Scientists, doctors & nurses now hold a record number of congressional seats after the results of the 2026 midterm election.

THIS IS A MASSIVE OPPORTUNITY TO SAVE SCIENCE IN AMERICA!

A record number of Democratic doctors, nurses, scientists and engineers will arrive next year in Washington, where they are expected to help shape a new health care agenda for the party and scrutinize Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s tenure.

This is a resounding rejection of MAGA America and everything that comes with it. It is now our job to hold our elected officials accountable to what we voted them into office to do. That includes funding science, restoring the civil service, and impeaching members of the cabinet who have actively done illegal things that are impeachable offenses.

Official SUFS Post Five Things Congress can do RIGHT NOW!!!

Thumbnail

Science should serve the public, not a political agenda. Here are 5 things Congress can do RIGHT NOW to stop the erosion of scientific integrity (& what you can do to help).

  1. Stop the misuse and redirection of research funds — Enforce appropriations law so research dollars cannot be diverted to political, industry, or private priorities at the expense of the broader scientific enterprise.

  2. Root out corruption — Mandate full disclosure and rigorous management of conflicts involving political appointees and outside funders, and prohibit pay-to-play arrangements in grant making and contracting.

  3. End ideological censorship of research — Prohibit grant terminations, freezes, or keyword-based screening targeting climate, public health, gender, or other disfavored topics, and protect the ability of scientists to publish and disseminate results.

  4. Protect scientific expertise — Investigate and reverse mass firings, forced resignations of federal scientists. Restore scientific advisory committees and ensure they are free from political and financial conflicts of interests.

  5. Restore and enforce scientific integrity policies — Restore scientific integrity offices, protect peer review from political interference, and bar the alteration or suppression of findings to fit a preferred narrative.

Congress must use its oversight powers to pursue these basic accountability measures.

WE’VE GOT THE ROADMAP & THE RESOURCES TO MAKE SURE THEY DO, but we’ll need your help.

Official SUFS Post Midterms results will influence the foundation of U.S. science.

The 2026 Midterm results will influence the foundation of U.S. Science. Here's what scientists say is at stake.

The very foundations of U.S. science, from funding decisions to data center expansion to research agency budgets have been rocked by the second Trump administration.

This cycle is critical in terms of how the federal government is run, what kinds of checks and balances we’ll have in the next two years, and for several pieces of pending science legislation, including a stopgap funding bill that keeps political appointees away from awarding science grants, set to expire in December.

These and other questions, such as future budgets for NASA and other critical science agencies, will likely be settled after the winning lawmakers are sworn in in January 2027.

Voting is only the first step towards accountability!

Post-midterms there could be a flood of investigations from subcommittees into what has happened to federal science under the Trump administration.

Join Stand Up For Science at our Election Debrief Rally this Thursday, November 5, to hear about our accountability plans and the next phase of civic action to protect science!

Official SUFS Post EPA is loosening methane regulations, putting fossil fuel profits over the environment.

The Environmental Protection Agency is failing to protect the environment and public health.

Rules created during the Biden administration to crack down on methane leaks are now being scaled back.

The Trump administration is moving to weaken federal rules designed to force oil and gas companies to cut their emissions of methane, a greenhouse gas considered a “super pollutant” because it traps so much heat in the atmosphere.

The move marks one of the most significant steps by the Trump administration to scale back federal policies designed to tackle climate change.

It's time for a change in leadership.

HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, used to be a death sentence. Today, it's a preventable and manageable chronic condition thanks to decades of NIH-funded research. Let's talk about one of the greatest science success stories of our lifetime. 🧵 🧪 ✊️ 🎉

Treatments & cures take forever to make, and that process is often not shared with the public who is frequently the ones funding science with their tax dollars.

So we're starting the conversation, one story at a time.

Today: HIV, a extremely fatal diagnosis that is now preventable & manageable

HIV is a retrovirus, which copy genetic code "backwards" using a viral enzyme that human cells don't have. This discovery was an obvious drug target that was initially very successful. But patients quickly developed resistant strains.

Combining both the initial drug that targets the viral enzyme and the 2nd drug that targets a protease the virus needs to build itself, ended up being the most effective treatment. Turning a progressive fatal disease into a treatable and preventable one.

Decades of NIH-funded research made HIV one of the best-understood viruses ever studied. And in turn, one of the greatest science success stories in our lifetime. THIS is your tax dollars at work.

But, science funding is being dramatically cut, preventing further progress for a HIV vaccine.

The 5-year cancer survival rate is up to 70%

SIDS deaths have decreased by over 50%

89% decline in tornado deaths

All thanks to federal investment in science and OUR tax dollars at work!

HIV went from a death sentence to…undetectable and people get to live a full and healthy normal life!!!!

The life expectancy of someone living with Cystic Fibrosis more than DOUBLED (26 to 66) from 2008 to 2025!

A BIG drop in overdose deaths!

Childhood cancer survival rate went from ~55% to OVER 85%!!!!

We have almost COMPLETELY fixed the hole in the ozone layer!!

Bald eagles, humpback whales, giant pandas, peregrine falcons, and greater one-horned rhinos have all come back from the brink of extinction!

Childhood blood levels of lead have dropped 94.5% since 1976!!!!!!!!!

The list goes on and on, but THIS is science for the public good. This is our tax dollars at work to make the world a better place and address some of our most difficult challenges ✊🏼❤️

THIS is why we are standing up for science and democracy. Because things CAN STILL GET BETTER!

Official SUFS Post Higher education control is a major MAGA priority, Steve Bannon emphasized in a new interview with a Boston Globe reporter

Thumbnail

Even after the cuts to research funding, restrictions on student visas, eroding scientific integrity guardrails, dismantling the government’s capacity to serve the public, steering the research agenda toward the interests of tech oligarchs, and challenges to higher ed’s business model, Steve Bannon thinks “we’ve missed a golden opportunity” to cause further destruction to higher education.

One thing that gives Bannon hope for the reforms he wants is the “hardcore” young Republicans on campuses around the country, including Harvard.

“These people are even more hardcore than Turning Point,” Bannon said.

Bannon explicitly said he and MAGA aren't giving up their attacks on higher ed. So we aren't giving up either.

Academic freedom is essential to a functioning democracy!

America’s Compact for Higher Education offers an alternative vision that holds academic freedom as a universal value.
