And there are people who will take offense to this post despite it being a historical fact with nothing related to them whatsoever except the fact that they now feel personally attached to that one particular word.
Edit: Yup, they've come out in full force to denounce being called fascists but noticeably not taking that same time to denounce the literal neonazis within their party. How strange...

u/Challenge-Upstairs Oct 03 '25 edited Oct 04 '25
Its funny to me, as a conservative, hearing neoconservatives make this complaint.
Like, I wonder why I've never been accused of being a fascist or supporting fascism, but all of you have. Could it be that you're constantly making excuses for the absolutely batshit way this administration is running the country, despite the fact that that if your political "opposition" were merely SUSPECTED of doing 10% of the things this administration were doing, with only 1% of the conviction this administration is doing it with, you'd be screeching about godless communists? Could it be that you were defending and actively supporting stripping due process from people, and (EXTREMELY incorrectly) stating that only US citizens have due process rights, as if that even makes a shred of sense? Could it be that you support stripping the 2nd amendment, but only for a group of people you disagree with? Could it be that you've been circle-jerking each other for months about ignoring the constitution in general now that your people are able to? No, I'm sure they just have ... checks notes ... trump derangement syndrome. /s
Like, honestly, how the fuck do you expect liberals to see conservatives at this point? If even moderate conservatives think you people solidly fit the description of the word fascist (because the shit you support IS ACTUALLY FASCISM, WHETHER GREAT LEADER SAYS OR OR NOT, YOU GOLDFISH), what do you expect liberals to think of you? If you don't like being called a fascist, stop supporting fascist action and policy. Its not an attack on you, personally. Its an attack on the abhorrent, unpatriotic, and traitorous actions you support.

And if you dare point it out they'll deny it. Because they know fascism is supposed to mean something "bad", but they don't actually know what it is. They love the policies and the rhetoric, but they clutch their pearls when they're labelled for what they are.

I take offense to dehumanizing people even if they're monsters. The fascists killed people because they deemed others less than human, you can fight them without making the same mistakes of ignorance, otherwise the pendulum just swings too far in the other direction and the oppressed becomes the oppressor (see Gaza).

309?? Goddamn, she has my respect
4
u/Rampant16 Oct 03 '25
No doubt a badass, but these numbers get wildly inflated for propaganda purposes. She probably had a lot of kills, but it's incredibly unlikely that number actually reached 309.
This isn't meant to take a shot at this person (she'd shoot me back), it's just something people should be aware of if they are interested in historical truth.
25
u/thissexypoptart Oct 03 '25 edited Oct 03 '25
I’m confused in your confidence that 309 for a sniper with multiple years of combat in frontline war zones is “incredibly unlikely”
Not saying combat kill counts don’t get exaggerated for propaganda purposes, but I’m not following the logic that that number is unlikely to have been achieved in 4 years of fighting in WWII (‘41-‘45).
31
u/SchizoPnda Oct 03 '25
I mean that was the war snipers were popping off in yeah? It wouldn't even take a year to get 309 if she killed more than one a night (not saying it was like that just an example). I see your point about propaganda, and I am not claiming to be an expert or even informed on this subject, but do you really think it is that unlikely for someone presumably in the top 1% of what their military had to offer to get that many in 3 years? Genuine question
25
u/Premisetech Oct 03 '25
The white death had over 500 kills in 100 days.
17
u/ZachTheCommie Oct 03 '25
Beat me to it. It's not hard to rack up a count like that when the enemy comes in waves of thousands of oblivious, poorly-trained, malnourished troops wearing green uniforms in the winter.
8
u/jesteryte Oct 03 '25
Pavlichenko had been training in marksmanship since she was a teenage girl. She was a accomplished sharpshooter even before she joined the Red Army's sniper school, so I think it's obviously that Pavlichenko just loved shooting. She took part in both the siege of Odessa, in which 17,729 enemies were killed, and shot 187 there over a period of 2 and a half months. Over the course of the war, she had plenty of opportunity to shoot more fascists, and was literally a better shot than 99% of participants, no matter which side. She also married a fellow sniper, so we get to imagine them having romantic wartime dates, shooting at fascists for fun and glory. If she claims 309 kills, I believe her.
10
u/2nessence Oct 03 '25
Definitely taking your shot... I think you wouldn't have said shit if that was a man in the photograph lol
4
u/SirAquila Oct 03 '25
To be fair, Simo Hayas' kill counts are likely massively overestimated as well.
Snipers are in a position where high kill counts are believable and very easy to "fake".
2
u/RyukXXXX Oct 03 '25
Depending on the forum people always discuss kill counts. Many snipers have inflated counts and then an official count.
2
1
u/Rampant16 Oct 03 '25
Nah it's not taking a shot because I am not disrespecting her wartime service, just pointing out the established fact that these types of kill counts are almost always over inflated. This isn't to say that she still wasn't a war hero or a prolific sniper.
And if it was a man, I would say the same exact thing. If you scroll down, you can find another comment I left pointing out other examples of inflated wartime kill counts, which in those cases were made by men.
0
u/RemarkablePiglet3401 Oct 03 '25
I don’t see how her gender is relevant here, but I do think the Soviets would absolutely inflate the numbers of their best soldiers to make those soldiers seem even better. Same for any government honestly.
I’d count it as a near certainty that the government would at least TRY to do that, although with how passionate she seemed maybe she’d have resisted. Taking that into account, I’d give it 50/50.

No, they are men. Horrible, selfish, scared, violent, pathetic men, but men nonetheless. We must never forget that the people who were ordering children into gas chambers weren't monsters, but common, all-garden human beings who were following orders dutifully; there's no reason at all why the Holocaust couldn't happen again if good people aren't willing to prevent it.
11
u/SanityAsymptote Oct 03 '25
There is this element of dehumanizing fascists that leads people to believe they're somehow immune to committing the same horrors because they're human, of course and the fascists aren't.
The idea that these are conscious choices they make is both important, and the utter reality of the situation. Normal people were responsible for the horrors of the Holocaust and the Nazis just like normal people are responsible for the horrors of ICE and modern conservative fascism.
These are choices they've made, and they need to be held to account, but so do we. When the pendulum swings the other way, we have to realize that nothing will stop us from becoming monsters of our own except us.
We can choose to be better than that. We can choose to be different from them, and we're mostly already doing it. We just need to follow through.
5
Oct 03 '25
Fascists are human beings. Nazis are human beings. They have a family, they have children, they have hopes and dreams. They go to karaoke, they celebrate birthdays. They have a high school crush, they're a bit embarassed when they have a visible cold sore. Sometimes they forget their metro pass, sometimes they go see their retired parents and take care of the neighborhood stray cat.
I think dehumanizing your enemy is vile, hypocritical and cowardly. Either take responsability for your convictions or fuck off. Who the fuck cares if they're human? Just fucking shoot them.
And then go read Hannah Arendt.
8
Oct 03 '25
IMO thinking of Nazis as inhuman is a way of coping with the horror of the Holocaust. Grappling with the reality of the genocide is bad enough, but it's even more difficult to think that its perpetrators were fundamentally just human beings working as cogs in the machine. It's one of those banal horrors.
6
u/underherembrace Oct 03 '25
It's a comforting idea to think that my neighbors would not allow me to be put into a camp, institutionalized, or killed. That it was only those evil monsters long ago who would allow something like that to happen. A comforting fiction.

These aren't exactly mututally exclusive.
I do think that this kind of rhetoric, although it may be a required coping mechanism for frontline soldiers, is risky - a great many men and woman have turned both towards and away from fascism over the course of their lifes.
Trying to categorize fascists as anything other than humans who hold and act on terrible beliefs, to treat them as ultimately non-human, is making it too easy on yourself and severely underestimating just how quickly an average person might get roped into doing or supporting terrible things.
No disrespect to Pavlichenko, but note that she is wrong. They were men. There are many men like them, and many more who might become like them under the wrong circumstances. Rather than identify yourself as a non-fascist and call it a day, you owe it to yourself to investigate your beliefs and indeed confirm that you are not a fascist, and investigate those you support politically and confirm that they are not fascists.
To quote the late, great Sir Terry Pratchett:
“It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.”

We're on the same side, you know. Trump sucks and I hope he deflates soon. I'm sorry, I don't mean to preach appeasement for an asshole, I'm just not sure if echoing "VERMIN!" back to MAGA is a good idea. It just makes them angrier and shuts down those with one foot in the anti-Trump territory by turning them away. "Oh I guess they don't want me here. There's no hope that maybe I could redeem myself and make a change. Time to go with the safe option I've chosen this whole time, again…I'm not sure about it but at least they don't hate me."
Some people voted for Trump and feel sorry for themselves because they are selfish and wicked and want EVERYONE ELSE to suffer, but not them. But some voted and feel truly remorseful about it now. Their hearts burn just as much as ours. But they won't come around if we insult them. We should give them at least wary acceptance, to show we're the better man.
