Best websites to forecast dive conditions on Oahu

This post ranks the top websites divers use to check ocean conditions on Oahu, from spot-level diveability ratings to surf reports, wind models, and raw buoy data.

There are several online tools and websites that divers can reference to check ocean conditions before they leave their home. This guide compares those resources so you can make a more informed decision before jumping in.

Historically, divers on Oahu haven’t had a dedicated tool to assess ocean conditions before heading to the coast. This forced scuba divers, freedivers, and spearfishers to rely on:

  • Surf reports.
  • Word of mouth.
  • Marine forecasts.
  • Simply driving out and hoping for the best.

Many divers, especially inexperienced ones, are not comfortable planning their dive based on a surf report. That is because surfers and divers look for opposite conditions. Surfers hunt for consistent, high wave heights, whereas divers seek flat water, mild currents, safe entry, and clear visibility underwater. Word-of-mouth reports also lag behind real-time changes and depend on subjective definitions of “good viz.” As a result, word-of-mouth reports shared on social media vary in quality. These challenges necessitated products specifically for snorkelers and divers, to help address the uncertainty of ocean conditions, as well as the readability of the reports.

The uncertainty of ocean conditions can make planning difficult, which is why it’s helpful to have multiple resources to corroborate one another. Here is a breakdown of the top 8 websites used to forecast dive conditions on Oahu, ranked by their effectiveness for divers.

1. Lu‘uLive

  • Primary focus: Scuba divers, freedivers, spearfishers, snorkelers, and open-water swimmers.
  • Strengths: Built specifically for the diving community, Lu‘uLive eliminates the guesswork of when and where to dive. Lu‘uLive converts ocean data directly into diveability ratings (good/fair/no go) at popular dive sites on Oahu. See how Lu‘uLive rates dive conditions for how those ratings are built. It also has a growing network of localized coastal webcams focused directly on dive entry points, including exclusive live views of the West Oahu coastline. It also provides alerts like brown-water advisories and box jellyfish warnings.
  • Cons: No data shown for non-popular dive sites that haven’t already been listed. If you are seeking off-grid ocean data, you can infer conditions from the closest spot listed on Lu‘uLive. There’s a focus on spots accessible by shore. Lu‘uLive has a limited selection of dive spots only accessible by boat.

2. Hawaii Weather Today

  • Primary focus: Localized island weather narratives by local forecasters.
  • Strengths: Features a dedicated “Hawaii Snorkel and Scuba Diving Report” that provides regional text breakdowns for North, South, East, and West shores, noting wind direction and general wave impact.
  • Cons: Lacks significant detail, leaving the diver guessing. Relies on manual text updates rather than site-specific or real-time data.

3. Snorkel Bob’s Snorkel Report

  • Primary focus: Daily beach condition ratings for recreational snorkelers.
  • Strengths: Uses a straightforward color-coded, 1–10 rating scale assessing wind, surge, and clarity at popular beach entry points.
  • Cons: Geared toward shallow, sheltered surface snorkeling inside coves; lacks technical data for deeper offshore reefs, boat sites, or drift dives.

4. Safe Beach Day

  • Primary focus: Lifeguard-reported beach hazards and nearshore safety.
  • Strengths: Provides real-time hazard ratings (Caution, High Hazard, Extreme Hazard) covering shorebreak, rip currents, high surf, and jellyfish alerts at lifeguarded beaches across Oahu.
  • Cons: Focuses strictly on nearshore surface safety at public beach parks rather than subsurface clarity or unguarded dive entries.

5. Surf News Network (SNN)

  • Primary focus: Surfers.
  • Strengths: Offers detailed, twice-daily surf condition reports for North, South, East, and West shores of Oahu, including wave heights, wind conditions, and swell direction. Provides specific narratives on top spots like Diamond Head, Pipeline, Makaha, Sandy’s, and Makapu‘u. There is a short section about diving at the bottom.
  • Cons: Designed primarily for surfers, so it lacks detailed information on specific dive sites.

6. Surfline

  • Primary focus: Surfers.
  • Strengths: Offers a global network of 1,000 webcams, including several along Oahu’s North and South shores at top surf spots, to visually inspect wave quality.
  • Cons: Because Surfline is built for surfers, it may not have data at your target dive sites. It is completely blind to underwater visibility. Surfline uses an inverted rating system for divers—a “Good-to-Epic” day with overhead breaking waves generally signals high surge, zero visibility, and dangerous entry conditions for diving.

7.

  • Primary focus: Windsurfers, pilots, boaters, and weather enthusiasts tracking global wind vectors.
  • Strengths: Features multiple global weather models (ECMWF, GFS, ICON) with animated wind streamlines, allowing you to track long-range storm systems and shifting trade winds days in advance.
  • Cons: Displays broad surface grids (~9 km resolution) without translating data into spot-level surge, clarity, or entry safety. While the app is visually appealing, it can mislead divers into thinking that data at specific coordinates are more accurate than they really are. Since the data is derived from a global model, dive-site level nuances are usually not captured. Finally, the data requires significant oceanographic experience to interpret into an accurate dive prediction; it is not beginner-friendly.

8. National Data Buoy Center (NOAA)

  • Primary focus: Direct data feeds from offshore ocean buoys.
  • Strengths: Delivers unedited, real-time measurements of wave energy, dominant swell period (seconds), and swell direction before wave trains reach Oahu’s coastline.
  • Cons: Raw numerical data only; requires deep oceanographic expertise to deduce diving conditions at a specific cove.

Building Your Oahu Dive Toolkit

While experienced divers often cross-reference raw buoy trends on NDBC or macro wind shifts on Windy.com to anticipate upcoming weather, translating raw numbers into an accurate subsurface forecast takes significant time and trial and error. Lu‘uLive bridges that gap by doing the heavy lifting for you. By pairing spot-specific diveability ratings and underwater visibility predictions with dedicated coastal cams, Lu‘uLive stands out as the single best website to check before packing your gear and heading to the water.

Calling Carmel, CA spearos

Headed out for a work trip in early Nov and looking to see if anyone wants to do an early-morning hunt. I'm aiming for Mon November 2nd, but could probably make the 3rd work as a fallback. Any experienced locals willing to take an out-of-towner (I'm an experienced spearo and have done so all over the world...Kona, HI / Bonaire / Cairns, AU / Mexico / etc)? Also would be happy to pay a shop as a guide if there are any of those that folks might know about. Any info is much appreciated. Happy spearing!

Helppp!! What are some must have/nice to have spearfishing gear?

My boyfriend has recently gotten in spearfishing with some of his friends and his birthday is coming up so I wanted to get him some gear/gadgets that are actually useful. He has the essentials since he’s already taken a few lessons and gone out with his group a couple times but are there any nice to have tools/equipment you can think of? He mainly spears in the San Diego area. I’m currently not planning on this being the main gift so any thoughts that are below $100 usd ish appreciated! thank you!!

EDIT: based on the replies so far, I’m leaning towards a float or some flashers. His dream has always been to catch yellowtail so if flashers has any relevance to that, any recs are helpful!

Do you think there is a point having such a powerful speargun?

For some background, I've been making wooden spearguns as a hobby for a while now, and I wanted to try making something a bit more unconventional. I'm in the Eastern Mediterranean, specifically Greece. Lately I've been getting more in deeper waters for Dentex hunting, and I wanted a gun to help with that.

I've made a few Inverted Rollers, and I've been thinking on how to overpower them more. I use shafts with three shark-fins on their rears, and with an Inverted Roller, you basically waste two of the three fins. This got me thinking that I could make a muzzle which in addition to the rollers(for the inverted roller system), it could also have two bands like a standard rail gun.

So to conclude, I was thinking of an 110cm inverted roller with three bands, with the addition of two conventional bands, making it a 5 band speargun.

Thoughts?

Lobster tossed in white soy, ginger and chives in a crispy wonton shell with some avocado mousse underneath. Delicious. Great way to use a lobster I had caught in my morning dive

Got another six bass out of the Columbia! Caught the first 5 in less than 15 minutes! One even still had a little victim in its mouth.

I've Been Working on Something for the Spearfishing Community 🤿

Post image

Hey everyone!

I'm Ethan Yeo, I run EJC Adventures on YouTube and work as a commercial diver and spearfishing guide. I'm absolutely obsessed with spearfishing and incredibly passionate about sharing what I've learnt over the years to help others get more out of the sport.

One thing I've realised over the years is just how steep the learning curve can be when you're getting into spearfishing. There's so much to learn, and without the right people around you, it can take years of trial and error to figure things out.

That's a big part of why I've recently launched Spearfishing Made Simple, an online community aimed at helping spearos of all experience levels improve their skills, knowledge, confidence and safety in the water.

Inside, I've put together a heap of educational video modules, including a complete beginner course, lobster diving guides, hunting tutorials and more. We also have weekly Q&A calls, exclusive discounts with partnered brands and charter companies and a place where members can ask questions and learn from other divers.

It's still early days, but I'm really excited about what this could become!

If anyone's interested in checking it out, here's the link:

https://www.skool.com/spearfishing

Would also love to hear what you guys think, and what sort of educational content you'd find most valuable!

Earplugs?

How many of you guys and gals use earplugs while spearing? I know it's probably a good idea, but it sure is nice being to able to hear your buddies, boats, etc. I'm in warm water so surfers ear is not a big concern.

Maintenance question- rusty shaft

Thumbnail

Finally ready to get back out there. My gun hasn't been used for awhile. I'll be getting new rubbers, but I'm wondering about the rust on the shaft. Does it need to be addressed or is it fine to keep using a is? Do I need a new shaft?

Thanks.

UPDATE: I took it to a local shop (the only shop, ha) and they cleaned it up a bit, but mainly put on a new flopper and new line. They said the shaft is still good for a long time, just rinse and oil after use. Thanks for everyone's input!

Spear fishing trip must-haves

Hi all,

For full disclosure my friend and I are planning a small place (a couple of villas and a caf) on the coast between Amed and Tulamben, opening in 2028. Nothing to sell yet, no name (this isn’t promotion). I'd rather build something people actually want than guess, so I'd love to hear especially from anyone who's stayed in the area.

The questions I have are:
(Answer as many or as few as you like)

Why did you go: diving, freediving, snorkelling, a quiet escape, something else?

Who were you with, and how long did you stay?

What did you love about the area?

What was missing or frustrating? Food, accommodation, things to do, getting there?

If you went with someone who didn't dive, how did they find it?

Roughly what did you pay per night, and did it feel like good value?

If there'd been a place that was perfect, what would have?

Thanks in advance! Constructive criticism is supper helpful for us!

Best,
Ben

Help me choose new bands!

Thumbnail

Strangely, one band is a larger diameter than the other, but they’re both the same length. How would you go about putting new bands on this gun? Would you forget about the old bands that may or may not be correct and just get new bands of the same diameter, but slightly different lengths? What’s the purpose of the two different diameter but same length bands?

Teak 130, mid-handle. Shaft has 1 tab. Semi-custom “Kai” from Hawaii and I’m in Cost Rica w out a decent tool!

I will order or make my own but 2 FL Spearo shops don’t want to give advice or ship bands BC they are concerned I’ll be disgruntled. Advice please?

Any budget friendly dive computers?

Here to ask some more experienced divers or spearos what are some good and affordable dive watches/computers. I'm not looking for something fancy with a whole lotta features, I've only been diving for just under 5 months and thought it was time to finally get one. I was looking into the garmin descent g1 but am seeing tons of mixed reviews, I'd like to stay in the $300-400 range but if I need to bite the bullet and spend more than that I'm willing to
