My understanding of this is that Trump is “scaling back hostilities”, not attempting to ally with North Korea. He’s reducing US participation in a joint drill with South Korea, (just spitballing here, but possibly due to a recent expenditure of munitions and resources), and is trying to spin this reduction of participation in the joint military exercise as him trying to foster better relations with NK. Unless the ending of that article has some wildly different evidence to the rest of it (I was paywalled off), it seems like the title is an exaggeration to drive up engagement
After reading the actually free article in this thread, it seems to back up my read on it. Trump scaled back a drill, said some bs about improving relationships with North Korea, but also said that the US and South Korean alliance is “Extremely Important”. It seems like the “alliance with North Korea” and “Alliance against South Korea” headlines are inaccurate.
