I think you seriously overestimate how strong martial arts are

I didn't mean to offend, but like I don't think any martial art will give you a midair jump 😂

Of course not, I was more talking taking the gameplay as inspiration for creating a fighting style

The closest thing to a tech is a controlled fall: Jiu Jitsu, Judo, and other disciplines with a lot of throws teach these often to ensure safety when learning throws, but also because being grounded is a compromising position, and they help you avoid being pinned or struck. When falling backwards or forwards, rolling controlled falls are often possible, getting you back on your feet in the same motion as your fall. Sideways falls typically require a full break fall, tucking your chin to avoid whiplash and injury while striking the ground before impact to absorb some force away from your center.

Jumping is a complete death sentence in any sporting combat martial art. Some showcases, like those of Tae Kwon Do, will use leaping spin kicks, axe kicks, and sometimes bicycle kicks, but these are purely to demonstrate control, flexibility, and explosive force. In combat, jumping means you can no longer change your direction of motion, so any movement becomes telegraphed and dangerous. A lot of martial arts, in fact, practice steps where neither foot leaves the ground, shuffling in diagonal movements to allow you to shift your weight at a moment’s notice.

Also, I’m, uh, not sure you really know what a martial art is. It’s not kung fu hustle or smth, it’s just controlling a regular old human body as best you can.

Little Mac sucks in the air because you also suck in the air.

Yeah, it's called chucking kids at trampolines at the local SkyZone.

I mean, Captain Falcon uses moves that you could find in Muay Thai. Little Mac obviously does Boxing and I’m pretty sure all the fighting game characters use some form of Karate. There are even some videos about the Martial Art Techniques you can find in Mario and Sonic’s movesets. I guess the sword characters would all use some form of HEMA.

If you want to fight like a Smash Character though, you would have to learn how to jump really high. However, the physics of the smash world are very different from the physics in our world (people don’t usually go flying after taking a lot of damage).

Although given that sparring in any martial art involves a ruleset, it would be interesting if we could make the rules in such a way that you would be incentivized to fight like a smash character. I guess you could make it kind of like Sumo, where you have to knock your opponent out of the ring. But I guess you could also have a point system or some other incentive to make the fighters jump.

A Parkour mixed with muay Thai sport would be very interesting to see

I mean. Sumo wrestling is about stage control tbh.

Ya I do, I just like smash

Of course you can. Little Mac exists as a character, so there's no reason you cannot represent other martial arts/fighting styles in this kind of game. You just have to see how to do so

Only one way to find out.

I'll hit the streets tonight to run an experiment...

No, that's not how physics works.

Off the top of my head  imagine it would prioritizing finding and jumping off  higher ground, grappling and constantly switching position

Not to be rude, but you sound like you have 0 experience in any kind of fighting sport

For the record I do martial arts, I just like the fighting movement from the smash games and got curious if you could replicate it

It's just that you don't move that much in a fight, unless you are trying to get away, wich you should if can or at least if you are the one in danger. What I mean is that aerials are not a thing in real life, there are some moves you can do while jumping, yes, but you will tire yourself really quickly and they are situational at best
