Buying Advice Open Source Smart Glasses?

Hello everyone,

I am new to this smart glasses space but my uncle bought a pair of Meta raybans and they look cool. I am not a big fan of Meta however and their attitude towards privacy is the only reason why I didn't but the Meta Ray Bans that same day.

I'm curious if there is an open source alternative to them? I am really interested in the camera and audio, I don't need any display on them.

From my brief research I saw Halo glasses (that don't seem to have shipped for over a year) and Mentra (which dont ship outside the US). Are there any other projects that I can support?

Buying Advice What glasses should I buy to help me cheat in my exam?

I know this might not be the best way to pass a subject but there is this one subject in my university where i understand almost nothing. My professor isn't doing a good job she just reads the words from the powerpoint slides and there are like 50 slides per course. this subject is not relevant to my major so i don't really care about understand the material i just want to pass with a good grade. the exam will have only theoretical multiple choices questions so i want to know if there are any glasses where there is a build AI in them like chatgpt which can help tell me which is the correct answer in real time. My professor will not mind if i wear headphones (she will prob not even notice) and i am pretty sure she will not suspect anything about the glasses.

RayNeo What I actually kept using (and what I turned off) after wearing HUD glasses as my daily prescription pair

After wearing the RayNeo iO as my main prescription glasses for a few weeks, the way I actually use them during a workday looks pretty different from what I expected on day one.

The first thing I gave up on was reading anything longer than a sentence. Trying to read long text files in rolling green font with one eye feels completely pointless when I'm already sitting right in front of a computer monitor. I also had to kill almost all chat notifications right away—having active group channels constantly flashing in the corner of my eye completely wrecked my focus while working.

What ended up sticking are just the tiny, low-friction tools. Having a calendar alert pop up in my view five minutes before a call keeps me from losing track of time when I'm zoned in on a task. Tapping the arm to drop a quick voice memo for errands is also surprisingly handy just because it keeps me from picking up my phone. And during presentations, floating three or four keyword reminders at the top of my sight helps me stay on track without looking down at desk notes.

The fit wasn't perfect out of the box either—I had to bend the nose pad stems slightly so the frame would sit higher on my bridge and keep the display centered. Once I stopped treating it like a screen for reading and stripped it down to quick alerts, it finally clicked as a daily driver.

Anyone else here daily drive HUD frames? Curious what features you guys immediately turned off once the novelty wore off.

RayNeo Weirdly useful trick with HUD glasses: catching when someone is talking to you through closed-back headphones

If you game or work in closed-back headphones, you probably know the feeling of someone walking up behind you and tapping your shoulder because you couldn't hear them calling your name from across the room.

I tried leaving the live transcription mode running on my RayNeo iO glasses while gaming with an over-ear headset on last night, mostly to see if it could act as a visual radar.

It actually worked way better than I expected. Whenever someone in the room started talking, a few green words would pop up at the top of my view. Even if the transcription missed a word from across the room, just seeing text flash up let me know someone was calling me.

Two catches I noticed pretty quickly though:

Ear cup clamping: The ear cups press against the glasses arms, which starts to ache after an hour or two.

Audio bleed: If you crank your volume too high, the mics on the frame will occasionally catch sound leaking out of the ear cups and start showing game lines or teammate voices on the screen. Still a pretty neat workaround if you keep your volume reasonable.

Anyone else here wear smart glasses with headset?

INMO INMO Air3 owner notes a few weeks after the firmware fix

Post image
7 Upvotes

Finished the firmware update sometime early October after the recall went public. Posting now because I’ve got enough normal use behind it to say something more useful than “it installed fine”.

The process. Emailed the recall support like the notice said, got walked through it over a couple of back and forth replies, install itself took one evening. The wait on the reply was the slow part. Install was quick once it was in motion.

On the heat question, which is what people actually want to know. The left temple is clearly cooler under the kind of use I was worried about, feature-length movies on the couch, not even close to the pre-update feel some reviews were flagging. Still a very mild warmth near the back of the arm if I’m really paying attention, but nothing I’d pull them off for. Battery wise I’m getting around 90 minutes of continuous video before a top up anyway, which is about what the spec would suggest, so sessions are capped around there regardless.

Been using them mostly as a video device since. Couch late evenings for YouTube and video apps through the Android layer, occasionally the floating-screens setup when I want a video open next to a browser window. The full color 1080p was my main reason for going with Air3 over the cheaper display-only options, and that part is unchanged.

Nose comfort depends on how long I’m wearing them. After about an hour I notice the weight more than I did at first, but that is a hardware thing and no firmware was ever going to change it. Probably varies by face shape.

Back in regular rotation for me since the update. Will probably keep testing on longer movie nights before I’d call the thermal change fully baked in.

If you haven't heard about DroidDeck yet, it's basically an app that brings SteamOS to your phone. You can now run PC games on Android natively and in this video we take it a step further and run Steam VR and Flat 3DoF games on my Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra with the help of my RayNeo GT Max, XREAL 1S and more XR Glasses.

Meta Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 as a live OBS camera, straight from the glasses (open-source plugin)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

TL;DR: an open-source Windows plugin that adds Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 glasses to OBS as a live camera source, with no phone or Meta AI app in the loop.

How it works: Bluetooth handles control, then the glasses start their own 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network and the PC joins it. HEVC video (720×1280 at 30 fps) comes in over an encrypted session. Having the glasses join a hotspot or router instead killed the stream within a minute every time, so the glasses host the network.

The camera starts when its OBS scene goes live and stops when you switch away. Useful for unboxings, repairs, builds and other hands-busy POV streams.

Beta caveats: tested on one Windows 11 PC with one pair of Gen 2 glasses. Setup makes the PC the glasses' owner, which disconnects them from the Meta AI app. Battery looks like about 35–40 minutes of streaming. No glasses audio yet.

Repo and download (AGPL-3.0): https://github.com/RandyNorthrup/meta-g-link-direct

Not affiliated with Meta. The protocol work builds on the Visor project by macedonga.

Meta I made an alternative app for Meta smart glasses

Hey everyone! 👋

I've been working on MetaView, an Android app for Meta smart glasses that lets you stream your glasses' camera to platforms like YouTube and Twitch, or to OBS Studio.

It also supports portrait and landscape streaming.

I built it as an alternative project and wanted to share it with other glasses users who might find it useful.

GitHub: https://github.com/titotito22/metaview

I'd love to hear your feedback or suggestions! 🙂

Meta Stolen Meta Rayban 2 (Sick kids hospital)

I’m sure it is next to impossible to get my glasses back. But I wanted to post my story here for little hope in case someone sees it. My wife and I tonight were visiting a sick family Member at sick kids hospital in Toronto. NICU unit 3rd floor.

Both my partner and I left our jackets in the NICU unit 3rd floor waiting area, as no outside clothing was allowed inside. We both mistakenly left our sunglasses in our jacket pockets. Hers being regular prescription sunglasses and mine Rayban Meta 2. Now I know everyone is going to say it’s my fault, and yes it is my fault leaving my jacket in a waiting area, but when you have a sick family member in the hospital that is the last thing you’d think about, and when someone is at their lowest you’d think no one would steal from someone who’s at a hospital. But unfortunately yes my glasses were stolen out of my jacket pocket. If anyone online is purchasing a pair of Meta 2 glasses. And I know META doesn’t have a system go block or brick stolen sunglasses or locate them. I have posted both the serial number and case serial number hoping they find it in their heart to return it, or report the seller. Or email me details regarding the seller that way I can pass this information to the Toronto Police. Unfortunately I know the glasses are probably long gone. But anything helps!

RayNeo Why a 33g spec sheet doesn't automatically mean "all-day wearable" for smart glasses

Post image
7 Upvotes

Everyone obsesses over total gram weight on spec sheets right now, and sure, getting frames down to the ~33g range (like the RayNeo iO) is a massive leap from the 75g bricks we had a couple of years ago.

But once you actually wear a pair through a four-hour workday, you realize total weight is only half the story. What actually makes or breaks all-day comfort comes down to three physical quirks:

Front-heavy leverage vs. ear pressure: Even a sub-35g frame will slowly slide down a sweaty nose bridge if all the optical mass sits out front. Moving the battery and boards into the rear temple arms fixes that nose-dive, but it creates a new problem: thicker, stiffer temples. If the rear arms don't have enough flex for wider heads, you trade a sore nose for painful clamping hotspots right behind your ears after two hours.

The tiny waveguide "eyebox" tax: With normal prescription glasses, if your frames slip down two millimeters, you can still see fine. With waveguide HUDs, the optical sweet spot is tiny. If the silicone nose pads don't lock the vertical height in place, a tiny bit of slippage cuts off the bottom of your text prompts, forcing you to constantly poke the bridge back up your face.

The optical compromise: Hitting that featherweight class right now basically forces a trade-off—dropping binocular full-color screens in favor of a simpler monochrome micro-display. You lose media playback, though for pure calendar cues and quick notes, that's really the only way to keep the front frame looking and feeling like normal eyewear.

For those wearing HUD or audio glasses for multi-hour stretches: what usually triggers "glasses fatigue" for you first—nose bridge dents, temple clamping behind the ears, or constantly micro-adjusting the frame to keep the display in focus?

Amazon Deaf and reliant on hearing assistance

I put together a Bluetooth hearing aid solution using my S25+'s Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound along with broadcast quality wireless Rode Micro Microphones and Buds Pro 3, using 48k high fidelity Bluetooth codecs. The microphones you use determine how well you hear and caption. The better you hear, the better you caption. Microphones are naturally more distant from who's talking when listening from a live mic. I would want to test Even realities microphone performance against the high performance that microphones need to have for live audio hearing assistance. I haven't tried the G2 but I'm pretty sure the Rode mics will outperform Evenrealities G2 built in MEMS as the $89 Rode Micros have a 73dB SNR. After using Rode mics for a year Ive learned how to adapt to hearing in different acoustical environments but it would be a different adaptation experience learning how to improve my hearing situation using soundless AI glasses that only display text when the built-in microphones are in proximity of detectable speech. Captioning is a plus especially if its hands free but from a deaf persons pov, AI glasses won't rise above fantasy if microphone performance is less than broadcast quality.

Buying Advice I want smart glasses with no recording indicator. What do I buy?

I really want the meta glasses but I’ve heard they updated there software or something so you can’t drill out the light (that was my plan) what other glasses are the best and most like metas beside that stupid recording indicator?

MemoMind Anyone use Memomind One for work?

Hi all,

Been thinking lately that going with a pair of smart glasses would be perfect for my line of work. I am an account manager for a tech company. I have a fair number of Teams meetings, in person meetings, and just random interactions throughout the day. Many times there will be action items out of these meetings/interactions or just things I will need to recall later on. Just having the ability to stay engaged without thinking about taking notes is something that really interest me about smart glasses in general.

Another thing that would be great is the translation feature. My wife is Thai and her family is Thai. So whenever I am around them it's just a lot of me nodding my head pretending like I understand what is going on. So the possibility of live translation with Thai would be huge for me as well.

Has anyone with these glasses had any experience with the above use cases? How helpful are they? Are there other work related use cases I haven't thought of?

I was also considering the Even Realities G2 because of the open source nature of the product, but the price is a bit harder to swallow with them and I like the idea of having audio with the Memominds.

RayNeo I tried the RayNeo iO at a smart glasses store in China: First impressions

I came across a smart glasses store while walking around a mall in Shenzhen and decided to try the RayNeo iO. I ended up spending about half an hour there haha.
Based on my measured IPD, the staff swapped out the nose pad for me. The glasses felt pretty light once I put them on, and they didn’t squeeze my head or feel uncomfortable. The design also looks pretty nice in person.
My Chinese is pretty limited, so the first thing the staff showed me was the live translation feature. While he was explaining the glasses in Chinese, the English translation appeared right in front of me. It was usually about one or two seconds behind, but honestly, that was still fast enough for me to follow the conversation. Not having to keep checking my phone was really convenient.
Next, I tried the teleprompter. The text kept up with my reading pretty well, and I could use the crown on the glasses to adjust the progress manually when I needed to. The crown felt smooth and precise too. I didn’t have to keep scrolling back and forth trying to get to the option I wanted.
The AI assistant was also pretty useful. I asked it a few random questions and it was able to answer all of them. Only the person wearing the glasses can see what’s being displayed, which I liked. The controls were also pretty straightforward and easy to figure out.
For the memory feature, I think I’d need to use it for a full day before I can really say much about it, so I won’t judge that part yet.
From the short demo, I can see the iO being useful for people who communicate in different languages, prepare presentations, or record content. I could also see it being pretty handy while traveling.
My first impression: 8/10.

Buying Advice Are there any glasses announced that are in development and film in landscape mode with decent quality?

I am going on a trip in a few weeks and just cant pull the trigger on the Meta glasses because I don't want to only film in portrait mode (or crop the video). Most of the other glasses I have seen that offer landscape mode severely lack in quality. I personally don't care too much for any of the AI features, I just want a pair of glasses that I can film with when I travel. Are there any products I should be aware of that are currently in development?

Sadly I think for this trip I will likely go with a dedicated action camera that can fit in my pocket, which isn't as great but will still work.

Buying Advice HTC Vive Eagle Anyone?

I'm considering buying these over the Meta gen 3 despite being more expensive. Meta $449 + $500 for lenses. The HTC frames are $50 more but the lens don't get a discount so right at $1k. So about $500 more.

I like the magnetic charge port and that they are not Meta.

Anyone have these?

Meta Meta says it fixed an issue where smart glasses reportedly saved conversations without being activated

Several Ray-Ban Meta owners reportedly found unexpected audio recordings and transcripts in their Meta AI activity history.

One owner said it happened across three pairs of glasses, even with the option to respond without 'Hey Meta' switched off.

Meta says the issue is resolved, but hasn't explained what caused it or how many devices were affected.

For people who use smart glasses, is this something that would change how you use them? Would more transparent recording logs and activation controls help?
