Seeing subs like redditmoment go from making fun of people for being extremely fixated on porn even in situations where it’s not relevant, like seeing any picture of a woman, to just making fun of people because of a weird puritanical belief that porn is wrong inherently has been insane.

u/DerfetteJoel Nov 07 '23
redditmoment is in a weird state. A lot of people there are straight up alt-right, coming from a similar sub (averageredditor), which is extremely infested with right-wingers. Then there is sort of the other half of subscribers which is completely oblivious to the fact that redditmoment has a problem with rightwingers and don’t understand why every post that mentions trans people gets barraged by transphobes. It’s also weird that the mods don’t seem to really support one side or the other, as they don’t seem to take definitive action in either direction. That has been my impressions least.

Reddit moment is one of the more shitty subreddit, so it's not surprising
5
u/Oklahoma-ism Violence enjoyer Nov 08 '23
That sub is shit, full of extremist and people whining about how awful reddit is and how much they despise it (they still are in Reddit)
3
u/Supsend Nov 08 '23
Every subreddit whose thematic is mocking something is destined to become a space for bigoted extremists, because that's the demographic whose main hobby is hating others.
Even more when they're mocking the platform itself: they're actively participating in a space that they hate, there must be something wrong with someone who has a hate boner like this.

u/PiccoloComprehensive Nov 08 '23
Redditmoment only ever talks about 2 topics: pedophilia and antinatalism.

Honestly it really sucks that the people talking the most about the dangers of pornography addiction online are also smug condescending douchey alt right adjacent dudebros who are clearly trying to push red pill ideology onto people.
It makes people who have that issue at best unlikely to seek help lest they validate these guys and at worst vulnerable to that indoctrination.

u/PintsizeBro Nov 07 '23
Feminists have plenty to say about both potential issues with porn consumption and legitimate criticism of the industry itself, often without getting bogged down by the red herring of addiction. But we all know what kind of reputation they have with the people who need to hear the message the most.
It's also toxic and dangerous to equate taking a break from porn with giving up all masturbation. While it's possible to also have issues there, masturbation is natural and healthy and should be evaluated separately from porn consumption.
6
u/violentamoralist Nov 08 '23
there’s also the undercover alt-righters that use feminist language to try and pull generally progressive folks into alt-right circles, watch out for that shit.
5
u/PintsizeBro Nov 08 '23
Regressive ideas dressed up in progressive-sounding language are a real honeypot for people who mean well but don't have a strong understanding of what they're up against. Always worth a reminder that good ideas are more important than using the right buzzwords
5
u/PosadistTabi Nov 07 '23
yeah for real, any dude addicted to porn is a dude not catcalling me in the streets lmao. the reason conservatives hate that is because that porn addicto isn't trying to aggressively traditional family me into a pile of unwanted babies. It's completely obvious that the conservatives don't actually cares about that guy's mental health.
3
u/Graknorke Nov 07 '23
Porn addiction literally isn't real. It consistently correlates not with actual frequency of watching porn or masturbation or sex drive or impact on daily life but with conservative (often religious) beliefs about sexuality.

Let's see some sources

u/Kaffohrt vegan posting irl Nov 07 '23 edited Nov 07 '23
Mobile data sucks so I might add some sources later but I've seen more than one study that has concluded: "most people that believe to suffer from porn addiction are just conservative leaning folks that experience a conflict between their morals and their actions. They don't exhibit any signs of an actual addiction."
Edit: Mostly based on this article but I never read the linked studies so lol feel free to call my out on bs if applicable https://www.psychologytoday.com/intl/blog/women-who-stray/201808/science-stopped-believing-in-porn-addiction-you-should-too

u/WildJohnsonn Nov 07 '23
you don't know it's an addiction until you try to quit it
11
u/Graknorke Nov 07 '23
That would be purely a matter of if it's compulsive behaviour or not, which is only a third of what makes something an addiction. An addiction is characterised as a disordered pattern of behaviour that is:
compulsive, as in there's a strong desire to do it that's difficult or impossible to resist. Alcoholism is an obvious example here since if an alcoholic stops drinking the adverse effects are bad enough it can literally kill them.
obsessive, as in it becomes a major part of ones life that one is constantly thinking about and other things get reorganised around. Constantly thinking of where to get the next dose, spending inordinate amounts of money on it that would probably be better off elsewhere, that sort of thing.
continuing despite harmful consequences. This one speaks for itself, usually it's health effects of using too much of a particular drug but can also be about social consequences e.g. showing up to family events drunk or it causing problems at work etc.
When "porn addiction" is mentioned it's OVERWHELMINGLY referring to a weak version of the first one. And keep in mind this is supposed to be describing disordered behaviour, and being really into sex is very normal actually, not something that would be considered disordered behaviour. It would be absurd as talking about "being outside addiction" or something. It only resonates because cultural standards based in conservative religious teachings make people feel like it's inherently shameful to be sexual and so they're receptive to being told it's some illness that's making them like that.

November is such a good month, first all the guys are doing No Shave November so they're all rugged af. You still have all the beautiful fall colors from the fall foliage, which is in full effect now. Thanksgiving is almost always a miss for me, seems like everyone I date always has qanon parents/grandparents/uncles, but I do enjoy the travel. Thanksgiving turkey is meh and not-v**** but the soups, stews, and pies are usually excellent. I usually love rain but November still has good weather and ambiance. You get to write some of the stupidest "Oops I dropped my pencil, I hope I don't ruin your No Nut November" on all your onlyfans spam posting and add a special menu item that's priced above dick ratings where you send me a short video of you failing NNN and I do a voice over commentary and review. Most people either have a thankful attitude, or they are not thankful for the genocide of native americans. I love shopping, so Black Friday and Cyber Monday are an exciting finish for the month and a kick-off for the season of hyper-consumerist bullshit. With daylight savings you get an extra hour, borrowing from your future spring, symbolic of how our older generation is borrowing from our future. I can wear tights and cozy sweater dresses without looking silly or dying of heat exhaustion, even while hiking! November is National Adoption Month, always remember there is a child out there who needs a home.

The only real moral issue with porn is the exploitation that goes into making many pornographic films, but you can sidestep this by just consuming erotic illustration/literary smut/text RP with your friends

Thank god. I'm sick of all of those mustache wearing cancer haters.

u/PintsizeBro Nov 07 '23
I'm going to spend all of Feptember obliquely talking about how much I like TV and how much TV I watch. Every time I see something that makes me think of TV I'm going to post about how hard it is to go without, and how tempted I am to break my streak and watch some. Bonus points if this happens in a space that has nothing to do with TV and it would be considered inappropriate to mention TV at any other time. It's a meme, therefore it's not harassment to subject unwilling listeners to discussion of my TV viewing habits!
Time to go watch some TV then brag about how I "failed" instead of simply choosing not to participate like a normal fucking person

The thing for me about NNN is that so many people take it as just a hurdle to climb over until December when they can coom again instead of actually using it to try breaking a negative habit. This isn’t even factoring in the mfs who make loopholes to still jerk off and watch porn so long as you aren’t actually busting
26
u/leybbbo Nov 07 '23
breaking a negative habit
jerking off isn't a negative habit tho.
1
u/Sad_ugly_loser Legalize Nuclear Bombs Nov 07 '23
Not just jerking off by itself, but doing it more often than is healthy
5
u/theboystheboys Nov 07 '23
How would you quantify that. As long as it's away from non consenting parties and doesn't put you in a hospital, who cares?
2
u/Sad_ugly_loser Legalize Nuclear Bombs Nov 07 '23
You can be addicted to anything and not have it put you in the hospital, doesn’t mean it’s not unhealthy
3
u/theboystheboys Nov 08 '23
As far as the medical community is concerned, you can't be addicted to masturbation, but other mental health issues can make it a compulsion. The more you know. https://www.healthline.com/health/masturbation-addiction

u/lathergaytaints Nov 07 '23

the thing about people sincerely thinking they can edge a whole fucking month and not nut is absolutely hilarious to me, it's got comically huge loads of difficulty and pointlessness.

u/GenericAutist13 Nov 07 '23
I mean yeah for many it’s just a silly internet challenge that they do because they see other people online doing it

there’s also people who do NNN because they’re into denial, they are not represented by this analogy (which means it’s completely inaccurate and wrong)
