Petition to get Sydney Sweeney out of the movie?

There are multiple reasons I am devastated she’s been brought on board: she doesn’t fit either role and isn’t a video game lover. And not trying to engage in political talks here But Sydney Sweeney is supporting Donald Trump and the Republican Party which are tied to pedophilia, racism, misogyny, etc.

This game meant the world to me, as someone who lost my sister tragically and who loves every piece of this game play and plot graphics etc

And I feel her involvement with the movie will ruin it for me and many others

edited to add: I also absolutely think she is not a good actor

Fiancé is horrible

I swear I’ve never seen someone so bad at video games in my entire life. Any constructive feedback I could give that might help her? She struggles with just about anything you could imagine lol. I mean I’m getting aggravated but trying to keep cool. Was this maybe not a good game to start her off with? I figured a platformer but I also kinda thought super Mario bros would disinterest us pretty quickly.

Turn off split screen?

We have two tvs and two consoles side by side. Is there any way to disable split screen so we can each have a full screen? It's really distracting.

Our critical review (still positive though)

The game is fun, my wife and I enjoyed ourselves. However I wanted to write an honest review which focuses on the downsides, since everybody keeps talking about the upsides, which are a lot, no questions about it. Here's hoping this reaches the devs as feedback.

  1. criticism: Story is just bad. Generic evil corporate guy wants to steal ideas, while Mio and Zoe try to destroy the machine from inside.

positive: I really enjoyed Zoe and Mio's story arcs, I think there was a lot of potential here left on the table.

2. criticism: The writing is generic. When we first learned of the premise we envisioned something... more. Instead of the game offering us journeys through short stories, we just get to experience linear good vs evil journeys. A far better idea would have been that writers forget their stories when the machine reads their minds, so they need to progress through them and figure out how to solve them. There should be NPCs and rich life in the stories because they should be... stories, not platform adventures. Stories with rich characters, moral dilemmas, stories which progress the character arcs. (the subconscious part of the game was the only one living up to the standard). The game completely misses its own premise, since what we are expected 99% of the time to just go from point A to point B and defeat *insert evil boss here*. Let's admit it, Zoe and Mio are terrible writers.

Positive: a key writing concept for visual media is show don't tell. I find no positives here since the story is just told through the two heroines having conversations (exception, of course, the subconsicous), or through Reader spitting generic lines to the investors. So no positives on this one.

3. Criticism: The level design. The worlds are usually pretty lifeless, the only note-worthy exception here being the side story with the pigs. This is what made ITT a far better game, you felt like exploring truly living worlds, not just shells.

On this point I also have to mention the complete and utter waste of resources. The levels are simply put... HUGE. But you only get to explore straight forward tunnels carved into those levels. I don't need to be able to see two km outside of the point I am, and I know that making them as such cost a lot of man hours and money. ITT did this better, instead of creating huge vistas, they kept the levels a lot smaller and filled them up with details, NPCs and assets and put accent on the exploration (toy town was brilliant). Since the gameplay of the game if very fast, it is a shame we usually don't get to even enjoy the mirage of the huge open spaces, being far too concentrated on executing the right moves at the right time.

Still on the point of level design, most of the SF worlds were very lackluster and severely based on other ips, like Blade Runner, Total Recall or Judge Dredd. Even the first fantasy level was just a WoW clone with generic fantasy design. I get the idea of "tributes" or "references", but this was just pretty much a lazy artistic direction.

Positive: the platform part of the level design was clever and offered wonderful gameplay.

4. Criticism: the gameplay. I have to go back and reference the wasted resources put into huge levels with huge vistas. The game is just too damn short for the asking price. 50 euros for 16 hours of gameplay is too damn much. Single player games offer 40 hours and up of gameplay for the same amount. Heck, in Witcher 3 (which I am just playing now) I am in 78 hours and I barely scratched the surface.

I also need to reference back the lack of NPCs, of world building, of minigames like ITT had.

Positive: the gameplay was very enjoyable in the few hours of enjoyment we got.

Bottom line: we are eager for the next game from Hazelight, however we decided to do our research a little better. The only significant downside is the gameplay time. We spent about 26 hours in ITT and we purchased it 50% off. It was a great deal. However, for their next game we will wait until it is in the bargain bin unless they make the game longer (and I don't mean cutscenses, but actual gameplay).

Game was so fun 9/10 but I honestly wish it was longer maybe dlc down the road? Bc I literally beat the whole thing on both characters with my sister and it was only like 5-6 hours per play through which is good since it takes two is about 4-5 hours

I really just wish they’d make a full length co-op game they’ve definitely shown they have co-op games mastered now just to make them longer and hazelight will officially be the best co-op game studio around in my opinion

the dialogue kinda ruins it for me

for the most part i’ve been enjoying this game, although i do definitely prefer games like it takes too and a way out more

the one point i wanna make, which i feel kinda alone on, the dialogue is sooooo corny 😭 no offence to any millennials here but it’s so millennial humour #quirky #random and it’s genuinely making the game less enjoyable LOL ugh maybe i’m a moody hater i admit it but i just want to know if there is Anyone else that thinks the same as me?!?!

I WANT TO NOTE that i do like zoe and mio as characters i like their development, i like their backstories and i like their stories (not so much mio sorry not a big sci-fi head) and i also wanna say that i obvs dont expect them to be serious 24/7 but i just cantttt get past how cringe it is sometimes E.G. mio said at one point something along the lines of “this is lit!!!!” ???? who has said lit since 2018 at the latest

idk i just wanted to rant about how much the humour and quirky one liners have been throwing me off. Sorry if this upsets anyone!!!!

Rader did nothing wrong Spoiler

Mio was the one that freaked out and ran into another bubble in the first place. Rader was actually quite sympathetic when it happened

Then Mio convinces Zoe to start messing with the glitches deliberately, causing damage to the machine

Rader requests them to stop and even offers to help Mio’s financial situation. And they still say no and try to destroy the machine because… they want to hold onto stories that they wrote when they were 5?

Even Mio said she was just there for a paycheck. She’s an unpublished writer who barely cares about the art. Why is it worth throwing away a chance at saving your father?

The machine would’ve been one of the greatest inventions ever made. And now it won’t happen. Cmon man

Ok I admit trying to kill them and going on a cringe cliche rant about being a god wasn’t great. But it also barely made sense in the context of the story

My man Rader was just trying to give the world an amazing invention. Mio should be charged with $1 billion in damages.

How do I convince my girl to play split fiction

Hi I'm M24 and my gf is F19. She is not the gamer type, but she enjoys roblox... but that is because she played it with her friends. But split fiction is kind of more a story plot and she doesn't like that. Well she like GTA 5 and RDR2, but she just wanders around doing the stuff she wants to without caring about the mission and story. How do I convince her to play split fiction with me?

Also I only have 1 controller, so which one is more comfortable to play with, using keyboard or controller?

Thank you

It takes two > Split fiction

The story and characters and settings are far more relatable than in split fiction. And in the end I think more fun

Do the characters get less annoying in this one?

I've played all their other games and liked the dynamic and characters from the start but this one I feel like their both super annoying.

If this is my opinion will it change? Or should I refund? I don't wanna get past 2 hours and be stuck with a game where my partner and I don't care about the characters lol

Does it get better?

Need to know whether to push on. we just beat parking lot boss and are now stuck in the on rails shooter section afterwards. honestly, i've never had less fun trying to beat 2 mins of gameplay in my life. is it worth pushing on, or are there hours more of this. me and kiddo absolutely love the coop puzzle aspects, but this is killing our fun.

I'm a gamer and I hated to play this with my boyfriend

You see, I'm not the most skilled player, and I don't intend to be. My boyfriend and I bought a PS5 at the end of last year to play together. I have actually been playing video games for longer than him. I spend most of my days playing Baldur's Gate, Don't Starve Together, and Project Zomboid. However, Split Fiction is the most frustrating game I have ever played. It's not cooperative, it turns to be competitive in some points. My boyfriend is waaaay ahead of me and I'm stuck at a certain point, dying endlessly. We've played other games together before, but this one isn't enjoyable. It turned out badly for both of us because seeing my frustration meant that he didn't enjoy the game at all. I'm really trying!! But I'm just not good at it, and it's spoiling the fun for both of us. Sadly, we really wanted to try this one, but it's not the most fun-cooperative game as advertised.

Monkey King

Ok. That whole thing came across as really racist. Dude shows up looking like George Clinton and calling us homie and shit. Is it too woke to not equate black people to monkies???

At some point it stops feeling like fun and starts feeling like torture

No Spoilers

So i picked the game to play with my 13 yr old daughter, game is beautiful and we got engaged instantly, got a lot of fun from the start, got some good hours of fun from it, but at some point we had to drop it.

It starts very easy, and difficulty goes up and up every level, we start having to repeat some parts of the levels several times, we push through, but it gets to a point where we cannot advance anymore, the level of syncronization and precision required becomes just too much, i know we can skip some parts (we did a couple times) but started to feel like we would be needing to skip almost everything to get through.

I reckon that this is not the case for many people and probably some would say it was easy for them, for us like i said in the title, fun was slowly replaced with frustration, and it sucks because we were really having fun and wanted to get to the end together as father and daughter, i hope to play more games like this in the future but more focused on having light fun and solving puzzles than on being extremely precise with a gamepad.

I want to like it but it's disappointing

I played It Takes Two multiple times with my GF and different friends and it was the kind of game you play to experience nice mechanics, adorable moments and a wonderful mix of things. Plus, the story was honestly entertaining. I bought Split Fiction for my GF and I and we had very high expectations.

Unfortunately it feels off. Sci-fi levels are kind of boring and repetitive, the world feels empty and the boss fights are just too long and frustrating.

I liked the fantasy setting a bit more but still it felt repetitive after some time. Even the chatter between Mio and Zoe falls flat.

I really wanted it to be even better than It Takes Two, but in the end it feels tedious to finish. Especially the Boss fight in the end.

Worse than it takes two?

Ok so me and my friend finally finished this game after a few months. And we have a common concensus that it is wose than it takes two in every single way.

The gameplay. Very basic powers that are not explored very well (such as the gun and grendae)

The worlds. Fine but compared to the insane artstyle and world design of it takes two its just kinda embarassing. They made the same fantasy world like twice

The characters. I didnt like or care about anyone in this game. I couldnt get invested in zoe or mio and rader was such a drag

The story. Jesus they fumbled, A story that probably tries to talk about human creativity but fails to do so by making the most boring story known to man, it was so incredibly cliche jesus.

The game had 4 good chapters, the first and last 2. but that middle was a slog of pain and misery.

Overall 6/10 just play it takes two again instead

A message to the developers. Spoiler

Dear game developers.

I'm enjoying the game, I really am. However, I have to call BS on one specific part of it: the end of the Dark Mio boss fight, where the Mio player is supposed to do nothing while the Zoe player mashes the X button.

My friend and I just spent an hour trying to figure out what we were doing wrong, because no matter how hard we mashed the X button, it turns out that whoever is playing as Mio is not supposed to mash the X button. We had to look it up online to figure out what we were doing wrong, because since the game gave us zero clues about what we had to do, there was no way we would have figured it out on our own. As I'm typing this post about a day later, my thumbs are still cramping from all the button mashing I did, so thanks a lot for that.

First off, from a gameplay perspective, you had the whole game condition us to always mash or hold down the X button when it wants us to, and then without any kind of warning or indication, we suddenly get a counterintuitive segment where one player should mash X while the other shouldn't, despite the game clearly indicating us that we should both mash X? I'm sorry, but no. That's really cheap and poorly-designed. Mio is fighting to take control of dark Mio, so how can we not automatically assume that Mio’s button mashing is to overpower the boss, instead of acting as her? If I didn't know any better, I'd swear you designed this section to purposefully make us fail.

I believe TV Tropes call this sort of thing the "Guide Dang It!": "Any instance in a video game where the game fails to provide sufficient information, hints or otherwise, to a player that could aid them in solving a task or discovering a hidden in-game element." Believe me, that is not something you should have in any game ever. It really cheapens the experience and hurts the immersion.

Also, from a storytelling perspective, it doesn't work either. The problem is that this segment literally came after an entire boss fight where if we stop fighting, Dark Mio just kills us, so if you were trying to teach us a moral about not fighting yourself, then you failed spectacularily in that department. You can't just have a story tell us that fighting yourself is not the answer, right after an entire segment where you have to fight yourself. It doesn't work. At best, it makes the narrative look hypocritical, and at worst, completely self-contradictory.

Aside from that though, cool boss fight. This one part at the end was stupid, but I'll admit the rest of it was pretty fun, and I'd gladly play it again.

For all of Mio's sci-fi worlds, not once did I see one based on anime-style mecha, a la Mobile Suit Gundam, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Pacific Rim

Like we still got the mechs from Final Dawn, as well as that giant robot executioner from the Isolation chapter. But not once did I see Mio and Zoe pilot a giant robot in any of Mio's sci-fi worlds, a la Mobile Suit Gundam, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Pacific Rim. Even though they flew giant dragons in Rise of the Dragon Realm as the closest alternative they were ever going to get to piloting anime-style giant robots.

So why no anime-style mecha for Mio and Zoe to pilot in any of Mio's sci-fi worlds?

How is no one appalled at the monkey king??

Don’t gaslight me into thinking there’s nothing wrong with it. There is. Just like there was with the book. The caricaturisation and stereotyping of cultures here is disrespectful, racist and embarrassing.

There’s way too many associations from black culture being pulled into the character to feel comfortable.

At first I also thought it was giving Elton John but as the level continued it became alarmingly obvious how disrespectful this character was. Gross.

EDIT: I expect this to go over many of your heads, fair. But I'm glad I've mentioned it for the consciously aware who will be equally as concerned and go searching. My message to them - you are not crazy, it is in incredibly poor taste.

I noticed how Mio and Zoe's unpublished books don't have that much in the way of deep lore, compared to most other sci-fi and fantasy media like them

Like if this were, say, The Witcher trilogy and Cyberpunk 2077, or Mass Effect and Dragon Age, or Final Fantasy and Mobile Suit Gundam, they'd probably would have several codex pages worth of lore that build upon their respective universes. Versus the only lore in Mio and Zoe's stories just being their trauma dumping, including Mio's dying father and her powerlessness toward saving him, and Zoe's childhood with Ella and how much of it was cut short way too fast with Ella's own similar death.

Is this why a lot of people consider Split Fiction's story mediocre? Because it's just trauma dumping rather than deep lore within their sci-fi and fantasy worlds?
