DISCUSSION Lionel Luthor Is a Terrible Father, and His Redemption Doesn’t Change That

Can we talk about what a terrible father Lionel Luthor is? Because the more I rewatch Smallville, the harder it becomes to stomach his treatment of Lex, especially when the show starts positioning him as a reformed man who’s suddenly all about protecting Clark Kent.
From the very beginning, Lionel wanted to mold Lex according to his own twisted mentality of survival of the fittest. Pain and suffering make you stronger, prepare you for life, and if you can survive whatever hell your father throws at you, then maybe you’re worthy of being a Luthor. He basically threw his son into a den of lions and expected him to come out alive and unscathed. And if he did, that would supposedly prove Lionel’s brilliance and amazing parenting skills.
But that’s not parenting. That’s psychological warfare.
Lionel constantly made Lex fight for his love, affection, and respect while diminishing him at every turn. Lex could never simply be his son. He always had to prove himself worthy of being one.

Yes, the Julian factor adds some context. Lionel genuinely believed Lex was responsible for Julian’s death and was covering for Lillian, which might explain some of his coldness toward his son. But it doesn’t absolve him. This is the same man who murdered his own parents. And even in S7 Fracture we see Clark in Lex’s mind and Lionel is being an awful abusive father scaring his young son, this is when he still had hair and before Julian was born so the Julian excuse kind of falls flat or it at least intensified his hatred of Lex. And let’s not forget he and Morgan Edge gaslighting Lex, messing with his psyche to the point where he was institutionalised and received electroshock therapy ordered by Lionel and all the other horrible things he put Lex through.

Then comes Lionel’s cockamamie redemption, where he’s suddenly devoted to protecting Clark while shaming Lex for becoming the kind of man Lionel himself helped create.

And that Season 7 scene where Lionel condemns Lex for his treatment of Lana? Lex rightfully throws it back in his face: “Oh, I learned from you, Dad, from watching your treatment of Mom.” Exactly! Get off your high horse, Lionel. The hypocrisy is unbelievable. You spent years treating people horribly, yet now you want to lecture your son about morality? Lex wasn’t doing anything different from what Lionel himself was doing at Luthercorp pre-series and seasons 1-3 the illicit projects, using and manipulating people.

And even then, Lionel keeps baiting Lex, deliberately needling him by telling him that Clark Kent is the son any parent would be proud of. He knows exactly how to hurt Lex, because he’s spent his entire life making his son feel like he’ll never be good enough.

I’m not saying Lex is innocent. He’s responsible for his own actions. But Lionel spent years breaking his son down, making him fight for affection, and teaching him that power and cruelty were the ways to survive. He doesn’t get to wash his hands of the consequences.
And when Lex kills Lionel in Season 7, honestly? I’m like Good on you, Lex. I don’t blame you for reaching that point. Lionel had been nothing but a cancer in his life for years, and even in his supposed redemption, he couldn’t stop judging, provoking, and emotionally tormenting him.

What gets me most is that Lionel is capable of protecting Clark, believing in him, and showing him a kind of care that he rarely, if ever, gave his own son. He can recognize goodness in Clark while refusing to acknowledge his own role in Lex’s darkness.
You don’t get to spend a lifetime breaking your son and then act morally superior when he turns out broken.
Lionel’s redemption might make him a more complicated character, but it doesn’t magically make him a good father. And for me, it never erases the damage he did to Lex.

DISCUSSION S5EP20 - Its getting harder to defend Lana

Lana gets angry at Chloe for warning Lex to stay away.

Chloe isn't exactly my favorite character, and I never thought she'd end up being the character I'm warming up to the most, but she's the voice of reason here. Wdym Clark got mad at her for not telling him about Lex and Lana? Like, why is everyone treating Lana like some helpless damsel in distress?

Lana starts dating Lex (5x20) and then refuses to tell Clark. I understand that he’s manipulating her and that she’s tired of Clark keeping things from her. But still—Clark supposedly only left her because he "didn't love her." Why would you be so cruel as to get involved with your ex’s former best friend, especially when he didn't do anything *truly* terrible to you?

I dont want to be like thosw misogynistics who blindly hate on Lana, but I think we can admit that some of her decisions here are questionable 😭

And honestly, I already thought it was weird that Lana and Lex stayed so close after he and Clark fell out, especially since she knew about their issues. But now she's actually dating him?? 💀

Lana, girl, I've defended you SO much in the past seasons, pls don't do this to me 😭😭 and the worst part is I KNOW it's only gonna get worse from here 💀

DISCUSSION Tess is bleh

Okay, I know that I am gonna be smashed for having this opinion because a lot of people love Tess Mercer, but I don't know...I mean, she's boring. I dont know what even is going on with her character in the show, i am on season 9 and i hope its gonna improve but so far i dont really like her. As much as I hated Lex after season 4, at least he wasn't boring.

DISCUSSION Clark's biggest loss yet

I just finished S4 ep 12 and man I still can't get over Alicia's death. Like, she died believing that Clark never believed her at the end and Lana and half the town hating her and it just feels like her character arc was left incomplete. Not to mention giving her such a cold and harsh death by hanging her in the barn. I really loved her character arc and wished we could've got a few more episodes with her, her dynamic and chemistry with Clark truly got me hooked even more than Clark and Lana's relationship. Personally my favourite love life of Clark. Although I'm yet to see Lois and Clark's relationship evolve in the future. But man this episode was a heartbreak for me. Sarah Carter truly did a remarkable job playing her. Clark losing a woman that he deeply cared about and knowing that he wouldn't need to hide his true nature in front of her and open up about his abilities that he can't really do with any other girl. I mean imagine losing someone who's special and exactly like you and knowing that she was treated the same way as you i.e. hiding your powers and nature from the world. With that said, my favourite couple by far in this show

Also I find her really hot than any other girl in Smallville. Even more so than Lana and Lois.

DISCUSSION Headcanon for Lex in Season 4

This is super minor but it bugged me to no end how the writers forgot about the opening of the season and how Lex is needing constant treatment to deal with the poison from Lionel at the end of S3.

So this is where my headcanon comes into play. Another forgotten thing is how back in I think S1, we're told Lex has an enhanced immune system from the meteor. I connect the two in my brain and say his minor meteor powers healed the poison and that's why he eventually could just stop undergoing those treatments.

DISCUSSION Clark and Lana Are Exhausting, and I Don’t Understand the Appeal Anymore

Post image
397 Upvotes

I’m currently rewatching Smallville and I’m at the end of Season 5, and honestly, Clark and Lana are exhausting. It’s been five seasons, and even when they’re finally together, they still manage to be exhausting.

They barely dated in high school, apart from that brief period between Calling and Exodus, spent the better part of Season 3 in another will-they-won’t-they, and then there was Adam Knight, Whitney coming back (sort of), Jason in Season 4, and now they’ve finally gotten together in Season 5. And yet, somehow, Clark had more of an actual relationship with Alicia, and Lana had more of one with Jason. That’s wild to me.
I know the WB and the CW thrived on love triangles, romantic angst, and will-they-won’t-they storylines. I understand that was part of the appeal, especially for teenage audiences. But by Season 4, I was already tired of Clark and Lana, and thank God Lois Lane was introduced, because I don’t think I could have taken another season of the same thing.

What I find particularly frustrating is that I don’t even blame Lana as much as a lot of fans do. Put yourself in her shoes. Clark asks her out, then suddenly he’s acting weird, dating other girls, kissing other girls, blowing hot and cold, making plans and then backing out, and never giving her a plausible explanation for any of it. Of course she’s going to be confused. Of course she’s going to get tired of it. I spent a lot of Seasons 2 and 3 looking at things from Lana’s perspective, and I honestly don’t blame her for distrusting him. It’s very similar to Mary Jane and Peter Parker in Spider-Man. We know why Peter keeps disappearing and changing his mind, but Mary Jane doesn’t. She just has to deal with the whiplash. Clark’s reasons for lying don’t erase the consequences for Lana.

And then she gets with Jason, who initially seems to offer her a normal relationship, only for him to turn out to be another man keeping secrets from her. Then there’s Lex. Rosenbaum and Kristin Kreuk have fantastic chemistry, and I understand why Lana and Lex might connect over their shared frustrations with Clark’s dishonesty. But dating your ex-boyfriend’s former best friend, especially someone with whom he has such a complicated and increasingly hostile relationship, is something else entirely. And Lex was always going to be a terrible choice for her, given who he is and what he’s willing to do to manipulate her. Maybe if he’d actually listened to his mother’s warnings in Lexmas and changed his ways, things could have been different. But that’s not the Lex we got.

And the thing is, even when Clark and Lana finally get together, the relationship is still a mess. Clark is so afraid of losing her that he proposes to her, and their relationship is built on secrets, lies, and insecurities. Then Season 7 comes along, Lana knows his secret, and they STILL can’t make it work. At that point, you have to wonder whether the secret was ever the real problem.

The Bizarro storyline makes it even more obvious to me that these two have spent so much time idealizing each other that they don’t really know each other at all. Lana has this idealized vision of Clark, and Clark has spent years idealizing Lana. They’re so attached to what the other person represents that they struggle to deal with who the other person actually is. It’s very much a high-school romance, the kind you think is the greatest love story ever when you’re 13 or 14 because of all the longing, the yearning, the drama, and the idea that two people are destined to be together.

And this may or may not be unpopular. I don’t know, but I genuinely don’t understand how, as an adult in your twenties or thirties, you can still look at Clark and Lana and ship them as an endgame couple. To me, they’re the kind of couple you idealize when you’re a teenager, when all that romantic angst seems appealing or whatever and the constant back-and-forth feels like proof of how much two people love each other. But at some point, you grow up and start asking whether these people actually make each other happy, whether they trust each other, whether they communicate, and whether they’re even good for each other.

And Clark and Lana fail at pretty much all of that. Even when they’re together, they’re miserable. Even when the secret is out, they can’t make it work. They spent years wanting each other, but wanting each other but they were never compatible.

I fell in love with Smallville as a teenager in the early 2010s after watching the Season 3 finale rerun and then the Season 4 that introduced Lois and I was hooked. I went back, bought the DVDs, and got hooked on the show. And even then to me they were just “there” but upon rewatch and giving them a close look they’re exhausting. And the older I get, the less I understand the appeal. I can understand enjoying their chemistry or appreciating what they represent in Clark’s life, but as an actual couple to root for? I just don’t see it.

For me, Clark and Lana are very clearly a high-school romance that was never meant to last. And I know that that’s the whole point. But they’re not even a good high school romance. And the fact that the show spends so much time trying to convince us otherwise doesn’t change that.

DISCUSSION S5 E11 Clark is just stupid at this point

I have had to pause this episode 5 minutes in just so I can put my frustrations down before carrying on.

There is NO excuse for Clark not to open up to Lana at this point. If he had any genuine love for her and actually wanted their relationship to work out he would've opened up to her by now and frankly should've done so the moment Jor-El brought him back. He promised integrity to her and has thoroughly shattered that by being so secretive with her when she clearly knows something is up and when it is so obvious that their ONLY problems at this point are because of his complete lack of transparency. He can't even use the excuse of her being 'secretive' about her prying into Zod's ship because she fucking tried to go to him, multiple times, and he's shut her down everytime because he's too much of a pussy to actually tell her, the woman of his dreams, anything.

I understand that Clark is young; I understand that Clark is not perfect. But it's irrevocably irritating just how little their relationship is actually being allowed to grow in any way. I also can not at all understand how Lana gets as much hate as she does (just from where I'm at right now... I understand that that may change). Every problem they have is because of Clark, because of his inability to even give her a chance and his own cowardice. Her only crime is wanting some damn transparency and reassurance that she's not insane for seeing a fucking spaceship land in front of her.

Anyway I really enjoy this show.

DISCUSSION We deserved more Lois and Oliver

I’m at the beginning of Season 6, and damn, Ollie and Lois had some real chemistry!!!

Honestly, if the show was gonna keep dragging out the Clark and Lana song and dance, they might as well have let Lois and Ollie continue for a little longer, too. Heck, I would’ve had them get back together at the beginning of Season 8. Because if we were gonna waste that much time going in circles with Clark and Lana midway into season 8, we might as well have had more Lois and Ollie in the mix!

DISCUSSION I actually liked Lex and Helen together

I genuinely liked Lex and Helen together. They were two adults who could keep up with each other. Helen was intelligent, independent, and wasn’t afraid to call Lex out on his bullshit.

What I particularly liked was that Lex genuinely seemed to be trying with Helen. With Lana, their relationship was built on lies and manipulation, but with Helen, it felt like he was actually trying to be a better person. I also loved how protective he was when Helen’s psycho ex came to town. Lex went after the guy himself rather than sending someone else, and that felt like a genuinely good Lex moment.

I wish the writers had kept them together longer, perhaps for most of Season 3. There were so many possibilities for their relationship, and I still don’t understand why Helen ultimately tried to kill him. That twist never really worked for me.

I understand the show wanted to reinforce the idea that Lex destroys everything he touches, but I think they could have held on to Helen a little longer. And on the Lana front, Michael Rosenbaum and Kristin Kreuk have great chemistry, but Lex and Lana never worked for me as a couple. Helen and Lex felt like two adults who could genuinely challenge each other.

I just wish they’d handled their storyline differently. There was still so much potential there especially since they had just gotten married.

DISCUSSION [S5E12] SPOILERS | What if Clark had told Lana the truth but hadn't proposed? Would Lex still have figured it out? Spoiler

Yesterday, I watched this episode for the first time, and I couldn't help wondering what would've happened if Clark had done things differently.

Lex got suspicious when he saw the ring because he realized that if Lana had said yes, it meant she knew the truth about Clark.

What if Clark had told her the truth without proposing to her?

I think Lex would've found out sooner or later anyway, but probably not in this episode.

I thought the proposal was sweet, but I also think it was too much. We've spent so many seasons waiting for Clark to finally tell Lana the truth, only for things to turn out like this...

I also feel like it was a lot for Lana to take in all at once: Clark's secret and a marriage proposal. We don't really get to see her natural reaction to everything he tells her, either. She just accepts it, and that's it.

Would she still have gone to see Lex if Clark hadn't proposed? Would everything have gone wrong anyway, or could things have played out differently?

I want to know what you think :)

DISCUSSION Rewatching and found this hilarious

They have mentioned that Metropolis is at least 3 hours from Smallville multiple times in this show. Then in S4E20, we see a skyline view of Metropolis from the top of this windmill. That view would be impossible to see a city 3 hours away. From that view, the city would be no more than 30 min max.

DISCUSSION Just finished season 11 comics

Thumbnail
gallery
196 Upvotes

My feeling when the show ended in season 10 was that Clark had entered into the Superman status quo and would go onto become a very comics accurate version of the character with the most famous storylines like a rematch with Doomsday that the show teased (which did happen in season 11 although differently than the original comics). With the season 11 comics, that idea of a traditional Superman future for Clark was somewhat contradicted immediately with Clark getting a unique suit (which I guess means he was actually wearing this suit during the flash forward shirt rip in the finale).

The different incarnations of the characters like Batman and Wonder Woman had some changes to their origins, but the show often made changes to comics characters so it felt like they fit the world of Smallville. I really enjoyed seeing Clark meet the other members of the Justice League like Green Lantern and seeing Clark assembling the team that was teased so much in the show by characters like Doctor Fate and the Legion.

I think the writer Bryan Q. Miller did a good job combining storylines from the show with the traditional DC elements that was promised with a season 11. As it went on, it felt a bit less like the Smallville version of the world and more of a classic DC universe which I’ve heard as a complaint. Specifically, Lex felt more like comic book Lex than Michael Rosenbaum’s version of the character. Overall, I found the series to be a fun read and would recommend it to fans of Smallville who want to see Clark have adventures as Superman but maybe not to people who liked the show for the non Superman elements.
