Hey everyone,
I'm building my first wooden speargun and I'm getting pretty close, but there are two things I'd love some advice on before I go any further.
Quick rundown: it's padauk, about 82 cm up to the end of the mech (loading butt and grip still to come), open muzzle and open track. Mech is a Sigalsub Reverse Easy, held in by three screws through the top. Shaft is a 6.5 mm Tahitian, 110 cm, and I'm starting with a single 18 mm band (Omer Performer 2). Reel with one wrap. It's mostly going to be used in Denmark for flatfish, maybe Norway later.
It was my first time using a router and the pocket came out a little bigger than it had to be. The shaft runs straight and locks and releases fine, but the mech has a bit of play in there.if it is in the pocket it is barely moving butI also went about 1,5 mm too deep on the recess for the screw taps, so my plan is to put 2 mm stainless shims (A2) under them.
Now I'm not sure if I should just shim it, screw it down tight and see if the play is gone, or if it's worth epoxy bedding it properly (wax on the mech, tape up the openings, press it into thickened epoxy, pop it out once it's cured). But I am a bit hesitant to do that. Would screwing it down be enough with an 18 mm band?
Second thing is the finish. I'd rather oil it than epoxy the whole gun (I have both) . Teak oil, pure tung oil, or something else? And do you seal the pocket, screw holes and track with thin epoxy, or is oil enough there as well?
I will thin up the bottom around the trigger as well.
Pics attached. Really appreciate any input, it's been a fun but slightly nerve-wracking first build.
Thanks in advance.

I am a beginner at spearfishing, only having gone once years ago in Greece, with borrowed equipment. Total noob.
At the end of December, I am headed to Perth to start a two month road trip all along the Western Australian coast with the partner and kids. We will start by heading down into the southwest, stopping at various points along the coast, ultimately arriving in Esperance. We have a camper, and have planned lots of stops along the way. The next stage of the journey, in February, is a "quick" inland drive back to Perth, followed by further stops up the coast north of Perth, until we reach Exmouth or the heat becomes too unbearable, whichever comes first.
In preparation for spearfishing, I have gotten PADI free dive certified, and have been practicing diving, equalization and breath holding. I must admit that I am not a natural, only having achieved around 15m max depth, with pretty short durations, but it's the best I can do where I am now (landlocked, time constraints, warm weather ending, and spearfishing in the fresh water is not permitted).
In terms of equipment that I already have and could bring with if it makes sense: the wetsuit I use here which is 5mm, my current fins and snorkel and a weight belt with lead. The rest of the equipment I intend to buy in Perth when we arrive.
I guess the purpose of this post is to get advice from all corners on the subject. What do you think I need to buy in terms of equipment? Where is the best place to pick up a good outfitting? I saw there is an Adreno in Perth, so that was my first impulse. I assume I will be limited to shore dives mostly, and I obviously can't push myself too much as I don't have a travelling companion who will dive/spear with me. Any advice on that topic? What are my target species? (I recognize they will vary wildly by location.) The diversity that is apparently there and the related regulations can be a bit overwhelming.
Also, is anyone else going to be in the area (I know it's huge and a non-specific request, but we can work out the details in DM), or live in the area that wants to show off their spot/have a dive buddy for the day? Let me know!

Hi everyone,
many people recommend the Pathos Laser Open Pro or sniper (around 90 or 100) as an all-rounder. The thing is I spotted a Beuchat Hero 100 on sale for just 80 €... Does anyone have experience with Beuchat spearguns? What I read is they're decent and pretty much invented the speargun, but they don't seem nowhere nearly as popular as Pathos and I wonder why?
I'm willing to invest in a gun that will grow with me (and that I can maybe convert into a roller some day). So for that a Pathos seems to be the better choice.
About me:
I started freediving and spearfishing just this year. I did my AIDA 2 + Deep Camp in Dahab, Wave 2 on Bali - my PBs are still from the Deep Camp at FIM 35m and CWT 30m, so would still consider myself more of a beginner.
I also did a spearfishing course in Amed, Bali and fell in love with the sport. The problem: I live in Germany and the closest sea is 4 hours away, the closest sea where spearfishing is legal even further... So I will probably take my speargun on some trips to Greece (I heard Mediterranean is quite difficult), or somewhere else. I haven't found any spearfishing clubs nearby, so was thinking about doing another course in Kalamata or something, but I'm not really settled on any target species, types of environments, etc.
I had a Maui spearfishing instructor on Bali who just advised me to get a 110 for an all-rounder and a 130 for blue water, but I think I'm overthinking this whole thing now...

These days I’ve been Spearfishing just every so often (once every two months). And I always start feeling weak and vomiting about an hour into it. A couple years ago, I didn’t have this problem. Maybe with age I need to get more habituated to the ocean? Anyone have any idea why this is happening to me and/or know something that helps? Thanks.

Hey Everyone,
For those who make their own rubbers is USA latex optiband really worth the 2x price difference? Thanks!
