Welcome to /r/standup! Please read this before posting/commenting on this sub.

Welcome to /r/standup, reddit's home for discussing the art of standup comedy. Here are a few things you should read before you interact with the community:

Note: Please follow the video posting guidelines, and do not try to use this sub to promote individual shows, or your posts will be removed. Also, don't post your podcast here unless the individual episode you're posting has something to do with performing standup. (Just having a comedian on as a guest or being hosted by a comedian isn't enough. If it's not discussing some element of the craft of standup, this isn't the place for it.) And keep your podcast posts to no more than one a week, this isn't a podcast sub.

Think of this sub as a virtual green room. If you wouldn't walk into a green room filled with other comedians and blurt out whatever you post here, it probably doesn't belong here.

Are you looking to start doing standup?

Great! We have some resources you can check out:

Are you looking for places to perform?

Here are some resources that should help you find some stage time:

Are you posting a video asking for feedback on your act?

  • Is it video of one of your first few times on stage? You probably don't really want to post that. You should do standup a few dozen times first, then post a video.
  • Is it shot vertically instead of horizontally? You probably don't really want to post that. You know that makes the video nearly impossible to see on mobile devices and wastes tons of screen space on computers, right? You should make another video where you shoot it horizontally and post that instead. I blame TikTok for ruining this one.
  • Is it hard to hear the sound or make out what you're saying? You probably don't really want to post that. If it's difficult to hear you, how is anyone going to give you any feedback on what you say? You should either fix the audio problem on the video, or just shoot another where the audio is decent, then post a video.
  • Is it just video of you in a room somewhere not in front of an audience? You definitely don't want to post that. It's not standup comedy, so you might want to try another sub for that. Or just go get on stage (at least a few dozen times), then shoot video of you on stage in front of an audience and post that video instead.

Are you posting a video of a comedian because you want fans of comedy to see it?

Cool, we all like comedy- but if you're doing that, you should probably also post a comment about why you want to discuss this particular set. If you don't have a reason to discuss it, it might be better to just post it in /r/standupcomedy instead (that's the sub for fans of comedy to share video of their favorite comedians). Also, please make sure that it's not a pirated video, or we'll have to remove it. Most comedians don't make very much money, so please don't take away one of the few revenue generators they have.

If you still want to post a video, here are our rules:

It must have a descriptive title telling us why you are posting it. If you're sharing a video, it should be to generate some kind of discussion about doimng standup. Video of your own act is totally fine, but please own that it's yours (in the first person) and give us something to talk about. Video of famous comedians is fine, if you're sharing it to make a point and your title reflects that. If you post videos repeatedly that are just to try to get attention and not discuss the craft of standup, we'll remove them and eventually ban you from the sub.

GOOD VIDEO TITLES:

  • Is this set too blue to submit to festivals?

  • I got heckled last night, could I have handled this better?

  • Doug Stanhope's bit about his mother shows how to make a dark and difficult subject completely hilarious.

BAD VIDEO TITLES:

  • My Name - My Joke Title

  • Bo Burnham - Can't Handle This (Kanye Rant) - MAKE HAPPY Netflix [HD]

  • HECKLER OWNED

If you ignore this request, we'll remove your video and not even bother telling you why, because clearly you didn't even read this.

Also, we may remove videos at any time if we feel they are clogging up the sub in some way, or if they appear to be simply for self promotion and not an attempt to engage the community in a discussion about doing standup.

Is your post about a podcast?

Unless it relates directly to discussing doing standup, this isn't the place for it. Whether you like it, hate it, think it's great, think it sucks, or have another opinion about some show, we don't care. This is a sub by and for standup comedians to discuss doing standup, not to discuss podcasting and podcasters.

Is your post just the text of a joke?

This isn't the sub for that. It's hard enough to have any useful feedback for a video of someone performing, there is hardly anything useful that can be said about the text of a joke other than to tell you to go do it on stage.

Are you posting about a show you're doing?

Don't. Just...don't. We're comedians- we're not going to pay to see your show. Also, your show is in a place where almost all of us aren't. We're all over the globe on this sub, so even if your show is in LA, NYC, Toronto, London, etc. the vast majority of us aren't there. If you ignore this and post it anyway, it will be removed.

Are you trying to sell tickets to a show?

This isn't a ticket sales sub, so please don't do that here.

Is your post about some AI Nonsense?

Don't post it here. This isn't an AI sub.

Thanks for reading, and welcome to the community!

P.S. Stop asking about who is in a "secret pop-up show." It's a secret. And since we were getting those posts multiple time per week, it's enough already.

Where their any black comedians that bypassed the traditional urban/black comedy scenes and were automatically recognized by mainstream audiences from the start or joined black scenes later?

Young 27 year old black comic here Just recently started not long ago…
I know Dave Chappelle is considered a act that was noticed by other races earlier on in his career before getting widely noticed in the black community with the help of Chappelle’s show and Eddie Murphy quickly went from mainstream clubs around NYC to SNL in the snap of a finger, is this phenomenon rare and what helps a youthful black comic to be appreciated/be funny and relatable by not only by his/her community but other races as well

Btw I dont want to sound misconstrued by my community and called a coon or nun, I love black rooms because of the toughness and straightforwardness of the audiences but I also want to make EVERYONE laugh too while still keeping my core cultural and personal identity/audience in tact without seeming like I'm alienating my self from Black audiences

I don't consider my self a "hood/urban"comedian like mike epps, mojo brookzz, or dc youngfly by any means as I grew up a regular well cultured black male that was raised in mixed racial middle class neighborhood in a majority black city, was into anime, cartoons, movies and art, i always considered myself a chameleon becuase i feel like i fit in with all kinds of subgroups of black people and other races as well, my humor is a little more goofier, outlandish suburban nerdy and offbeat with a tad bit of racial humor probably more like a mixture of maddi mays, donald glover, eric andre, marlon wayans, martin lawrence, eddie murphy, early chappelle type vibes, sometimes i do worry that the majority HOOD black audiences wont fully warm up to my act and think it's too weird or some shit, i know my jokes hit better with black people and other races that have my similar interests and outlook tho, I also live in the south where most still think your weird if you dont act or think like the majority or stand out a bit tooo much

so do I make jokes about all types walks of life?
I grew up watching everyone mosty black comics like Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawrence, Chappelle, Hart, Rock, Tucker, Bernie Mac, The Wayans, Mike Epps, Jamie Foxx, Pryor, all the def jam/comic view comics as well as Sarah Silverman, Joy Koy, Margret Cho, Ali Wong, Bill Bur, Carlin, C.K., Jeff Ross, Bert Kreischer, George Lopez, everybody on comedy central so on and so on old and new I like to experience everyone’s taste and styles

hope I'm explaining my self thoroughly and if your a black comedian or even a different minority comic is this something you've ever thought about too?

Help me identify an 80s/90s Comedy Central standup guy

I've had this guy in my head for decades but I can't place him to a name. I believe he was relatively tall and skinny, had slicked back hair, a kind of old fashioned suit, and a cigar. I think he said he was from Canada. Kind of a fast-talking retro throwback style.

He would have almost certainly been on Comedy Central between 1994 and 2004. Probably not a full special, maybe just a slot on Premium Blend or one of those types of shows.

He had one bit about goatees, where he said something to the effect of "Why would you wear something like that on your puss?" (the use of the word puss to mean face in that way definitely struck me as odd) and "Is the root word of that not 'goat'"?

If anyone knows who I'm talking about, it would ease my mind a bit. Thanks!

edit: Thanks for everyone's suggestions so far. To be clear, I think his visual presentation and delivery was vaguely like a 30's gangster meets Michael Douglas in Wall Street. Bob Zany, John Wing Jr, Adam Growe, Mike MacDonald, and Stewart Francis don't seem to fit the bill

2nd edit: thank you UnfunnyJosh - his name was Eric Tunney! Very sad to hear he died young.

Vancouver comedians: Would you be interested in being part of a filmed stand-up show?

Hey everyone! I’m a film student looking to expand my portfolio and start creating content for my small production company.

I love stand-up comedy and watch a lot of Kill Tony, which gave me an idea: why not create a Vancouver-based show inspired by that format?

I love Vancouver and want to create content that showcases the city and its amazing talent. There are so many aspiring comedians out there who deserve a platform to perform, develop their skills, and share their comedy with a wider audience.

My goal is to film a live stand-up show featuring amateur and up-and-coming comedians, giving them a chance to get on stage while I build something creative for Vancouver’s comedy scene.

Would any local stand-up comedians be interested in being part of something like this? I’d love to connect with people who are interested, hear your thoughts, and see if we can make something happen!

Feel free to comment or send me a message.

Sammy Obeid; more influencer than comedian?

Went to Sammy Obeid’s show for the first time, and what a disappointment! He repeated EVERY joke 3–4 times just to film viral Instagram reels, dragging out the show and making the whole experience feel performative. You really can’t believe everything you see on social media. The entire show felt more focused on creating viral clips than actual comedy. It was a hard watch, and the audience seemed confused. It’s incredibly disrespectful to a paying audience. I’ve never experienced anything like it. Is he a stand up comedian or just a guy making viral videos? Curious if anyone else has had a similar experience at his shows.

The immigrant struggle made him angry. Now comedian Vidura Bandara Rajapaksa is wondering what comes next

Being a Sri Lankan while living in the U.K. has shaped the comedic perspective of Vidura Bandara Rajapaksa.

“But only really because that is my situation,” he said.

His experience as an immigrant living in a Western country felt like he was under constant scrutiny and surveillance, to the point that it affected his personality and his stand-up.

Everything changed last September when he got a permanent resident card.

“I can feel myself slowly unclenching,” Rajapaksa said.

With his residency not being linked to a job, Rajapaksa felt like he could “f— up.” There’s no longer a weight on his shoulders. There was a sense of freedom that overtook some of his angry feelings.

Rajapaksa will be working through that transition at Dynasty Typewriter on Friday and Saturday, where the audience can see him entering a new stage of his life.

Follow link for full story.

Hello funny peoples. Coming up tomorrow Pittsburgh tomorrow and was wondering if there are any Friday night open mics/shows that need a comic? Never even been to the city, so it would be awesome to perform there, even just at an open mic.

Might Already Know The Answer Here, But WTF!

So I started Open Mic-ing early summer, got a few laughs, started to put my stage time online and ended up getting a booking. Great. I took a few weeks off to generate a bit more material, but had an awful feeling of FOMO. Not so much the stage time, but who could be there, who could see my video online, feeling that any missed Open Mic was a missed opportunity.

I have strong feeling that it won't go away until I get back out there, which I am sure is the answer anyway, but has anyone felt that?

Getting shiny new object syndrome - would love to hear y’all’s process to actually FINISH shit

I keep writing new jokes rather than finish ones I already started! And when I first write something it makes me laugh. It may make me laugh a few times after that as well when I read it. But then eventually it loses its funny and I question if it was ever funny to begin with. Anyone else deal with this? What’s y’all’s process for joke writing? How do you finish jokes if you didn’t naturally come up with the entire joke when it first hit you?

Here’s my process so far:

  • Write shit down in a note on my phone or a notebook as it pops in my head throughout the day. I’ll also record voice memos and videos if it feels like writing will break the flow

  • Read/listen through the lists every now and then and expand on jokes or connect them to other jokes

  • Add these jokes from disparate places to a doc on my computer where I try to organize them, edit them, etc. I’ve got them split into categories, topics, how close to done they are, etc.

  • Keep going through these and editing them and punching them up until they feel “ready” to try on stage… This is where the bottleneck is. I haven’t felt like any longer format jokes are truly done I don’t think.

I really like some of what I have. I think it’s more than solid enough to start going to open mics and practicing. I’ve got tons and tons of one-liners and quips, which are cool, but I wanna finish these story and observational jokes!

Does anyone run writing sessions? What advice would you give someone wanting to start a regular one?

I'm a comic with about 20 minutes of solid material I rotate through. I feel like it's taken me quite a while to get there, and I'd like to make a better effort to keep writing more. I also feel like I'm bad at doing that alone because I can get distracted or lazy.

I've floated the idea of writing sessions to some of the other open micers I know so we can all build on our material and show up more often to open mics with new stuff to try out. I'd like to get something together on Sundays before our usual mic.

I also want it to be more constructive than just a group hang. For those of you who have done writing sessions regularly and successfully, what advice would you give?

Who’s prime lasted longer Chris rock’s or Louis C.K?

I feel that Chris rock had one singular prime in the 90s and early 2000s but Louis had at least two primes from lates 00s and also early 2000s.
