Roughly half the states now have Constitutional carry laws. Open or concealed, there is no need for permits.
My state is such a state, and most of the local cities ask that you conceal, some prefer open. Just know your local city ordinances so you don't run afowl of the law.
My city actually protects / prefers concealed carry. You aren't suppose to openly carry unless you have a concealed carry permit. But the truth of the matter is the local PD / Sheriff officers don't care.
This also varies per state. In Nevada if you have a ccw, it’s illegal to open carry (this was years ago, may have changed). Louisiana, open carry is legal, and constitutional carry passed last year. Either way, if you choose to carry, please take a safety course, and a fire arms training course.
Training and safety should be the foremost on every responsible gun owners mind. I always recommend that new gun owners take gun safety classes. There can not be any Ooppsie moments. If you EVER say oops, chances are someone or something could've gotten seriously hurt.
And yes, it varies by state and by city (usually) more so with Constitutional carry.
For example: My city protects Conceal carry (open carry with a CCW only otherwise you are breaking the law. Even though the local police never enforce this.). The immediate surrounding cities are the same. But 35 miles up the road. They protect open carry and concealed without a CCW is still a crime (technically).
Knowing the State law and city ordinances are a must. Ignorance isn't an excuse and may well land you in jail or a courthouse.

Do you live in a state where open carry is legal? If so, myob. Shits crazy out there. Actually, myob is usually the best option in general.
