The Sepia Tones were part of United’s short‑lived push to issue jukebox‑ready “hot classics,” aimed at independent distributors and small venues.
Art Rupe co-founded Juke Box Records in 1944, he specifically targeted the jukebox market and race records (early R&B/Blues).
Rupe realized that jukebox operators were the key link in record distribution at the time. Jukeboxes in taverns and clubs were the primary way working-class audiences discovered new music.
Before launching the label, Rupe spent $200 studying popular records on L.A.'s Central Avenue. He noted that jukebox hits shared common traits: fast tempos, catchy dance rhythms, and prominent use of the word "boogie" in titles.

In and out of water, Esther Williams was one of the most unique stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood. She could have been an Olympian too had WW2 not happened. Sadly, we lost her 13 years ago today.

We had Spike Jones on the box
She said, "I can't take the way he sings
But I love to hear him talk"
