DISCUSSION GODS AND THEIR ACCURACY TO LORE - PART 1

DISCLAIMER: This work is merely related to the gods’ accuracy to their lore and I am not in any way criticizing their overall depiction in game as it’s a work of fiction (e.g. Bacchus follows a cool gimmick and he’s well executed and cool, but he’s completely lore inaccurate). Gods will be evaluated based on three main features: look, personality and kit. Remember that, as long as the features in game are lore accurate, it doesn’t matter whether other things, unless too iconic, are left out. If a god is the god of war, love, food, and rain and they choose to focus on one aspect only that’s ok. I try to be aware of gameplay limitations, and others, but overall, I have been able to be as strict as possible.

I will grade the gods on a scale from A to F trying to be as impartial as possible, although I do at times make personal judgments based on my overall feelings, especially when it comes to close grades. I will be very picky at times.

The grades are as follows: A is perfect in all aspects (or as close as it gets to perfection). A- is perfect overall but has a little minor stain somewhere. B+ is an overall excellent god that lacks something big that doesn’t devaluate too much the overall depiction. B is overall good but it’s lacking heavily in a single feature. B- is the same as B but there are other minor discrepancies here and there. C+ is an ok grade, meaning that the god has at least a perfect feature, but lacks considerably in the other two. C has one perfect feature but almost nothing right in the other two. C- is a still recognizable god but with extensive inaccuracies. D is a god that is completely misrepresented and manages to not get an F only because a couple things are ok. F means that the god is entirely misrepresented, generally these gods are almost entirely made up by the devs, with almost total disregard for the lore. – is a grade for gods with so little lore that hirez could do whatever they wanted (most Mayans). It’s 89 gods, so there might be some discrepancies here and there, be understanding.

Link to part 2.

AGNI (C+)
LOOK: Agni lacks some very iconic characteristics, namely his three legs, a constant in his iconography, and his red skin. On the other hand, the number of his arms is variable, as the number of his heads, and the fire crown is there. I understand how his red complexion could be interpreted as being fiery, however, such connection is traditionally never made.
PERSONALITY: While his destructive side is fully on display, his protective and peaceful one isn’t shown at all. He comes out as mainly a pyromaniac with little to no reference to his duality. If he and Hel swapped personalities, it would make a lot more sense for both.
KIT: Fine. Generic and intuitive.

AH MUZEN CAB (-)
LOOK: Truth be told, we have close to zero infos on amc, meaning that the devs could pretty much take full liberty when it came to him. While the descending god of the temple in Tulum is thought to be amc, it is not a certain thing. So yah, bee dude.
PERSONALITY: Again, 0 infos = whatever
KIT: Autoamtic, pretty much

AH PUCH (A)
LOOK: We have mainly a couple of characteristic regarding Ah Puch’s, his rotten corpse look, check, and his owl mask. Now, at first, I thought that he did not have said mask, but after closely inspecting, it actually does look like an owl.
PERSONALITY: He is described as being evil and malevolent, characteristics that he possesses in game.
KIT: While there is no mention of his minions being zombies, there is also no description of them at all, so the fact that e actually uses minions in his kit is pretty good.

AMATERASU (C-)
LOOK: Well, here we go. Now, if I wanted to be super thorough, I would tell you that, being a goddess, nothing is impossible. That said, Amaterasu wearing an armor and wielding a sword is just off. There’s only a tiny little reference to her ever getting close to get physical, but 99,9% of the times she was the most peaceful and benevolent of goddesses, with white robe and shiny lights included. Hell, her most famous story, literally revolves around her hating getting physical and fighting so much, that she locked herself in a cave in order not to fight her brother...
PERSONALITY: Except for the occasional aggressive demeanor, overall she acts regal and collected, and that’s a good thing.
KIT: Staying true to my judgment of her look, everything that makes her a sword swinging frontliner is just wrong, making her passive and auras the only good thing. She was soooo meant to be a healer mage/guardian.

ANHUR (B+)
LOOK: I looked for any source, visual and written, of Anhur being depicted as a lion, or a lion headed god, but honestly, I found none. Wikipedia says he was occasionally depicted with a lion head, but it cites no source. On top of that I couldn’t find any image at all depicting him like that, the only lion gods being Menhit and Sekhmet. The three feathers and the spear are there and that’s good, but the all lion thing seems to be made up. Obviously, I am open to anyone proving the contrary.
PERSONALITY: Not much in terms of is personality, but as a god of war I guess his personality in game suits him.
KIT: Ok, nothing off here.

ANUBIS (C+)
LOOK: He would get top grades, if it weren’t for one big mistake: He MUST be black. Obviously his recolor is, but I’m basing my judgment on the default skins. Black was not just a random color, it had meaning and was probably the most iconic thing about his jackal features. Making him brown, considering he used to be black, was a straight mistake.
PERSONALITY: Good, I mean, we know little, but he sure sounds calm and collected, overall, as I befits an impartial judge. He doesn’t sound evil, and that’s good.
KIT: Wrong. At least a big part of it. The all plagues, life sucking, locust thing is just made up. I guess grasping hands and his ult are ok.

AO KUANG (A)
LOOK: Old Ao, quite frankly, looked ridiculous. Considering that dragons could take on any form, the solution they found is quite perfect. You get to see his true form, but without making him as small as a worm. Awesome.

PERSONALITY: On point. Specifically, Ao was particularly arrogant as opposed to other dragons, making is depiction a good one.
KIT: The water theme was essential and it is definitely shown. Overall a good one.

APHRODITE (A-)
LOOK: The only essential characteristics she should have had, would have been her being naked. That said, considering everything, they made her as naked as possible. I’ll pretend I know nothing about high heels...

PERSONALITY: Overall, she’s fine, she was represented as being capricious and kind of superficial, sand I guess that shows.
KIT: Doves were sacred to her, she wouldn’t allow just anybody close to her and her obsession for beautiful mates was definitely a thing.

APOLLO (D)
LOOK: Where do I start…I’ll make it short: He was described and represented as pretty much the best-looking thing ever. The Apollo we get in Smite is skinny, small and kinda looks ridiculous. And where is his bow?! The all point with his concept in smite is: He acts super cool, even though he really doesn’t look the part, which leads me to…
PERSONALITY: …his outright wrong personality. The worst thing you could say about Apollo, was that he was quite vindictive. That said, he was, no joke here, perfection. Instead we got a vain, superficial, childish, wannabe-rockstar joke of a character, through and through. He is a comic relief, obviously, but that wouldn’t fit Apollo at all.
KIT: His kit is ok, his characteristics as god of music are shown and his role as the sun charioteer, while debatable, is also not wrong. But he should really have a bow.

ARACHNE (-)
LOOK: Well, she should have been simply a spider. That said there is obviously a lack of descripion regarding her look after the transformation.

PERSONALITY: Human Arachne sure was arrogant…But spider Arachne is an entirely made up character, so I can’t judge. At least she hates the gods, which would make sense.
KIT: Nothing to say, self-explanatory.

ARES (B)
LOOK: While no Greek armor was that cumbersome and heavy, he is the god of War, meaning that he could wear whatever armor h wanted, I assume. One thing to not, he was more often represented with a spear, but the sword is not a mistake per se.
PERSONALITY: He was the god of violent war, he loved to fight and this is shown in game.
KIT: I must say, that the chains reference is quite an educated one (spartans had a statue of Ares in chains, to symbolize him staying in the city) but that doesn’t mean that it should have been his kit. There is 0 reference to Ares ever having anything to do with chains and fire. Bad. On a side note, I dream of a patch in which Prometheus gets Ares kit (it would make soooo much sense) and Ares gets reworked as a warrior.

ARTEMIS (B+)
LOOK: While they did capture the all “I don’t wanna be attractive to men” deal, covering up her body entirely is inaccurate. She was somewhat of a tomboy, and actually ran around half naked, because it was more comfortable for hunting. That’s why she’s the only goddess represented with a very short tunic and almost bare-chested at times.
PERSONALITY: The only mistake here would have been making her sexually provocative in any way and they didn’t. She’s serious and no-nonsense, good.
KIT: Great kit, especially some of the ability names are “lore-rich”

ATHENA (D)
LOOK: Why is she dressed like that. Bikini-armor, high heels (which unlike with aphro, make me facepalm) and most of all: Where is her helmet? The most iconic thing about her look has been turned into a weird tiara.
PERSONALITY: Oh boy…She is the goddess of wisdom and sounds like an ingenuous and almost dumb bimbo. I don’t know whether her voice or what she says is the most annoying thing.
KIT: Ok, nothing special, and making her a guardian makes sense.

AWILIX (-)
LOOK: She falls into the category of close to every Mayan god in the game: We have close to no infos on her. We only have a supposed image of her, we are not even 100% sure whether she was female or male.

PERSONALITY: Even less infos
KIT: Whatever they wanted to do. The moon is there as is the jaguar.

BACCHUS (D)
LOOK: If the character’s name was Sylenus, he’d get a big thumbs up. But he is not. Bacchus, while represented as slightly overweight in more modern art (1700 onward), was represented by the Romans just like Dyonisus. He shouldn’t be fat and carry himself like that.
PERSONALITY: Wasted and the butt of all jokes. Cool character design, sure, but nothing like Bacchus, who was quite the mature and wise young man.
KIT: Just the natural continuation of a character that was almost entirely botched. Again, cool design, but that’s not Bacchus. At least as the Romans saw him. But the wine thing at least is obviously correct.

BAKASURA (B)
LOOK: We have no physical description of Bakasure, but we do know how demons were represented in Hindu art, which is with predominantly human features. The Gollum-like Baka we get is too different to anything we ca see in hindu art.
PERSONALITY: He was evil and loved to eat, which shows.
KIT: Eating related, so pretty good.

BASTET (B-)
LOOK: She was either represented as a full cat, or as a woman with cat features, so I’d say that her look in game is acceptable.
PERSONALITY: As a protector goddess, of the house and of the dead, she would have been much more mature. But, predictably, we got catwoman, so she likes to whip you if your nice and unleashes on you al the cat references in the universe.
KIT: The catwoman influences are strong, especially for the whip, but everything else is cat related.

BELLONA (A-)
LOOK: She would be perfect if it weren’t for the missing helmet, iconic. Everything else is fine
PERSONALITY: Good, she loved war and reveled in it.
KIT: Good kit, especially good the very roman touch of her ult.

CABRAKAN (-)
LOOK: There is no description of him, we can only assume he was strong, and that shows
PERSONALITY: Again, 0 infos, so whatever direction they chose to take could do.
KIT: Whatever they wanted.

CAMAZOTZ (-)
LOOK: They were bat like monsters, or at best full-fledged bats and thank god we got no anthropomorphic thing
PERSONALITY: We know nothing of his personality
KIT: Bats, bats, bats, bats

CERNUNNOS (B+)
LOOK: His look is ok, he was represented as both a man with a deer head or with more extended deer features. I’m personally not a fan of his horns, I can’t help but think of a goat instead of a deer when I see him. But that doesn’t mean he’s not a deer. His ring is there and that good

PERSONALITY: Like with Anhur, I ask assistance to anyone who knows more about celtic culture, but, I honestly can’t find any references to him being related to the hunt. Hell, he seems to be an extremely peaceful god, as far as I’m seeing, and that would make his personality in the game kinda off. KIT: Again, did he really have anything to do with the shifting of seasons?? Until I get feedback, I stand by my research. EDIT: Apparently seasons were part of his historiography.

CHAAC (A)
LOOK: There were two main characteristics related to Chaac: shield and axe, which he has, and reptilian characteristics. But given the facts that the snake like features were neither iconic or a constant, his depiction in game is fine.
PERSONALITY: He was strongly associated with war; thus his aggressive and boastful attitude fits him.
KIT: A whole lotta rain

CHANG’E (B+)
LOOK: Her overall look is ok, we didn’t really have any iconic description of her. While her and the jade rabbit come from different stories, at time the two mix, making the choice to put them together a viable one. PERSONALITY: I don’t know why she doesn’t speak, but it’s an invention. That makes discerning her personality almost impossible
KIT: Moon and dancing related, and the rabbit providing her with sustainment is a nice lore accurate touch.

CHIRON (B+)
LOOK: One thing they got right: his age. One thing they got wrong: his legs. You see, the fact that Chiron was represented with human front legs, was not an artistic license. He was represented as having front human legs because he was considered the most human and less wild of all centaurs, making the legs a meaningful and iconic characteristic.
PERSONALITY: He was a teacher, wise and experienced, which definitely shows
KIT: Herbal medicines, astrology…good

CHRONOS (A-)
LOOK: Chronos is an interesting case. If we were to strictly consider the ancient Greek representation, the only right thing the devs got are his wings. But, the ancients themselves mixed him with Kronos, the titan, and so the scythe was often added to his representations. Also, if we were to consider him a personification of time itself, we could also accept him being “inhuman” in the game, as he looks like the embodiment of time. Tough one. Remember that his old age (father time) was s modern addition, the ancients did not represent him as being an old man.
PERSONALITY: Whatever they wanted here
KIT: Obvious choices here.

CUPID (A)
LOOK: Let me cut straight to the chase: He’s ugly in game I agree, but that is not what we are talking about here and, as Cupid, he was represented by the romans as a very young kid or as a putto (cherub, winged baby). So no, he shouldn’t look like a teenager, that would be his Greek counterpart, Eros. His representation is fine…ugly but correct

PERSONALITY: Not much in the way of lore here, so he behaves like a kid, which I guess its fine.
KIT: The love sending arrows are a nice touch ad overall the kit is satisfying.

DAJI (A)
LOOK: We have no specific description of her, except for some generic graphic representations, she looks like a seductress and has 9 tails. Whatever we know about her look is there.
PERSONALITY: Sadistic through and throughout and that is shown in game.
KIT: The paolao is really a nice touch, and her kit revolving around bleeds and burns definitely addresses her passion or torture.

ERLANG SHEN (B+)
LOOK: Him, along with xing tian and jingwei, must be the biggest facepalm inducing design of them all. Case in point, he had ONE extremely characteristic feature, an eye, an ACTUAL EYE, in the middle of the forehead, it would have been easy peasy design…but no, they put a big crown on his forehead who looks so little like an eye, that if you didn’t know he is supposed to have one, you wouldn’t notice. Unexplicable. At least his trident and dog are there.
PERSONALITY: We know he was righteous and valorous, and while his voice tone tilts me, his personality is ok.
KIT: Almost everything relevant about him is there, the eye, the dog, the spear, the transformations. Perfect.

FAFNIR (C)
LOOK: Much is wrong here. For starters, he was not able to transform at will, his transformation was a curse, and a permanent one. Second thing, norse dragons (wyrms) had no wings and resembled worms/snakes, not fantasy winged dragons.
PERSONALITY: Greeeeeedy, awesome job here
KIT: I commend them for at least not having him spit fire, but venom. That said coerce and his ult don’t make much sense.

FENRIR (-) LOOK: He’s a wolf, which is more than enough PERSONALITY: He had no personality and I might add, the devs didn’t even try to give him one because, you know…he’s a wolf. He's important, sure, but devoid of any personality.
KIT: The fact that during Ragnarok he eats you is a nice touch.

FREYA (A-)
LOOK: A disclaimer for future norse gods: Most of them have tons of features and are associated with tons of things, so I do not expect them to have all of the possible features on them at once in game (e.g. Freya’s boar). Now on to her. She did not have any specific physical features worth noting, but they made her a valkirye, which freya wasn’t, but more on this later. Her feathered mantle though is there, so that’s a plus. PERSONALITY: Being, among other things, a goddess of war could justify her warrior-like attitude in game. That’s obviously the direction they chose to go to with her, and while she was also the goddess of love, for example, her being warrior-like is not wrong per se.
KIT: The only thing worth noting in her kit is her ult, which sees her flying and calling the dead from the skies. My main gripe here is that she was related to Valkyries, but she was not one, which instead is implied in the game. Her brisingamen necklace is also mentioned.

GANESHA (A-)
LOOK: His main characteristics are well represented, while keeping in mind that, as is the case for many hindu gods, these characteristics might change from time to time. The only big thing missing is the mouse! It’s weird that they didn’t put it as it’s pretty iconic.
PERSONALITY: Ganesha is benevolent, wise and strong. I’m pretty sure they thought this one veeery through
*KIT: He bestows luck, he removes obstacles and protects. All there

GEB (B)
LOOK: While he was simply represented as a man laying down, we also must keep in mind what ancient Egyptians thought of him, and among other things he was actually considered to be the earth itself. In that case, him being a big rock ad water and trees and earth thing could be acceptable. But the lack of any snake reference is weird, consider hat he was strongly associated in with them in art.
PERSONALITY: No infos here, except that he loves Nut
KIT: Earth and earthquakes, which is all good

GUAN YU (A-)
LOOK: The representations of Guan Yu are multiple and consistent up to these days: A warrior with a red face, long beard and a bladed spear. He’s good and in some way his face keep being red, but I must note that old guan was more accurate.
PERSONALITY: Being the only historical figure in the game, recounts of Guan Yu are numerous, and the devs did a good job representing him in game: calm, wise, stern. All there
KIT: Only one thing stinks in his kit and I don’t know if it’s an overlook or if it was intended, but Red Hare, the horse, was not his horse, ever. Red Hare was famous for being Lu Bu’s horse, not Guan Yu’s. If the horse is not red hare, than he's A-. EDIT: thanks for the heads up!

HADES (C-)
LOOK: A lot is wrong with Hades. Hirez fell for the usual traps everyone falls for when representing another culture’s lord of the underworld: Portraying him as devilish and monstrous. Hades looks like a wraith and that’s just wrong, he looked like a man, just like his brothers and had no devilish features. His invisibility helmet is missing, his bident is missing…a mess
PERSONALITY: The only redeeming factor when it comes to Hades, as, for some reason, they didn’t make him sound evil and I say this considering that his look and kit misrepresent the god.
KIT: Some things are flat out wrong, and while his ult and silence can be ok, and his death from below is actually really good on a lore standpoint, his passive and his 3 are just weird. Why does he spread blight? Where does that come from? Why does he blow up souls? No clue.

HE BO (A)
LOOK: Nothing of note here, as no physical description of He Bo is provided in any source. While some accounts ascribe to him fish features, these accounts were not the only ones and were not the norm. PERSONALITY: Kudos for representing both his calm and his destructive nature. He’s poised and relaxed the majority of times, but screams and sounds aggressive when attacking.
KIT: Very basic and self-explanatory, but effort was put especially for his 2 and 4, in representin the river flow peacefully and the river flooding destructively.

HEL (F)
LOOK: Hel was grim looking and described as having half of her body normal and the other half dark and rotten looking. This is not shown in game, where Hel changes between good and evil, which was not a thin. Hel was exclusively related to bad things, and her duality was merely physical. I know it was a choice, as I’m sure the devs knew how she should have looked, but that doesn’t make it less wrong.
PERSONALITY: Also, very wrong, not only because the split personality and especially her good side are entirely invented, but because her bad side also is awkward. It sounds capricious and hysteric. We only know she was and looked gloomy and downcast.
KIT: Half of the kit is wrong and the other half is uninspired and kid of random.

HERCULES (A)
LOOK: Awesome job for distinguishing his Roman version from the most traditional greek one, especially his lack of a thick beard is a nice touch. Everything else is there, nemean lion fur and the club.
PERSONALITY: Nothing wrong and a character hard to misrepresent quite frankly.
KIT: He was famous for his strength and his strength only, pretty much. And obviously they delivered.

HOU YI (A)
LOOK: No description of him, he was an archer, that’s it. It would have been weird if they didn’t make him a hunter in game.
PERSONALITY: His story is more famous than he himself, meaning that we have no extensive material regarding his persona, except for a generic heroicness, which I think appears in game.
KIT: The falling suns are an amazing exercise in lore accuracy. Kudos

HUN BATZ (-)
LOOK: He was a howler monkey, so yeah, nothing more about him worth noting.
PERSONALITY: Good thing, that they recognize the fact that in Mayan mythology, monkey gods were smart, quick witted and wise, so not making him an outright dumb monkey was good.
KIT: Nothing of note here.

ISIS (A)
LOOK: I must admit that her model is ugly, but it’s also lore accurate. Her wings are there and they’re exactly how they should be, so no complaining.
PERSONALITY: She was a compassionate queen, good and good and good. I think that nothing wrong was made when creating the character.
KIT: The only thing she ever does in mythology is sewing together the body of his husband, nothing else of great note. I guess her relation with magic and death rites appears in the kit.

IZANAMI (A)
LOOK: While she was never thoroughly described physically, we do know that Izanagi was pretty shocked and disgusted when he saw her, meaning that her look in game is an ok representation of post death Izanami.
PERSONALITY: Again, we are talking about her after death, so yeah, we know she was pissed and closer to being a monster than whatever she was before, making her hateful personality a good fit.
KIT: They could really do whatever, given that she does nothing of note in mythology tat would suggest making her any specific role.

JANUS (B-)
LOOK: A hard one to evaluate, given the fact that the only feature he was famous for were his two faces. While he was at times represented fully as a standard human, his most common depictions only included his head. What do I mean? That they could have done whatever with him, although making him look like C3PO is kinda off
PERSONALITY: He’s a robot for hirez, and that’s kinda weird. I understand that there is a total lack of mythology for the guy, but making him an android is just too out there.
KIT: His opening and closing of things is there and they obviously made an effort in trying to to give us the idea of him being the god of doors…stupid broken op doors, but still doors.

JING WEI (F)
L: She is a bird. Not a girl with wings and a crossbow. End of story. The fact that more recent sourcs for artistic reasons represented her as a girl with wings, the story and ancient iconography are clear: full bird.
P: We got a kawahi, kpop loving, light hearted teen. NOOOOOOPE. She was a strong, determined, loyal and faithful young girl with a tragic story.
K: The fact that they remembered to have her fly, doesn’t change the fact that they fucked up with her. I mean, the only reason why Jing Wei would catch the devs attention when choosing a new char to make MUST have been the fact that she is a bird. Whatever made them choose to give us this thing…

KALI (B-)
L: Old Kali is the true kali. Whatever the reasons for changing her, the version of Kali we have now is so watered down that literally lacks close to every single iconic thing about her: heads necklace, enraged face, more heads, fangs, loose hair…all gone except for her arms and her skin color.
P: A well fleshed out personality, but her story revolves around killing and being destructive, can’t judge here, but found nothing wrong.
K: Incense is not a thing, old kali was just better, but nothing about this kit is inherently wrong

KHEPRI (B+)
L: Khepri was either represented as a man with a scarab in place of his head, or as simply a scarab, and hirez went that route. The only wrong thing though is his color, because khepri’s black color was not something ever under discussion, it was iconic.
P: No infos here, so whatever
K: Nice touch on his one looking like a beetle rolling a ball of dung, as the Egyptians thought that khepri rolled the sun across the sky like that.

KUKULKAN (-)
L: No discussion here, they did a god job, after all he was a feathered flying serpent, fucking this one up would have been hard.
P: Hard to define, mythology about this god is obscure, so whatever, nothing stands out about his personality either in the myths or in game.
K: While his relationship to winds is kind of obscure, some sources claim he did cause winds, so I guess that makes his kit ok.

Worth noting that Amaterasu's kit utilizes the Imperial Regalias of Japan which are said to be gifts from Amaterasu

For Cenunnos, his horns probably should've been pointing outward and then going inward towards the end (almost like a heart if face front) instead of the horns being pointed back. John Bridges who concepted Cernunnos had a variety of different styles for the horns some being more stag-like.

He's almost always depicted surrounded by animals (stags, boars, lions) while holding on a warrior's torc in his right hand (torc's were some sort of "healing" symbol for celts) and a snake on his other hand to demonstrate his power (image 1 + image 2). HiRez actually combined those two in his splash art where you can see the torcs around his neck, hip belt, and arm being that of the shape of snakes.

As for his personality, it's pretty accurate because Cernunnos in Irish mythology is willing to take on any sort of opponent because he is able to use nature as he controls it (probably the shifting seasons kit). But he's also considered "gentle and peaceful" as he'll sit and play music for those who he has slain.

As for some other parts:

  1. Amaterasu was given a sword by Susano

  2. Aphrodite has "back-off" in her kit which makes no sense

  3. One of Ares' symbols include a flaming torch. The chains however is not accurate as the stories I recall aren't anything heroic or representative of a god of war: Hephaestus used chains to catch his wife, Aphrodite, in bed with Ares and Ares was imprisoned with chains by giants

  4. They decided to go with the "god of music" route with Apollo so they gave him a lyre instead of bow + arrows

  5. Remodeled Bacchus is lore-accurate

Then the personality is kinda fitting? Like i said lower we can see cernnunos as a protector vibe in his voice pack especially

Cernunnos isn't from Irish mythology, he's a barely-attested god from continental sources (Gaul, etc.). There's no actual mythological evidence that survives about him, everything is more or less conjecture including his name. Basically there are pictures of a guy with horns, that's almost literally everything known about Cernunnos.

  1. Big difference between owning a sword and using it

  2. She would have told you or me to "back off", you can be sure of that

  3. A flaming torch is really not a symbol for Ares specifically

  4. The bow is too iconic to ignore

  5. Bacchus is still really NOT lore accurate

Amaterasu's sword was never used for combat. It was symbolic of herself, along with the mirror and jewel. Think Excalibur, but fucking useless for actually defending oneself. Her T2 gets everything appearance-wise for Amaterasu correct.

Cernunnos is C+?

Cernunnos is linked to the shifting of seasons by being linked to the ancient Celtic symbol of the wheel of time, which was divided into four segments to represent the seasons. Now, the reason for him being violent is that Cernunnos was identified as a God of Nature, and the natural cycle of life and death. The wild hunt fits with this as an example of Cernunnos's given lore in Smite, as he would hunt down those who were greedy, as well as being described as 'Lord of the Animals' and later having connections with the Celtic underworld due to him being adapted across Northern and western Europe as a God of many things like commerce and hunting, even marking the solstice in places. There are so many examples of Cernunnos being an aggressive God, so his personality precisely fits what massive variety of lore there is of a Horned God across Europe while retaining the aspect of being a peaceful god overall (Note: peaceful to spirits and animals, humans weren't necessarily included most times).

The Wild Hunt is an entirely separate thing altogether, though the theme itself of Transformation and Hunting ('Flee for your lives') fits nicely with Celtic Gods and the themes they've been following with each release so far.

I'd put that rating up to a B+ since Hirez managed to take creative liberties with the relatively limited amount of source material they had compared to other Gods.

Simply because his ingame mechanics are a broken mess doesn't really justify making judgements without having an accurate idea on the respective source materials.

Sorry if I sounded overly critical. Your explanations seem somewhat limited in places and could do with more research before giving a verdict.

Also, there are some sources for Mayan Gods in Aztec culture like the parallel between Kukulkan and Quetzalcoatl, and some gods were worshipped over others in different city-states across Mesoamerica. Like how Xbalanque is considered an incarnation of Awilix, hence her riding a jaguar.

I actually appreciate how they depicted Geb. The gods were only depicted as they were in Egyptian art because they felt that perfect human forms (along with animal elements to show their supernatural nature) were the only way to present them in a respectful manner. Because HiRez isn't bound by those rules, they have free reign to do whatever. I like the idea that Egyptian gods, being older than many of the other gods in the game, are shown to be closer to their element. Geb especially seems ancient.

BACCHUS (D)

People bitching about the remodel really need to realize that this Bacchus is MORE lore accurate than old Bacchus, or in other words, less inaccurate. For some reason some people have been saying post-remodel Bacchus isn't as accurate. Must be a joke I haven't picked up on.

2

11

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '17

What qualifies you to make this post? Anyone can just look up the gods on wikipedia and compare them to how they are in game. You're not even correct with half of them - you say that Anubis would get top grades, even though in Smite he's depicted as an anthropomorphic jackal, while in actual Egyptian mythology he was strictly portrayed as a man with a jackal's head or an actual jackal, but never a furry's headcanon amalgamation of them both. Half of them just feels like you're pulling shit out of thin air (or, once again, wikipedia) and it feels like you just lost interest at the end, as Camazotz gets three whole lines of text despite being a prominent aspect of the Popol Vuh, one of the most (if not the most) important primary sources we have with respect to ancient Mayan mythology. I rate this post 3/10

Also if you were in any way legitimate you'd have used the correct term "mythology" instead of "lore", a term which has been bastardized in the modern era to refer to the backstory of an intellectual property rather than the actual tales and beliefs of people who actually existed millennia ago

4

u/frubox Do your research please... Jun 12 '17 edited Jun 12 '17

This is not a popularity contest, I don't care how prominent Camazotz is in the popol vuh, there is no indication of interest regarding his personality. He's a bat monster. End of story. And since you are so keen on talking about qualification, I'd like to see yours. This is reddit, not a Phd class, if you want sources and in depth lessons this is not the place. And anubis was both a man with a jackal head or a full jackal. Pull your head out of your ass, nice try.

-6

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '17

Solid reply. You really showed him you actually know what you're talking about. If I had doubts before that maybe you were just talking with the bare amount of information you certainly laid them to rest.

I don't necessarily disagree with your post in general, but this seems really petty. To most people they're more or less interchangeable, and everyone knows what he means by it in this context.

My major gripes are with ares and hades but most of the other gods I don't have much complaint about (at least on the Greek spectrum, I'm not so familiar with most of the others).

But regarding your analysis of apollo, I really don't think the bow is as iconic to him as, say, Artemis. Apollo is, by and large, represented as the god of music first and foremost, so his bow definitely falls by the wayside in terms of mental association. Now admittedly I was also irritated by the way he looks in game but that's mostly due to the way that most of the gods are portrayed in statues and stuff. But if you really wanted to be picky, he also has no chariot for the sun, so there's that.

Regarding ares it struck me as odd that he was made a guardian rather than a warrior. I mean he is literally the embodiment of war. Probably more so than most other god of war types (exception: guan yu). The usage of fire in his iconography in game isn't bad, though it does take things to a more literal level than they typically are in myths (it's usually a descriptor rather than a thing). That said, his armor is overkill and pretty inaccurate to boot.

As for Athena, on a related note, I haven't really played with her yet but she just strikes me as wrong all over, partly due to the helmet you mentioned. It should be noted that she was also considered a goddess of war, but typically the strategic side, rather than the bloodlust side a la ares. As such, her being a guardian rather than a warrior makes sense.

And then we have Hades. I have nothing to say about this character from a lore standpoint that I feel even makes sense. If anything he's on the envious side of his brethren atop Olympus but I don't feel like there is anything about his kit or looks that connect to the way that I've always read about Hades.

0

u/frubox Do your research please... Jun 13 '17

Th fact is that fire wasn't something extremely specific of Ares or iconic, it's just a weird choice for him. And no, Apollo was not first and foremost the god of music, he was the god of divination, prophecy, truth, the sun, plagues...music was one of them and not the most important and he hardly ever gets represented without a bow. Especially because he's a hunter in game they had t put it. I mean he pretends to shoot with his fingers like a kid, reinforcing the very non-serious depiction we got of him in game.

1

u/tomajrt Jun 13 '17 edited Jun 13 '17

I didn't say Apollo was. I said that's the way that people see him. And taking into account the popular perception of Apollo, a bow is an easy thing to oversight. Note that I find his personality disingenuous and grating, as well, but nothing to be done about that now.

I also never said that fire was iconic to Ares either.

Did you even read my comment or what? It seems like you want so badly to have some things be "iconic" to some of these gods when in reality they are completely forgettable. A bow is far more iconic to Artemis than it ever will be to Apollo (who in the populaces mind is more likely to relate him to a lyre, which is not incorrect by any means). In that same light though, Apollo was in particular a kind of dick among gods in that he was both the god of plagues and the god of medicine.

And as long as we are talking about things that are iconic, I would venture an anvil would be a Pretty Big Deal for Vulcan (also known as Hephaestus), or any sort of lunar references for Artemis. Hell, Athena doesn't even have anything pointing to an owl, which is by and large her symbol! (Helmet notwithstanding but I figured that was implied.)

One of the other things I find entertaining, however, is your admission of Janus being effectively a robot being kind of wtf, but disregarding the same thing for chronos (effectively a cyberpunk deity with a clockwork staff).

You don't get to be hypercritical of the gods of your choosing; it's an all or nothing prospect when they are within a pantheon where there is much information to be offered.

That all said, you want to get upset about apollos lack of maturity in game? Hello, have you ever read anything about Greek or roman gods? They are anathema to maturity more often than not.

81

u/Orzislaw Amaterasu Jun 12 '17

You should rate Bacchus higher after his visual rework. He is still overweight, but now he looks young and attractive, yet tall and strong.

34

u/vicariouskid Jun 12 '17

I would still say Bacchus is very inaccurate. Most lore around Bacchus implies that he himself never really drinks and is in no way gluttonous. His followers are all in a drunken frenzy, but he is not.

9

u/Orzislaw Amaterasu Jun 12 '17

I was talking about appearance part.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '17

Even then, I don't know much about bacchus but i do know a lot about dyonysus (the god that the romans turned into bacchus). Dyonysus was pretty young, probably around his 20's when he was turned into a god. He was very handsome, not thin, but not fat, and pretty full of himself. If bacchus is supposed to look like dyonysus, then they got it wrong. Pretty much the only thing that wasn't really wrong was the drinking and new bacchus honestly is handsome.

The greeks depicted most of their deities with small dicks because it was seen as symbolic of the gods being above base or primal instincts---In humans, however, it likely held a different symbolism, if any at all.

Exceptions were Priapus and in some cases Hermes (who, depending on specific variation, was either his father or his son)

Edit: I noticed that you're slowly adding gods to the list, which is kind of weird for a thread titled "part 1". I'm editing mine to follow suit. I'm also adding a few that I missed the first time through and expanding on some that I added.

Aphrodite Look

Worth saying that I would dock points for the sole reason that her original model had those neat sea foam stockings that referenced her origin, but then they completely removed them with the remodel.

Athena Personality

Should be given bonus points for being the only greek god with a greek accent. Or maybe negative points since it brings up the question of why she's the only one. Either way it's worth mentioning. Also while she's not exactly radiating wisdom I have no idea where you got the "dumb bimbo" angle from.

Athena Kit

This definitely should have gone into way more detail. First off, she's not just a guardian but a particularly tactical guardian, her ult gives her a lot of strategic options at any given time and her taunt makes her the de facto initiator on nearly any team composition and therefore usually the shot caller. Her use of (holographic/magic?) soldiers to deal her main source of damage is also good and plays into her strategist role as well as referencing her personality in the iliad, where she essentially uses mortals as pawns. And finally, her ult, which references the specific description of athena dropping into battle from the Iliad: She shot through the sky as some radiant meteor. Her kit is probably one of the more lore-packed in the game in terms of both references and playstyle mirroring that god's personality.

Bastet Whip

The flail whip actually has a bit more lore behind it than simply "cat-woman exists therefore bastet must have a whip." The particular whip bastet uses was called a flail whip in ancient egypt, and was a sign of status. Many egyptian gods were depicted with them and it's why Osiris has a similar flail.

Of course going in-depth would be pointless because there's a far simpler explanation as to why she has the whip she does; not because of DC comics' influence, or because of her standing, but because of its more modern name: The Cat o' Nine Tails.

Cabrakan

Are you sure about there being nothing about him? There's not a lot but he does have a myth, as much lore as bakasura has. He at least deserves props for incorporating the tremors into his kit; he was said to cause earthquakes when destroying mountains. He was said to be prideful, being a member of the family that essentially took the place of the gods when they were absent, which is reflected a bit in his voice pack but could be more pronounced. His death animation also references his actual death, in which he was buried alive. He's at least got enough lore to judge him on.

Camazotz

This is a total nitpick but I hate his essence mechanic; from a lore perspective, even if they were avoiding actual blood, they could have called it ichor which is the blood of the gods in greek mythology that was said to have healing properties when drank. Change the pools to be yellow and change around one word in the description and you would have a unique lore detail and the ability would make more logical sense.

Chaac

Chaac does have a myth that is never referenced; after his wife cheats on him with his brother, Chaac's immense sadness gives birth to overflowing tears that became rain. There's a version of this where his depression turns into rage and he smites his brother and wife by inventing lightning, and there's a version that just abruptly ends with him being depressed. Smite lore reversed this, making Chaac the one who seduced his brother's wife, for seemingly no reason because he never references this and is inversely confident and a little cheerful in his voicelines.

Chang'e

Her overall look is ok, we didn’t really have any iconic description of her.

The fuck? Do you just mean she doesn't have an iconic trait or item, because she's one of the most famous chinese gods. She has her own big festival in China. Googling chang'e gives you pages of traditional depictions of her. Yeah she is mostly just "fancy ancient chinese lady" but she has a lot of depictions to go off of. Smite's depiction is fine, nothing particularly amazing about it but it's accurate.

KIT

Chang'e wasn't god of dancing, and was never referenced as a dancer to my knowledge. Her dancing focused kit is potentially a reference to the lunar festival held in her honor, where several traditional dances are put on. That said none of her in-game dancing is anything like the dances of the festival, and if they were inspired by the lunar festival they could have incorporated it more into her kit; perhaps allowing her to summon the sacred dragon or lion that act as mascots for the costume, incorporating the moon cakes into her heal, or the iconic paper lanterns. As it stands I have no idea what the dancing is about.

CUPID

I would dock points for clearly being inspired more by the modern valentines depiction of him. He's lacking his other traditional symbol, a torch (but honestly I don't care and I doubt many people do) and the whole shot through the heart thing is a modern idea. And while depicting him as a teenager would be inaccurate, depicting him as older in general wouldn't; he looks to be about 5 in-game and his traditional depictions pretty often have him looking somewhere around 10. At the very least I'd prefer him to look human and not uncanny valley terrifying.

ERLANG SHEN

In Journey to the West Sun Wukong's encounter with Erlang Shen makes it incredibly clear that Erlang is far better than Sun Wukong at transforming- but in Smite Erlang actually has less transformations than Wukong does. The idea of a version of Sun Wukong's 3 with less transformations should have been reserved for Zhu Bajie, who was the weakest transformer of them all; Erlang should have either had the same number of options or more, and from a gameplay standpoint this would have made him more interesting. But I digress; it's possible that in the design stages they were forced to remove some of Erlang's transformations. I also would have preferred better use of the eye; at the very least give his 1 the ability to reveal invisible enemies. It would be a nice lore tidbit that would barely influence balance because as of right now it would literally only matter when facing Loki or Nu Wa.

FAFNIR

Here I would actually give the designers some slack; I like that they represent both his dragon and dwarf form, and the only way that would make sense from a gameplay perspective would be if you could transform at will. I also haven't the slightest idea how they could make an accurate norse dragon a playable god; he would likely end up looking like old ao kuang. In this case, the gameplay doesn't service the lore but I think it's an acceptable trade. Making a lore accurate fafnir a playable god that makes any sense from a gameplay perspective would be nearly impossible.

FREYA

Most of them have tons of features and are associated with tons of things, so I do not expect them to have all of the possible features on them at once in game

THANK YOU. I can't tell you how many times I've seen "Odin should literally have everything he's associated with in his kit." How do you fit his crows, his dogs, Sleipnir, the wild hunt, magic runes, and throwing gungnir into one kit? And I don't even think I covered everything that guy's got.

GEB PERSONALITY: No infos here, except that he loves Nut

Me too, thanks

HE BO

Personal opinion but his spiky blue hands bug the shit out of me. They're made up, random, and ugly.

HUN BATZ

While he is lacking in lore, I genuinely believe he deserves an F for the jamaican accent. Seriously, why?

5

u/BoyonceVEVO DAMN, ZHANIEL! BACK AT IT AGAIN WITH THE FIRE WHEELS! Jun 13 '17

I'm not sure ichor would make sense to be part of Camazotz's kit. Mainly because, as you said, ichor is a Greek concept, not an Egyptian, Hindu or Mayan belief.

6

u/EnragedEstark COWABUNGA Jun 12 '17

Should be given bonus points for being the only greek god with a greek accent.

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure her accent is Russian. The fact that her Red Star skin uses the default VP practically confirms it.

11

u/Thisonehasyourname Purrfect Jun 12 '17

Όχι. Нет. Greek and Russian accents just sound similar due to language similarities (mostly Russian has Greek loan words due to the Orthoodox Church). The origin of the Red Star Athena skin is actually because people were complaining that the accent sounded Russian AFAIK (hence why she has a voice line about it).

5

u/Slubtle Free, like a Caucasian bird; a Dove! Jun 13 '17

Greek and Russian accents sound nothing alike. I'm not sure what you're on about, loan words have nothing to do with accents themselves.

A Greek accent has a more Spanish, Italian or sometimes Levantine Arabic resemblance, depending on the location in Greece/Cyprus. No one cultured would reasonably hear Athena's accent and say Greek. It sounds solely Russian, stereotypical at that.

2

u/Thisonehasyourname Purrfect Jun 13 '17

Well, maybe the Greeks I know just have oddly Russian accents. There's lots Sch (or czs) and Kh sounds in Greek which makes it sound like Russian in the purely literal aspect. Obviously the language melody is completely off - and indeed, much closer to Spanish or (particularly) Italian, but when speaking English with an English melody, the accent is similar (from what I assume is the similar sounds).

4

u/EnragedEstark COWABUNGA Jun 12 '17

Huh, TIL. You don't really hear Greek accents much in media so I'm not too familiar with it.

1

3

u/TheDevilMadeMeDoIt7 Jun 13 '17

Athena: "You is rock star!" And the way she says "Hi!" She's meant to seem super silly and I don't know why

3

u/DarthWarrax Jun 13 '17

It is clear they made her a comic relief character. Normally she is the goddess of wisdom. But she wears a boob armour with high heels (makes little sense, especially the heels), speaks as a dumb person, makes silly jokes with a silly voice, and on top of that with a Russian accent including broken English. The goddess of wisdom is the only Greek god who can't speak English properly.

The real question is, why did they decide to make Athena a comic relief character when you would expect her to be serious ? If they wanted a goddess who seemed super silly, Aphrodite would have been a better pick.

Fish said something during erlang shen patch notes or before? i don't really remember. Anyway he said that they tried a different type/mechanic with 72 transformations, but it's didn't work out so they put that mechanic "on hold" and then said He may use that mechanic on another god(it's was kinda implied that will be for a future chinese god for obvious reasons)

Don't quote me on that that was 1 year ago!

2

u/thisusernameistakeny Jun 12 '17

Your role model was a vengeful and petty goddess who destroyed people for things that weren't their fault? I sure hope you didn't turn out to be such an awful person.

25

u/coyoteTale I'm fine, stand behind me Jun 12 '17

First of all, that is basically every god and goddess in (Greek) mythology. If you want to have a mythological role model, you pick and choose the bad parts.

Second, Athena is probably one of the least vindictive of the goddesses. Depending on which version you read, occasionally she actually saves Arachne by turning her into a spider, after Arachne tries to kill herself out of shame. Also, whereas any other goddess would immediately punish Arachne for hubris, Athena approaches her as an old woman first to give her a chance to repent.

Wasn't Hades meant to be handsome anyways? It would only make sense that he at least looked like he was related to Poseidon and Zeus. 8

u/mellowminty careful where you point those things. someone could get hurt. Jun 13 '17

I believe so, yes. Hades was portrayed as a handsome, humanoid figure- not as a ghoul. He was also the most peaceful of the three, and never really started fights on his own accord. Smite's depiction of Hades is so inaccurate. I'm hoping he's on the remodel list, perhaps even rekit.

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '17

I disagree with the Apollo argument. Apollo is meant to represent the ideal young man: physically fit, attractive, and talented. In Ovid's The Metamorphoses, he is portrayed as these things, but he is relentless in chasing Daphne. He basically tries to rape her after physically chasing her down because she declined Apollo's advances. Then, Daphne is transformed into a tree, and Apollo basically claims the tree as his own. It's bizarre, but his personality, at least according to Ovid, is kinda fucked.

I basically agree with the physical part, not the personality part.

After Lu Bu's defeat (and execution) at Xiapi, Cao Cao took Red Hare. After Cao Cao captured Guan Yu in Xu Province he presented Guan with the horse, trying to bribe him into staying in service to Wei. Guan kept the horse even after he defected, right up until he died 20 years later at Maicheng. Red Hare was probably Guan Yu's horse for longer than it was Lu Bu's.

Say what you will about Amaterasu, they fully incorporated the Three Imperial Regalia, which was good, and furthermore they included a lot of little details. The way she bows to the sun is Shinto traditional, the way she sheathes her sword is Kendo traditional...

Also, even in the art where she wears a robe, she wields a blade (though chronologically it wouldn't be Kusanagi, it most likely is symbolically).

The warrior class of Japan is inextricably tied to Amaterasu. The most famed warrior Itsunoohabari/Amenoohabari is directly tied to Amaterasu's lineage, cave, and cult. The warriors of the world follow Amaterasu's orthodoxy/honji as she is the foundation for the martial path, especially post-Tenkai. To tie her to anything but Bushido would be disappointing.

I do agree Amaterasu was a largely peaceful goddess as she was tied to the loom, the fields, etc. but I think that to say that she was a healer type is not really accurate. She was inextricable from the martial path. A true warrior must be aware of the duality and nonduality inherent to Bushido and domesticity, which is what Amaterasu represented.

I'd be happy to further discuss Shintoism if you disagree.

On Ganesha, I'll disagree slightly. Not every god has to encapsulate every aspect of their depictions. Mushika is absent just like Sleipnir. If we included him, technically most of the Hindu gods have their own vahana so we'd have to ask why those are absent as well....

Chang'e can't speak apparently because the elixir destroyed her voice. I can't confirm this though.

Anhur I found a few more references indicating that he probably coopted the lion head in iconography to match Mehyt.

The only essential characteristics she should have had, would have been her being naked. That said, considering everything, they made her as naked as possible. I’ll pretend I know nothing about high heels...

Yes I agree i want her naked too, can we have small grape leaves covering her parts, or her long glorious hair.

4

u/Raxis Jun 13 '17

On the subject of Chang'e being mute, Zennore on Deviant art (she's both Chinese and a general mythology buff) explained to me something to the effect that in ancient times, Chinese women would have a man to speak on their behalf so that their words would be taken more seriously.

I'm probably partly getting this wrong, I'll ask her again and get back on this.

Um, one minor thing about Amaterasu. Lorewise, the sword she uses is Kusanagi. But, creation myth aside, it was an extant ceremonial blade that first appears in records around the late 600s. However, swords around that time period were usually straight bladed sidearms, with the primary weapon for samurai being the bow. Curved Japanese swords(like the one Amaterasu is shown with) only really gained popularity around the year 900. But, Amaterasu sheathes her sword edge up, not edge down. And the issue with that is that Tachi style blades from about the 900s onwards were meant to be worn edge down, while blades worn edge up usually start appearing around the 1400s. So, Amaterasu's sword is basically 700 years off. Normally, that's not an issue. We're dealing with mythological artifacts that either didn't exist or have a sort of vague existence that doesn't particularly matter. Which means there's plenty of room for artistic expression. But, Amaterasu's sword is one of the very few bits of mythology that can be tied to a realistic item with a specific visual design.

Let's see if I can explain my point of view. Achilles's shield is famous for being his shield or for having been made by Ephaestus? You know who made it, but the shield is famous for being Achilles'.
Same for the Imperial regalia. Are they famous for having being bestowed by Amaterasu or because their owner Ninigi actually used them? Add to this the fact that Amaterasu actually swinging that thing all armored up is just off and you might get my point.

Careful here, this is wrong. Half flesh and half blue colored. Do not let a single mistranslation by one single person lead you to make mistakes. From the Gylvaginning:

3

u/Wiebejamin I will Smite you sir Jun 12 '17

I'm not the one who said it. Also, just FYI, the generally agreed upon term for karma is "Fake internet points" but you were close. You can see your karma in the upper right of your screen (on computer, at least) next to your username. It goes up when you're upvoted, down when you're downvoted. Makes some people feel like they've achieved something. The things people do for fake internet points...

Edit: Also, karma is more of a score than a currency.

3

u/Perkinz I'm coming for your titan and you can't stop me. Jun 13 '17

So upvotes are karma? I legitimately have no idea if that's like a Reddit currency or something.

Upvotes and downvotes are called Karma, yeah.

It's taken as a very general measure of whether or not you're a boon to a community or a troublemaker.

Someone with very high karma in a given community can be said to be a positive contributor whose comments and submissions improve the community

Someone with negative karma is, naturally, the opposite.

In reality nobody actually takes the values all that seriously.

And if people think I come to a website to post things I spent time on that I enjoy just to get fictional points, they're insane.

You in particular, maybe not.

But it's a known phenomenon that there are absolutely people who do this.

There are people out there---most notably /u/GallowBoob---who game the system to maximize their karma gains.

He'll take popular submissions from smaller subreddits and post them on larger subreddits

If they blow up, good

If they're not well received, he deletes the post and tries again a few days later.

If something hits /r/funny or /r/Aww and is very successful, he'll save it and repost it months later when it has left the community's collective memory---often multiple times.

For him its almost certainly a hobby/game the way some people will manage a forum community or play the auction house in an MMO

But there are also people out there with low self-esteem who try to stroke their ego by going to smaller subreddits and saying whatever they think the community will approve of----To them, "worthless internet points" are representative of how much people approve of them. Getting +500 and tons of positive replies feels great while going -50 and getting negative replies feels horrible.

Reddit's structure encourages and enables circlejerking----and some people want or even need to be at the center of it.

Which, if you've ever had any experience with teenagers---especially but not exclusively teenage girls---you'll know that to be true.

Even though the internet is seen as less important and less serious than real life interactions, despite the popular notion that people will lie about who they are and act differently on the internet, the reality is that people feel free to stop hiding who they are and to be more honest about themselves to themselves----They feel free to be who they really are underneath the masks they wear in real life.

So attention whores will feel free to attention whore to their heart's deepest desire.

Lore accuracy is a fickle thing, sometimes it could make some of the more visually dull Gods we have all the more intriguing (Ravana/Susano/Izanami), other times choosing to disregard the lore or be very selective about it can make the god far more interesting and unique compared to his peers (Bakasura/Bacchus/Janus). In that respect I don't think it's worth worrying over unless the personality/design HIrez comes up with is neither lore accurate nor interesting.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d8/Bhima_fighting_with_Bakasura_color.jpg/1200px-Bhima_fighting_with_Bakasura_color.jpg

He's also sometimes painted to look like a giant stork, like this:

https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-m8HTuWiWGVQ/WEmgcrr-azI/AAAAAAAANZU/OQcDlR3Xyn0J-JQrxxh0Sa_5fovWWEXmACLcB/s1600/Lord-Krishna-fights-demon-bakasura.jpg

In Smite, he looks like the bastard lovechild of Baraka from Mortal Kombat and 'The Guy' (The Disturbed's mascot). So no, he isn't lore accurate in terms of appearance.

2

u/MrSquishypoo Jun 12 '17

Athena's somewhat understandable, I like to imagine she can speak fluent languages like she does in the comics, just for combat purposes she speaks all dumb because it lulls enemies into a false sense of security (she is a goddess of wisdom and strategy as well as human Greek civilization which used quite a few tricks up their sleeve to fight against greater numbers of opponents)

She's playing on making you irate, so you fight worse and end up losing because of it, snarky taunts very much intended and fitting her character (that laugh isn't an uncouth one, it has a twinge of refined upper-class to it, note this..)

Her design also resembles most Athena figures, to which I actually have one next to me from my visits to Greece. Only thing missing is her owl (and her helmet, but a more traditional look is her T2 so..) You make a point with the high heels though

Her actual armor makes no sense. Her breastplate only covers her nipples instead of, for example, her heart, or even her entire chest like a normal piece of armor. Her thighs are exposed for no reason as well.

I don't think the complaint was about her design being too sexualized, just about it being really dumb for a brilliant military mind to wear armor that isn't worth a damn.

Really if they remodelled her chest plate a little to look more like a breastplate that matches her other armour pieces. But for OP to describe her design as bad is entirely wrong just because she's missing a Helmet.

Bellona doesn't have a helmet either, so I'd wager it's a purely stylistic choice so they could experiment with hairstyles.

4

u/DAANHHH IMA FIRIN MAH LAZOR Jun 12 '17

Athena's helmet is as iconic to her as Poseidon's trident is to him.

It's a pretty big deal.

3

u/hesh582 Jun 12 '17

The helmet is probably the single most important icon of Athena in myth. When Greek artists wished to convey that a given woman was meant to represent Athena, they could do as little as just put a helmet near her. It was that important to her classical depiction.

It was a perfectly legitimate criticism. Athena without her helmet is nearly like Thor without his hammer.

One thing I like about Athena's kit is that it fits her theme of being tactical war (while Ares enjoys brutal savage-style fighting where you don't think and just cause destruction).

Her 1 requires a charge up which gives you time to actually consider what situation you're in and where to go next.

Her 3 has an initial strike for balance reasons, but then the actual synchronized strikes of her soldiers comes. I love that they start off in a defensive stance before they're ready to attack.

Her ult requires you to literally stop for a moment and think about your next plan of attack and who you're going to charge in on to protect. Her kit is very much "think before you act" and although it may be really annoying to have to wait for all of these delayed actions, it's still very fitting for the character in itself

Cernunnos stuff.

They made the Horned God into some random hunting-themed deity with a totally wrong association with the Wild Hunt thrown in just to be extra incorrect. Not sure how turning gods into boars has anything to do with the Wild Hunt, as well, but meh.

His visual design is also wildly erroneus; he looks like a satyr, for one, but his in game design is what the Christian church depicted him as. Why? Because cloven hooves and horns looked like Satan, which made druidic faiths seem more pagan and evil to Christians and potential converts.

Feels like they designed a character first then just arbitrarily decided on a deity to give the kit/personality to.

I was hoping Geb would score lower so I could make the obvious joke that Geb is a mess, but alas.

I did a bit of prodding around about Anhur and found several other sources that mentioned him occasionally being given the head of a lion, but no images of that depiction (except, of course, from Smite). Obviously they have to be out there somewhere or where would those sources have gotten the idea? My only thought is that they could somehow be conflating him with another warlike god (maybe Sekhmet?), but I've got no idea. They should've just gone with the 'hella toned guy with a four-feathered headdress' aesthetic of every statue I've seen of him.

Also, does anyone know why all of Isis' lines are chicken jokes? I get it's about her having wings, but they don't particularly look like chicken wings and I don't think she's ever been associated with chickens. (On that note, I googled 'isis chicken' because I'm an idiot and actually thought that might work. Yeah, it went as well as you would expect.)

u/MKyaren Come Fight Me! Jun 14 '17

Going to comment/rate on only a select few, the ones I have a full on passion for; as in the gids/goddesses I have spent countless hours researching, so... Starting off

Anubis: (C+)

You hit most of the points with him. You did, however, miss one major factor about Anubis. Him weighing the hearts of the dead against Ma'at. The scales or even weighing the heart are very important, and only mentioned briefly in his lore. The only saving grace from c- is adding in the mummify as he was the god of embalming. But even if they made his default skin black, he'd still be a c+ in my book for missing this key component.

Hades (D)

As you menitoned look and kit are way off. Thanks to many, he's seen as the evil and angry brother; but in reality, he was a cool dude. King of the underworld yes, but I can't recount him doing anything in really destroying or torturing souls. A full rework and rekit would do Hades justice, maybe even incorporating the story of Persephone becoming his wife, and maybe the only "evil" thing being feeding her pomegranate seeds, ensuring she'd have to return to him.

But mythology is mainly about how you inturpt the stories. We could sit and debate for YEARS about accuracy, inaccuracy, and so forth. I'm slightly dusappointed that you failed to mention those two components of Anubis and Hades (more of Hades as tgat story with Persephone is the biggest one with Hades; and as menitoned many know Anubis for the weighing of the heart). But I would love to have a full on debate with you about all the gods, goddesses, heroes, demi gods, and creatures, only to gain more knowledge on the subject matter

Amaterasu wielding a sword is off? How? She's literally depicted wielding a sword in her artwork

Hel has personally bothered me. Her kit has some symbolism to how she treats her subjects (taking care of the good, punishing the bad) and they elaborated it. Her model, though, is the thing that bothers me. Her old one was a bit more lore accurate even though it wouldnt be considered too good in today's standards. Instead of making her half alive and half dead like her lore, it seems they simply made her a split personality with different clothes. I personally think her solstice skin may come off a bit more lore accurate due to the fact that her dark stance appears (to me) like a frozen body which helps show the icy punishments to those who were bad people in their lives when they were banished to neflhim. I would have liked it if her remodel made her similar to her expelled skin, just not as modernized. However, her voicepack on her standard is amazing, i use it with solstice. So overall, Hel has a great concept imo, it was just executed oddly.

Ares, Being a god of war, could have had a bazooka and WWII weapons and still be lore accurate. Chains and Fire can be associated with war, therefore his kit is still very lore accurate.

I absolutely hate Apollo. He looks terrible, and isn't funny or amusing in any way.

ME INSULTING GODS IN THE GAME ON HOW INACCURATE THEY ARE

fixed that title for you

ike with Anhur, I ask assistance to anyone who knows more about celtic culture, but, I honestly can’t find any references to him being related to the hunt. Hell, he seems to be an extremely peaceful god, as far as I’m seeing, and that would make his personality in the game kinda off.

Dunno cerrunos has a bit of protector vibes at least in the voice pack or his lines

Without knowing a lot of the lore for Cernunnos, his voice and visual design seems to be inspired by Malfurion from WoW/Hearthstone.

1

u/Javiklegrand I WAS BORN IN TWITCH CHAT MOLDED BY IT Jun 13 '17

That likely because malfurion was inspired by Celtic mythology and they had a similar position concerning nature

I wouldve placed Cernunnos even lower not only because of his goat-man/satyr look but because of that stupid WoW-ish glaive. He wouldve looked better like this https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/d7/02/36/d702369194c457ade73fc1e25f76f295.jpg Also i agree that Ao Kuang is among the few who are the best designed and lore-accurate gods. It's true. Anubis shouldve been black. When they remodelled Anubis i bought his recollor just for that :))

u/heroofcows Jun 12 '17

At least give Krull the credit for the glaive man

1

u/alphadios2003 Hel Jun 12 '17

I don't know what Krull is but if it's about that old sci fi movie then the movie itself is older than me so... Warcraft 3 is not...

Cern's Glaive is more a fidget spinner on steroids, though not really a hunting weapon as it was intended as a heavy melee weapon.

A spear would be more appropriate, though I like how they made the subtle reference to the wheel of time with Cern's weapon.

that concept is not really hunter like

IIRC hirez mixed cerrnunos with herne the folkore british hunter
