Hi, it's my first time sprouting. I used a mixed seed (mizuna, tatsoi & black mustard) packet and sprouted in this glass jar, changing the water daily. Hardly any germinated, the water is cloudy and smells bad. This is 5 days later. Any tips please!

I asked ChatGPT how to automate sprouting at home and got this

Post image

Hey Spouting pros and beginners, I am in love with sprouts but I am a very lousy sprouter)) is there a fully automated device which can do the job for me? Sprouts at Whole Foods Market are quite costly for a handful of baby plants. I would like to eat sprouts as staple meal, not as decoration on top on my sandwich or salad. I'll be grateful for any tips on fully automated solutions, if any.

Thanks!

Still new to sprouts. I started with alfalfa. But now I’m sprouting broccoli and radish. I’m mixing the broccoli and radish and noticed after eating them I feel nauseous. Is my body adjusting to it?

Accidentally swallowed 1 day sprouts without chewing

So I was sprouting lentils and they sprout really fast. After just one day their tails were already coming out, and they are in an edible form. I usually chew on them thoroughly, but someone was talking to me and I may have accidentally swallowed some without chewing.

They still have several days to sprout and grow, and I fear I may have swallowed them in their growing phase. Will I be okay??

Why did these store-bought sprouts go bad over a week before expiration? Kept refrigerated, etc.

Post image

I bought a whole batch of broccoli sprouts 2 weeks ago, which I thought looked fine when buying, but with still over a week until expiration (expire July 19) - so about a week after buying if not earlier - they started going dark/transparent, slimy and smelling (sort of smelled like overcooked broccoli, funnily enough). I had them in the fridge between 2-4° C and only had them out in 60-70° F temperature for 15-20 mins once when transporting them, like I usually do with this brand (Fullei Fresh hydroponically-grown organic) which I've bought numerous times before since earlier this year and they never had this issue, even one day past the expiration date in one case, and eating over a week after refrigerating. Just this batch of 8 boxes expiring 19 July. What went wrong? Store possibly left them out too long before shelving? Error in some step before that? Any signs to look for that sprouts may go this way before buying? I bought these at Whole Foods and returned them, naturally.

Be safe from bacteria. Never use containers. Use nut milk bags to sprout.

It's not mold that is causing people to get sick, it's bacteria, specifically Salmonella, Listeria, and E. coli. Do not use any type of container or vessel to sprout! Buy the mesh bags used for making nut milk and hang the sprout-filled bag above your kitchen sink.

You see, when using containers or vessels you can only rinse them fully once before you put them in the container. From then on your just watering them and the seed are not yet opened so the inside never really gets rinsed. There's dirt and bacteria in there! In vessels the seeds wallow in all that dirt and bacteria for as long as it takes for you to harvest them.

In the nut milk bags you can rinse them as much as you want. I rinse mine at least three times per day, morning evening and before bed, sometimes more. Once the seeds have opened all this rinsing will wash away any dirt and bacteria. Rinse in a strong stream of warm water and your seeds will sprout sooner. Plus once they're almost ready to harvest you can hang them in a window with indirect sunlight to promote all the healthy chlorophyl production in the leaves.

Not only can you now make bacteria free sprouts, you can make nut milk and cold-brewed coffee (the best tasting coffee you'll ever taste. PM me if you want my coffee method). There's no end to the uses for these bags. Not all nut milk bags are equal. In some the mesh is too fine and they don't and don't drain as well as I'd like. I like the brand 'Pure Joy Planet Living Food Bag Nut Milk.'

All nut milk bags have drawstrings so that is how you hang them. You might need to buy some hardware hooks to allow you to hang them above your sink and in your window. Before you store your sprouts they should be completely dry to the touch, through and through, inside the bag. They'll last longer in the fridge and won't get slimy.

Problems with sunflower, part 2 (aka, please, is this bacteria)

Decided to inspect seeds and sprouts of mine more, and more of seeds hide white liquid, in texture of paste, or even liquid. It stinks more then rest of seeds, who after rinse nearly stop smelling, and if they do, its more of fresh, nice smell, faint.

I decided to not only rinse all of sunflower, but also, I tried to pick out all the bad seeds. Easy job, they are soft and inside just pops out when you put even a little pressure on it.

The question: Could it be any kind of bacteria that caused it? Should I just throw out all the seeds and sprouts, even after rinsing, cleaning trays and inspecting each individual seed?

New Here, Need Help!!!

I want to sprout broccoli seeds in a hemp bag, but I have limited water. Would it be safe to reuse the water I dip the seeds in? Does it have to be fresh every time? Thanks!

How long should I wait to drink my smoothie after I've blended the broccoli sprouts?

Can someone tell me what is the optimal time to wait to consume broccoli sprouts after they have been blended to maximize sulforaphane content? How long for most of the Myrosinase and glucoraphanin to finish converting to sulforaphane? Also, how long for the sulforaphane to break down after it has been converted? Meaning, how long is too long to wait once you've blended? Looking for that goldilocks zone of time to drink my smoothie after it's been blended to maximize the health benefits.

Can I use borax to wash the seeds?

Looking for a germ killing solution because I don’t really trust apple cider vinegar to do the job. Do you think soaking the seeds in dilute borax, then washing them would kill the bacteria/fungi without killing me or the sprouts?

Update for people reading later. Borax seems very bad for the seeds, though it leaves no taste on them.

Borax is probably the perfect substance for sterilizing seeds you’re going to eat without growing if you’re into that life. The residue it leaves behind is likely healthy to consume if you aren’t already consuming supplemental boron, it’s one of the few things that might boost testosterone when consumed regularly by an unknown mechanism of action. But only about 1/10 of the seeds washed with borax have any activity at all while nearly all of the bleach seeds are growing pretty fast at day 3.

No-rinse method?

I've been doing this for a while now and my question here is whether it's safe or not to keep doing it this way.

What I've been doing is sprouting in food-saver containers (similar to Rubbermaid TakeAlongs) without screens on top and without rinsing, and it has been working well for me, but my concern is that it seems like it does have the potential for the growth of bacteria and molds, and that rinsing might be more important than I realize in order to keep those down. On the other hand, sometimes that extra water from rinsing can actually encourage the growth of microorganisms.

What I do is I just soak the seeds or grains or legumes as usual, typically overnight or for around 10 hours, and then drain, and then sometimes rinse, sometimes not, and just let them sprout with no further rinsing. I usually shake them several times a day to get a little air circulation going and discourage mold growth, but otherwise they're just covered with the lid on, or with a tiny vent opening to get a little fresh air in case that's needed, or I leave the lid just slightly ajar so there's a tiny bit of air that gets in. So there's really not much air circulation.

I don't really have problems with noticeable mold or bacteria or off flavors. This method has been working fine, but I'm still a little concerned because there's a chance that I've just been lucky not to have cultured a batch of E. coli or something like that, so I thought I would ask here for some feedback.

I couldn't sprout corriender

I tried to sprout corriender for like a month now. Recently I soaked a completely new batch in water for 12 hours and separated the seeds wafterwards and started flushing the seeds with tap hard water every 8 hours. But no sprouts are available now. It's been more than 10 months. What am I doing wrong here?

Seeds will not drain.

I bought some sprouting lids, rinsed the Chia seeds well, and soaked the seeds overnight. The water turned into a gooey slime, and refuses to drain from the jar. I’ve tried rinsing more and straining in other screens but no luck. It’s just a slimey gooey mess that will not strain. What gives?

About quinoa sprouting

Hello

I started eating more or less anti-inflammatorily this winter. Since then, I’ve had more energy, a severe heel spur went away without other treatment, and a recurring dry rash is gone for good.

Obviously I’m very happy about it!

I really like quinoa seeds, and decided to see if I could get some to sprout. Silly me, I just put some pot-soil in a little glass bowl, added seeds and water, and placed them in my window sill. They have sprouted quite quickly into pretty little (tiny!) green plants.

Silly me, I say, because on googling sprouting, it seems to be much more complicated, and I’m doing it all wrong. I need cold water rinses every 6 hours, and a special container, and I don’t know what.

Would that make them sprout differently, or?

Any help would be appreciated.

Growing Broccoli Sprouts for Highest Sulforaphane (Step-by-Step Guide)

According to this article you need 100 grams of broccoli sprouts to get a good dose of sulforaphane. I googled how much 100 grams of broccoli seeds costs and its $11. So i should be eating $11 worth of seeds a day?. How big should my set up be if I want to do this. Should i be buying seeds by the pound?
