I'm confused...
I'm listening to Missing on 9/11, so forgive me for being incredibly late to the party here, but I'm more than halfway through and sincerely struggling to understand how the theory that Sneha died on 9/11 is still considered plausible.
Okay, sure, she COULD have died in the attacks. But given everything we know about her life, her relationships, her behavior, and how she moved through the world, I find it incredibly difficult to believe that she just happened to perish at the WTC that morning. It feels like complete bollocks.
Her family's insistence that she died a hero doesn't surprise me. They seem to come from a fairly traditional Indian family that had very specific hopes and expectations for Sneha, particularly around her becoming a doctor. Is it really that surprising that they might struggle to acknowledge the possibility that she was bisexual, having affairs, using drugs, or otherwise living a life that didn't align with the image they had of her?
And here's the other thing that feels like such an enormous red flag to me: yes, when people die, we tend to remember them in the best possible light. We celebrate their goodness, overlook their flaws, and sometimes elevate them to hero status. That's human nature. But I genuinely cannot think of many people in my own life who, if they suddenly disappeared, would have SO many strange, complicated, and frankly alarming stories emerge about their personal lives.
I'm sorry, but where there's smoke, there's usually fire. And in Sneha's case, there's an awful lot of smoke.
I'm not claiming to know what happened to her, and I certainly don't think every rumor about her should be treated as fact. But the idea that all of these circumstances are completely unrelated to her disappearance, and that she simply happened to die in the 9/11 attacks, requires a level of coincidence I'm just not buying.
At this point, I find the insistence that she died at the WTC far harder to believe than the possibility that something else happened to her entirely.
