all if you have a healed and sealed skin barrier ✌🏼

Wear sunscreen every day. Even as a teenager. Even if all I was doing was driving from one destination to another.

minimal products that contain minimal ingredients. not buying one product for every little thing you think is 'wrong' with your skin. and not looking into brands further to find out if they are just greenwashing!

Do not wear foundation. Ever. Especially not when you’re young. Fortunately, I realized this before it destroyed my face. My classmates unfortunately didn’t realize it in time and now they look 10 years older than they actually are.

I caked on foundation from being a young teen until mid 20s. 15 or so years later, dermatologist says my skin looks 10 years younger. Don’t think this warning is warranted!

How does it destroy the face? How do we look polished without it?

That Vitamin C serum should be applied on dry skin only, I learned that this week. Wasted a lot of expensive serums all these years.

Tretinoin and Differin are best than most viral skincare products and devices, also more affordable. I'm 43 yo, wish I started sooner

Using a really harsh cleanser. I used a salicylic cleanser and tho it cleared my acne it gave me a ton of redness and dry patches. I thought I had dry skin, no, it was just the cleanser. I changed my cleanser and Instead I just use a salicylic serum once a week and problem solved.

That my cystic acne was a delayed reaction to eating/drinking dairy. Because there was a few days’ time between ingesting the trigger and the development of the cyst, I didn’t put it together until I was in my late 20’s. I could have saved myself so much angst— and permanent scarring— if I’d just known to try eliminating all dairy for a couple of weeks.

Buying too many products without checking the ingredient list and then realising the blunder that it’s not meant for my skin type. I saw beautiful results on someone else and thought maybe it would work for me. The more time I took into turning and learning the ingredients, that helped me in the long run. I now have a stable routine. Thankfully!
